The largest Russian naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea for 2013

10:57
The four major Russian Navy fleets will hold a joint exercise in late January in the Mediterranean and Black seas. It will be the biggest such event in decades. Commands for the Northern, Baltic, Black Sea and Pacific fleets have been preparing for the exercises since December of last year, the Russian Defense Ministry has announced. Warships detached for the event are currently sailing to those regions. "The primary goal of the exercise is to train issues regarding formation of a battle group consisting of troops of different branches outside of the Russian Federation, planning of its deployment and managing a coordinated action of a joint Navy group in accordance with a common plan," the ministry's information department explained. The exercise will include several scenarios, including the loading of amphibious troops from an unprepared coast in the Northern Caucasus onto transport vessels. The announcement comes days after the launch of the nuclear-powered submarine Vladimir Monomakh, the third Borei-class strategic submarine cruiser produced in Russia. The vessel, armed with Bulava ICBMs, will become part of the country's nuclear deterrence force after completing sea trials. The Russian Navy's five fleets each have their own headquarters. The strongest, the Northern fleet is based in Severomorsk in north-west of the country. The Baltic fleet is based in Kaliningrad, the western Russian enclave on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The Black Sea fleet is based in Sevastopol, Ukraine, from which Russia rents a naval base. The Pacific fleet is based in Vladivostok in Russia's Far East. The Caspian flotilla is the smallest in the Russian Navy, but is the strongest naval force in the enclosed Caspian Sea. Warships from the four main fleets conduct joint naval drills on regular basis to streamline command and control for operations. Groups of ships detached from different fleets also often sail for joint missions in the high seas.

Putin oversees snap Black Sea military exercise

01:07
http://www.euronews.com/ President Vladimir Putin has been watching Russian military manoeuvres in the Black Sea region just hours after he ordered the snap exercise. Officials in Moscow said the surprise move was to keep personnel on their toes and to test the capabilities of their hardware. It also sends a powerful military message to Russia's neighbours and the west. The Black Sea coast includes Georgia, Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. A military spokesman said 36 warships would take part along with an unspecified number of aircraft but he did not say how long the wargames would last. Russia's Black Sea fleet is based in the former Soviet port Sevastopol, a vital stepping off point for a war against Georgia in 2008. These exercises are in neighbouring Krasnodar. It is perhaps no coincidence that the Americans are also in the region, training with Georgian troops on an operation that became an annual event after that conflict. Around 350 US Marines have been helping troops prepare for deployment to Afghanistan where Georgia has had a contingent since 2004. It underlines Georgia's desire for closer ties with NATO. RT TV and UniBrowStudioVision Presents... USSR/Russia The Soviets had also studied OTH systems starting as early as the 1950s. Their first experimental model appears to be the Veyer (Hand Fan) that was built in 1949. The next serious Soviet project was Duga-2, built outside Nikolayev (on the Black Sea coast near Odessa). Aimed eastward, Duga-2 was first started on 7 November 1971, and was successfully used to track missile launches from the far east and Pacific Ocean to the testing ground on Novaya Zemlya. This was followed by their first operational system, known in the west as Steel Yard, which first broadcast in 1976. Built outside Gomel, near Chernobyl, it was aimed northward and covered the continental USA. Its loud and repetitive pulses in the middle of the shortwave radio bands led to it being known as the Russian Woodpecker by amateur radio (ham) operators. The Soviets eventually shifted the frequencies they used, without admitting they were even the source, largely due to its interference with certain long-range air-to-ground communications used by commercial airliners. A second system was set up in Siberia, also covering the continental USA, as well as Alaska. Duga-1 and Duga-2 (Russian: Дуга - "duga" means "arc") were Soviet experimental over-the-horizon radar (OTH) systems. They were developed for the Soviet ABM early-warning network. Both of these radar systems were aimed east and were fairly low power. They were predecessors of the Duga-3 or "Steel Yard" OTH system, which operated from 1976 to 1989. Duga-1 was the first experimental system.[1][2] It was built outside Mykolaiv in the Ukraine, and successfully detected rocket launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome, about 2,500 kilometers away. The second prototype, Duga-2, was built on the same site. Duga-2 was able to track launches from the Far East, and from submarines in the Pacific Ocean, as the missiles flew towards Novaya Zemlya in the Arctic Ocean.

Moscow shivers, but it's beach time on the Black Sea

01:06
http://www.euronews.com/ With a month of snow falling in just 24 hours spring still seems far away for Moscow residents. It is the heaviest March snowfall in 50 years which, even for a city used to winter extremes, is proving tiresome for residents. However for some, it is no big deal. Try living in Siberia, for example, said one man: "You haven't seen our winter! It is very snowy, with snowdrifts higher than a man. This snowfall isn't serious for us. We will definitely survive it." Back in his home region Krasnoyarsk had half a metre of snow. "We had lots of snow overnight. Snow-covered cars were stuck on the roadside," said one man brandishing a large shovel. But in Tomsk it was a positively balmy four degrees, bringing problems of its own, with flooding. Such is Russia's size there is a lot of weather about, and it changes constantly. Near the Black Sea it is 25 degrees, with everything bursting into blossom. BLACK SEA AFFAIR TRAILER

01:03
It starts with a high-stakes theft: weapons-grade plutonium is stolen from Russia. The Russian army is about to attack Chechnya to get it back. But U.S. intelligence discovers that the stolen shipment is actually on a rogue Russian freighter in the Black Sea. It turns into a global nightmare: a secret mission gone awry; an American submarine commander arrested and hauled before a military tribunal in Moscow; and a game of brinksmanship so dangerous that war might be its only possible conclusion. As the U.S. Navy searches for weapons-grade plutonium that has been smuggled out of Russia by terrorists, a submarine mishap escalates the international crisis. With the world watching, JAG Officer Zack Brewer is called to Moscow to defend submarine skipper Pete Miranda and his entire crew. It is a heart-stopping race against the clock. With Russian missiles activated and programmed for American cities, Brewer stalls for time as the U.S. Navy frantically searches the high seas for a floating hydrogen bomb that could threaten New York Harbor. Black Sea Fleet 230th Anniversary

00:36
The Black Sea Fleet is a large operational-strategic sub-unit of the Russian (and formerly Soviet) Navy, operating in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea since the late 18th century. Its ships are based in various harbors of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov while its aviation and infrastructure is based in various locations in Crimea, Ukraine and Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It is considered to have been founded by Prince Potemkin on May 13, 1783, together with its principal base, the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine. The major shipyard is located in Mykolaiv (today in Ukraine). Expanded to the south at the end of 18th century, Russia for long time struggled against its main rival in the region the Ottoman Empire. Therefore major opponent at the Black Sea was the Ottoman Navy. Black Sea Fleet defeated the Turks in 1790, fought the Ottomans during World War I, the Romanians during World War II, and Georgia during the 2008 South Ossetia war. Around The World goes to Sochi, Russia

07:32
Sochi, known as the Russian Riviera, is the popular black sea resort where the 2014 Olympics will be held. There will be two clusters for the games one on the coast and and one in the mountains. Sochi will also be the host for the 2014 Formula One Grand Prix. It is about 1000 miles south of Moscow and serviced by Siberian Airways. This domestic Russian airline flies between Moscow and Sochi Adler airport, and travel time is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. On both trips the ground staff collecting boarding passes said, as I entered the jetway, "Good Luck". Fortunately the flight was lucky and landed safely in this sub tropical city which shares a similar latitude with the French Cote d'Azur. With palm trees and waters warm enough to swim in through October, Sochi is at first glance not somewhere one would associate with winter Olympic competitions. From the airport to central Sochi can take 45 minutes depending on traffic. The Chebotarev Hotel is a four-star property and has 70 rooms, many with views of the city and the Black Sea. Furnishings are classically Russian with some wall tapestries and generous space for sofa and chairs. Interesting features includes motion sensors that turns lights on and off as one walks through the hallways. Depending on how fast or slow one strolls --- it can leave you in the dark. A light buffet breakfast is served in the hotel's restaurant, "Alexander". Along the boardwalk is the leading seafood restaurant, Blue Sea. It is tastefully decorated with a modern, comfortable environment, excellent service and good food. Fresh fish and crab with asparagus, beef, black sea flat fish, and pasta with crab are just some of the dishes. The Sochi boardwalk extends for several kilometers along the beach and is peppered with many cafes, restaurants and shops. Musicians perform along the beachfront and small shops have interesting attractions from feel cleaning Thai fish to fruit drinks and shooting galleries. For the serious shopper, Sochi has several large shopping malls. The Olymp is currently Sochi's largest mall with over 70 shops, food court, restaurants, metroplex theater and a massive supermarket. Familiar products like Heinz ketchup are among less familiar items like fresh sturgeon caviar as well as mock caviar. One of the most popular fish egg products is the fresh salmon eggs -- a far cry from fish bait --- these eggs are beautiful in color, creamy in taste and delicious served with pancakes and creme fraiche. Also creamy is the Russian ice cream with a spectrum of flavors. Some outstanding ones were the pistachio and dark, rich chocolate. At the Rodina Grand Spa hotel which has stunning grounds reaching to the water's edge is the Black Sea Beach Club. Here one can, in the season, lounge in the sun and raise a small flag in your hand when wishing a refill of your drink. There is much to do in Sochi including the Dendrary Botanical Garden, the largest subtropical park in Russia. But it was time to make the one-hour drive from Sochi to Krasnaya Polyana, home to the Rosa Khutor alpine ski resort. It is probably the world's largest construction projects already topping 50 billion dollars. Besides the six new stadiums, there are new roads, high speed rail, bridges, tunnels, hotels, villages, a theme park and a new huge power grid to run it all. The Western Caucasus mountains surrounding Polyana are breathtaking. The snow is remarkable, especially considering that one is near a seaside resort. From some of the runs one can, on a clear day observe the Black Sea. In the summer the temperatures in Sochi can rise above 100 degrees with abundant humidity. Skiing on North American-type snow with brilliant sunshine is unique for Europe. The downhill courses are challenging and the mountain is served by modern Poma gondolas and chairlifts. They worked well for the most part except one day when a power outage kept skiers waiting for about 45 minutes. The weather above Sochi is very unpredictable. Exactly one year before the Sochi games are to begin there was no snow. For more go to the website atw.tv President Putin loves Sochi and goes to his dacha there as often as he can. It is where he gave Gerard Depardieu his Russian passport. But Putin wasn't happy about the building of the Gorki ski jump which has already cost an estimated $265 million and still not finished ... so some heads rolled. In Russia the ruling powers can move heaven and earth to get things done and at Sochi, that seems to be happening right now.
Ukraine: Another Russian warship en route to the Syrian coast

00:39
The warship Nikolay Filchenhov left the port of Sevastopol from Russia's naval base in the Black Sea, on Friday. Filchenhov is one of two warships en route to the Eastern Mediterranean, which set sail to Novorossiysk, where it will replenish stocks and pick up cargo before sailing to the Syrian city of Tartus. Moscow has denied that this move has anything to do with bolstering its naval presence in the region ahead of possible Western military action against Syria. The Nikolay Filchenkov is a beachable general-purpose LST-type design Landing Ship capable of deploying a cargo of up to 300 troops and 1,700 tons of military hardware from ramps located at its bow and stern. When travelling at a speed of 15 knots it has a range of 10,000 miles. Onboard firepower includes one 122mm UMS-73 Grad-M bombardment RL and three SA-N-5 Grail launchers missile systems, along with one dual 57mm/70 DP and two dual 25mm AAs.

Eastern BlackSea Region of Turkey

00:49
The Black Sea Region Lush and green throughout the year, rocky mountains, the cool waters of the coast and plantations of tea, hazelnuts, tobacco and corn, the Black Sea is a unique part of the country. The main industry is farming, thanks mainly to the high rainfall, andin the summer the roadsides are lined with hazelnuts drying in the sun. The culture, cuisine, climate and even dialect is different to the rest of Turkey, and the coastal road stretches from east of Istanbul to the border with Georgia. The cities in this region are Amasya, Artvin, Bolu, Corum, Duzce, Giresun, Gumushane, Kastamonu, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sinop, Tokat, Trabzon Zonguldak, Bartin and Karabuk. Akcakoca is on the far western side of the coast, with endless hazelnutorchards. Inland to the east is Safranbolu, with a wonderful collection of old Ottoman houses, and Devek, famous for its intricately carved walking canes.Further along the coast are Inkum, Amasra and Cakraz, and then Sinop which has been a port for 1000 years and is still one of the biggest in the Black Sea. The town takes its name from the Amazon queen Sinope and local mythology suggests that femalewarriors, called Amazons, lived in this region. It is now an important industrial and commercial centre.Unye and Fatsa, east of Samsun, are popular holiday resorts with natural scenic beauty, beaches, accommodation, campsites and restaurants. Ordu is a charming city with hazelnut orchards stretching out for miles in all directions and 46km east isGiresun, with its castle perched on a steep rocky slope, crowning the city and overlooking the beach. This is where the Roman general Lucullus saw cherries for the first time, and liked them so much he introduced them into Europe.Trabzon is another important commercial port on the Black Sea, and it connects with ports in other Black Sea countries. Trabzon Castle was founded on an area shaped like a table, and the architecture that developed around the castle reflects Byzantine,Commagene and Ottoman styles. The city's most important building is the Ayasofya Museum, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes, and the exterior with reliefs. From Boztepe Park and the Ataturk Museum there are stunning panoramic views ofthe city. Inside the Altindere National Park near Macka, the Sumela Monastery is perched on high cliffs overlooking the Altindere valley, and was founded in the 14th century by Alexius III. WESTERN BLACKSEA REGION - TURKEY

15:55
Inside the monastery is a church, a library, various other rooms and asacred spring. The area around Rize is the wettest in the country with wonderful shades of green, and is the centre of Turkey's tea production with plantations on the high terraces. Hopa is the last Turkish port before reaching the Georgian border, and to the southis Artvin.
