'Rise' - A Sci-fi Short Film presented by DUST

Subscribe and watch more sci-fi shorts on DUST: http://bit.ly/2aqc5vh ‘Rise’ – by David Karlak It’s us or them. This is the dark conclusion that humans have reached in David Karlak’s short film “Rise.”  In the near future, robots have developed advanced emotional sophistication and their human creators don’t like it.  What should have been a simple and violent extermination of artificial life proves harder when a captured robot demonstrates that the human aggressors are biting off more than they can chew. Our team loves the short for its impressive visual effects and character driven story.  The late Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin delivers an especially strong performance that gets viewers to sympathize with the plight of a creation that is no longer wanted by its creator. 'The Candidate' - A Sci-fi Short Film presented by DUST

Subscribe and watch more sci-fi shorts on DUST: http://bit.ly/2aqc5vh ‘The Candidate’ – by David Karlak David Karlak’s “The Candidate” explores what happens when the dark thoughts in the back of our minds are given a voice and worse — power. The story follows a secret society whose purpose is to find people who don’t deserve to live and to kill them with their thoughts. The tension between the pessimistic protagonist and the liaison of the secret society comes to a head in a riveting twist. The Candidate’s dark narrative is a dead ringer for “American Psycho” and would makes its predecessor proud. 20 minutes is longer than most short films run for but our team promises that after the short’s thrilling opening scene, you won’t be able to stop watching. Leon relaxes, watching a hologram of blue skies and recalling a holiday he and Isobel had – but doesn’t remember one of the features she draws attention to, a vase with a white lily. The purpose of their expedition is to investigate a comet. Perhaps because of his fractiousness, Leon sets a flight path that Isobel considers dangerous, and the ship is damaged in the process of its exploration. Buoyed by the success of their trip, Leon and Isobel discuss what they’ll do when they return to Earth. Isobel gets a word wrong, and it becomes apparent there’s something is amiss – she is a holographic companion for Leon, based on the persona of a former lover, and is suffering from the same fault as the ship’s other systems. Isobel insists that Leon reboot her, but he is reluctant to do so since it will wipe her out. Their relationship is what’s keeping him together, and for Isobel it’s one that’s based on someone else’s memories. Isobel insists on the reboot, and Leon reminisces about the ‘real’ Isobel, for once addressing the hologram as if it’s her. These are their last moments together. Then the reboot is completed and the holographic companion that was Isobel asks Leon in a blank computerized voice what he wants to call her. Leon prepares for a very long and very lonely trip back to Earth. DUST: Binge-watchable Sci-fi DUST is the first multi-platform destination for binge watchable sci-fi. Automata follows former NYPD detective turned private eye Sam Regal and his incredibly smart automaton partner, Carl Swangee. Together, they work to solve the case and understand each other in this dystopian America. Putting a science fiction twist on the classic hard-boiled detective drama, Automata explores a dystopian alternative version of Prohibition-era New York City, similarly shaped by moral panic even though the alcohol flows freely here. In this universe, Prohibition doesn't ban drinking, but the further production of sapient androids that have become prevalent by the 1920s. As a result, the existing androids, called automatons, are shunned by society, relegated to an untouchable caste of servants despite their near-human thought capability, and are frequently subjected to hatred and violence. It's in this oppressive setting that human private detective Sam Regal (Basil Harris, "Grimm") and his automaton partner Carl Swangee (Doug Jones, The Shape of Water) work together to solve cases for both communities, learning to see humanity in one another while trying to prove that justice is still worth serving. 'Telescope' - A Sci-fi Short Film presented by DUST

Subscribe and watch more sci-fi shorts on DUST: http://bit.ly/2aqc5vh ‘Telescope’ - by Collin Davis (presented in 4k) Earth as we know and love it may become a thing of the past.   That’s the starting premise of Collin Davis’s “Telescope.”  This thoughtfully crafted short film follows a brave cosmic archaeologist as he travels back in time to capture photos of the once vibrant planet.  As he travels further back in time, we learn that the galaxy and time he came from has a lifeless Earth with no organic life left on its surface.  It’s hard to finish the film without feeling nostalgia for an Earth that is being taken for granted.   Dust loves this short film for its obvious environmental overtures but especially for its longing for a home that was but no longer is.  A fun fact is that this film’s lead VFX artist is none other than Wes Ball, the acclaimed director of Maze Runner and short film Ruin.   Collin Davis’s heartfelt film is worth watching more than once and taking to both head and heart. When a robot pop princess flees her keeper she runs straight into the arms of a lonely scarecrow desperate for adventure. They spend an incredible night together, caught in a heady vortex of music and magic. Perched on a hill overlooking a music festival, our lonely Scarecrow is being tortured by crows. As he takes in the distant festival, it pushes him to change his fate. Filled with renewed strength, Scarecrow manages to uproot himself and sets off to experience first-hand what he has listened to every summer for years. What he finds at the festival, however, is far beyond what he expected. Backstage, we meet a lonely Robot pop princess with a dying battery cell. Knowing this is her last night of existence before being powered down, she escapes into the audience after her performance, hoping to spend her last few hours living a real life. Robot and Scarecrow, two lost and lonely souls in the middle of the beautiful chaos, stumble upon each other. They spend one glorious night together, exploring everything the festival has to offer, whilst quickly falling in love. By the time the dawn comes around they have had the perfect twenty-four hour party experience. But what Scarecrow doesn’t realise is that his new love’s battery is dying and as the sun is coming up, her life is fading fast. Maybe nothing this good can last forever... right? Subscribe and watch more sci-fi shorts on DUST: http://bit.ly/2aqc5vh "Embers & Dust" by Patrick Biesemans For a curious young boy, The War of the Worlds is just the beginning. On the evening of October 30th, 1938 Orson Welles’ voice traveled far across the radio waves, bringing word of an invading alien army from Mars. The theatricality and delivery of the performance, along with recent memories of the Hindenburg disaster (one year prior), sent many listeners into a panic. Unfortunate coincidence would fall upon the town of Concrete WA where, at the height of the invading alien attack, a power transformer blew out sending the entire town and surrounding areas into darkness.
