Explaining the Oracle v. Google Case
I am back after an unplanned and unfortunately too long hiatus but, to apologize, I wanted to try and explain the one case that's been the most requested and the one I've most avoided: Oracle v. Google. This is a very technically and legally complicated case but it comes down to two questions: Is an API copyright protectable and, if so, did Google infringe Oracle by copying it? This, to put it modestly, is a bizarre one, unfortunately, there are too many PDFs for me to re-host them all but, fortunately, for us, the EFF has many of the PDFs here: https://www.eff.org/cases/oracle-v-google And Groklaw some of the others here: http://www.groklaw.net/staticpages/index.php?page=OracleGoogle In the meantime, you can find me at all of these fine places: Site: https://www.plagiarismtoday.com Business: https://copybyte.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/plagiarismtoday Facebook: https://twitter.com/plagiarismtoday

Toward Low-Latency Java Applications
Increasingly Java is being used to build applications that come with low-latency requirements. To meet these tight latency requirements, developers have to understand any potential source of jitter so that their code does not rub them the wrong way. One traditional source of jitter is the stop-the-world pause that comes when a garbage collection brings all your application threads to a safe point. However, there are several things developers do to control GC frequency and duration. This session demonstrates the memory cost of using XML parsers such as SAX and compares that with low-latency alternatives. What do the Oracle/Google shenanigans mean to the Java Developer?
Recent news about the legal battle which Oracle and Google have been involved with in the courts has made many Java developers wonder what this actually means to them. Should they be careful about what and how they code in the future to avoid legal repercussions? What do they need to understand or know going forward? Is this just a problem for Java or development in general? Following on from the recent vJug discussion, this session session is led by some of the key stalwarts in our industry, who will aim to provide opinions of what the news means to them. We also have a patent attorney present, but it should be noted that you should seek professional legal advice if you rely on it. This session will be in discussion format and will be heavily focused on Q&A by the audience. Joining Martijn and Ben on this panel are Stephen Colebourne and Ted Neward. Come along, get involved and air your views. This could be lively. Authors: Martijn Verburg Martijn Verburg (aka 'the Diabolical Developer') herds Cats in the Java/open source communities and is constantly humbled by the creative power to be found there. Currently he resides in London where he co-leads the London JUG (a JCP EC member), runs a couple of open source projects & drinks too much beer at his local pub. You can find him online moderating at the Javaranch or discussing (ranting?) subjects on the Programmers Stack Exchange site. Most recently he's become a regular speaker at conferences on Java, open source and software development and has recently wrapped up his first Manning title - "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" with his co-author Ben Evans. Visualizing Aircraft Data: Oracle IoT Cloud Service, Raspberry Pi, and Radio Surveillance
Jerry Ward, Managing Partner, Viscosity North America Rich Niemiec, Chief Innovation Officer, Viscosity North America Need to track a single aircraft or an entire fleet without spending a ton of money? In this session, the speakers explore real-life use cases for the Internet of Things and embedded systems with the Raspberry Pi. They build an inexpensive Raspberry Pi setup, including a dual-band Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) radio receiver, GPS receiver, network interface, and Java interface to Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service. They integrate this data with an Oracle JavaScript Extension Toolkit (Oracle JET) framework viewing traffic in real time. The FAA’s ADS-B is a precise satellite-based surveillance system that broadcasts real-time weather, uses GPS technology to determine any aircraft’s location and airspeed, and relays that data to those who are listening.

Legal Protection of APIs – Oracle vs. Google
This is a session given by Siri Mårtensson at Nordic APIs 2016 Platform Summit on October 26th, in Stockholm Sweden. Description: The case Oracle America Inc. vs. Google Inc. has been subject for a number of trials in the US courts and involves a number of questions regarding legal protection of APIs. One of the central issues was whether the “structure, sequence and organization” of an API was copyrightable and it was concluded by the appeals court that Oracles API was protected by copyright. However, in the latest ruling from May 26 2016, the jury found that Android did not infringe the Oracle-owned copyrights since Android’s use was protected by the exception of “fair use”. In Europe the starting point is that software and API:s are protected by copyright. However, there are also in Europe a number of exceptions to the scope of protection. Siri Mårtensson, Delphi Law firm, a lawyer and expert in IT- and Intellectual Property Law gives you an introduction to how APIs can be legally protected.

Oracle Vs Google on JAVA : Die Open Source DIE?
Tech Babble S3 E56 : 04/17/2012 As pointed out JAVA has been Open Source since 2006 now that Oracle owns it they want to stop that but it was realased under a GPL? They started with 900 claimes are and only 5 had any relevance. 4 of those have been invalidated by the patten office in pree trial, and the last one is set to likely expire before the case is over. So basicaly Win or Lose Orical wont really get any thing out of this isn the long run. What might happen if they they trick the court to say API can be copyrighted even when released under a GPL to brake the API model for the industry as a hole forcing every single application to create its own proprietary API that works for it and it alone unless they want to risk a nuisance suit. This would effectively set software development backwards over 20 years, as standards of any kind for any language would be impossible..

About Java, Sun and Oracle
Java software runs on everything from laptops to data centers, game consoles to scientific supercomputers. 1991 - James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton initiated the Java language project James Gosling has invented java and had many rounds of coffee when he got the idea. Initially named as Oak (after Oak tree near Gosling’s office), then it got changed to Green and finally got its JAVA name from Coffee. The name is selected after discussing with his mates as he wants something that was cool, unique, and easy to spell and fun to say. Gosling designed Java with a C/C++-style syntax that system and application programmers would find familiar. Java uses coffee cup logo interesting!!! 1995 - Sun Microsystems released the first public implementation of Java as Java 1.0 2006, Sun released Java virtual machine (JVM) as free and open-source software, (FOSS), under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). 2010 – Oracle acquisition of Sun and pledged to foster its growth On April 2, 2010, James Gosling resigned from Oracle. Why Elementary Schools should Teach Java | Andrew Svehaug | TEDxElCajonSalon
What if our schools made Computer Science as high of a priority as our sports programs? How young can students begin learning actual programming languages - such as Java? In this uplifting TEDx talk, Andrew Svehaug makes a case for why students should learn Java beginning in elementary school, and for how high expectations will benefit students of all backgrounds to be prepared for success in school and life. Andrew Svehaug is the Founder and CEO of Code To The Future, an organization dedicated to developing advanced Computer Science skills in students beginning in Kindergarten. He believes ensuring that all students have access to high-quality Computer Science and STEM programming is a social justice issue, and that high expectations are the key to equity in Computer Science Education. In an effort to create a replicable model for advanced Computer Science Education at the elementary school level, Code To The Future partnered with the Cajon Valley Union School District to launch America’s first K-5 Computer Science Magnet Schools. Among other distinct characteristics in this model, students as young as 4th grade begin learning Java in a programming environment used by professional software engineers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

JUGs, the JCP and Oracle vs Google
This is an open discussion between JUG leaders that are concerned about the Oracle vs Google rulings and repercussions. In this conversation, we'll talk about what was the ruling, the implications, the concerns that JUGs have, what the JCP has to do with it, and how this affects the community efforts like Adopt-a-JSR, Adopt-the-OpenJDK, the OpenJDK project and more. This talk is not a "bash Oracle" nor a "bash Google" discussion. The two companies are technology giants, and are each defending their own commercial interests. But their actions impact our groups and our members, and the news impact Java developers worldwide. As JUG leaders, we need to be informed of what is going on, so we can speak frankly with our groups members.
