But as you can see in this week's episode of Inside Jobs, creating art is a full-time job for Dropbox's Alice Lee. As an illustrator and product designer, Lee spends her days designing, doodling, and drawing, helping create the visual images that represent Dropbox and all its various offerings to the outside world. If you ask anyone at Medium who the company's key employees are, Pete Davies' name will likely crop up near the top of the list. But "product scientist" is one of those classic tech company job titles that usually elicits a blank stare and polite nod when it's the answer to the "What do you do?" question at a party. So it was fascinating to meet Pete Davies in person and find out what exactly it is that he does, and why he's so good at doing it. As an industrial designer it is always surprising to learn how blurred the role of a designer in an new product development team still seems to be. Especially in English speaking countries like NZ, many use the term synonymously for engineering and design practices even though there is a clear distinction and expert skill sets involved (which is obvious in different university programmes and degrees). The misconception that both would be able to conduct each others work to the same level of expertise - especially within complex projects and a demanding market - is astounding and sometimes frustrating. Oliver Neuland pleads instead for the work in close symbiosis, with respect and an open mind. This will enable outstanding results good for the business and consumer. He compares the role of an product/ industrial designer with that of an architect, who not only provides the basic function of structural sound shelter, but a building which is tailor made to the people (and organization) meant to use it and responses to the environment is is located in. Like the designer is he the advocate for the user far beyond basic functionality.

During the early stages of innovation, expenditures of effort often lead to small improvements in the performance of that technology. As the technology begins to develop, similar expenditures of effort begin to produce larger improvements in performance.

The brazuca ball will be the icon of the 2014 World Cup. In this video the adidas innovation team explains how it discovered the ball's most important secret. The essential and most central question that drives the adidas innovation team in the development process is: "What makes a good ball?" Just as with the development of many other cutting edge sport technologies, it comes down to a mixture of many things, from material development to aerodynamic research and mathematics (even the world of geometry plays an important role) to constantly improve factors like roundness, mass-balance, flight stability and texture which all have an effect on a balls performance. The challenge lies in addressing all these concerns but to still keep it simple. brazuca for example is built in perfect symmetry out of 6 totally identical panels. This achievement stands for exactly this radical simplification. But developing a new technology is the one thing; the other one is to prove it works. Therefore you'll learn in the video how and with which tools adidas was testing brazuca to ensure it makes all grades for being the 2014 world cups official match ball. The video is part of a series of clips portraying employees from behind the scenes of adidas Football. Eleven key players from the adidas Innovation Team, Football Design, Sports Marketing, Athlete Services, Football Product Management and more share informative, entertaining and very personal insights about their jobs, the adidas philosophy and their personal experience of having been an central member of the adidas World Cup team. It shows that the sports business comes in many faces and variety. A lot of action takes place behind the scenes and goes unnoticed by the public. adidas opens its doors and lets you have a peak at all the various workflows behind the sports industry.
