Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD]

53:56
Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD] The Deep sea creature refers to organisms that live below the photic zone of the ocean. These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bars of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above. These creatures live in very demanding environments, such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. The water is between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius and has low oxygen levels. Due to the depth, the pressure is between 20 and 1,000 bars. Creatures that live hundreds or even thousands of meters deep in the ocean have adapted to the high pressure, lack of light, and other factors. The depths of the ocean are festooned with the most nightmarish creatures imaginable. You might think you’re safe, because these critters live thousands of feet down in a cold dark abyss, but the vampire squid, which looks like a nightmare umbrella, and the frilled shark—a literal living fossil—will live on in the recesses of your mind long after you’ve clicked away. Enjoy these deep sea horrors and try to have a relaxing day afterward. ► NOTE : I'm a big fan of National Geographic and I just collect the best parts of National Geographic. I do not make money from National Geographic's Video. Thanks You very much

Top 10 Most Bizarre Deep Sea Creatures Ever Discovered

Deep Sea Creatures are as bizarre as creatures get. From angler fish to giant squid, here are some of the weirdest bizarre deep sea creatures caught on tape. Subscribe for more! ► https://goo.gl/pgcoq1 ◄ Stay updated ► https://goo.gl/JyGcTt https://goo.gl/5c8dzr ◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: [email protected] Credit: https://pastebin.com/Pc2NrbsG Be Amazed at these top 10 most bizarre deep sea creatures in the world! Weird Octopuses - Octopuses are already strange creatures. Let's start off with the flapjack octopus which certainly looks like something out of a Disney movie . The informally named ‘Casper’ octopus gets the inspiration obviously from its ghastly look. For another Disney reference, look no further than the dumbo octopus . Angler Fish - Of course, we can't talk about the deep sea without mentioning just about every super wide-jawed oddity that lurks down there. On the top of the list is none other than the angler fish , which gets its name from its unusual hunting method, which involves luring prey close to its mouth using that weird luminescent appendage coming out of its head. Another frightening fish is the viperfish , measuring around 60 centimetres, or 23 inches in length. Probably even more hideous are deep-seadragonfishes , a similar class of wide-jawed monsters which make viperfish look like their incomplete cousins. Pelican Flounder - The main challenge for any deep-sea organism isn’t actually the absence of light, but the crushing pressure levels. Giant Isopods and Amphipods - Sure, ancient trilobites and modern horseshoe crabs may look cute and all, but out on the deep sea floor, there are creepy crawlies that can take you millions of years back into the age of the giant insects. Spider Crabs - Speaking of crustaceans, crabs also subjected to the same freakish transformations when the deep sea is taken into account. The Hoff crab is another ghastly version of its normal counterpart. Colossal Squid - The colossal squid is a gigantic cephalopod that is easily more than twice the size of a regular human. Giant squid are another huge squid species. Harp Sponge - As fearsome as they already are, sea anemones and other similar creatures have at least taught us that the oceans are also home to a number of immobile predatory feeders. Sea Toads - Siphonophores - Deep sea siphonophores are long lines of jellyfish-like entities connected together, only guided by the organism behind and in front. Gulper Eels - If there is one thing in the deep that is the literal stuff of nightmares, it would definitely have to be the Gulper eel . This is to be expected though, as at 8,200 meters deep, the cusk eel is officially one of the deepest ocean dwelling creatures on record.

Living on the Ocean Floor

Living on the Ocean Floor - footage recorded by Vincent Zintzen, Te Papa Fish Team, Natural Environment. Film recorded using a baited Lander in various locations and depths around NZ. The video unit lights up the dark world of the deep sea. Food is scarce so the animals that live in the depths are attracted to the bait. The camera reveals the interesting behaviour of these creatures as they strive to survive in their extreme environment The footage of the seal shark attacking the hagfish, and getting a mouthful of slime for his troubles, is a good example of the knowledge gained through this difficult and exacting research. 5 EXTREMELY CREEPY Deep Sea Creatures

03:00
Here are 5 Extremely Creepy Deep Sea Creatures Click Here To Subscribe! http://bit.ly/EliteFacts List : 5. The Ningen This creature from the depths of the ocean may be just about the creepiest thing you could ever see. The reason for this, is that it looks just like a human even having strange limbs that resemble arms and legs. The name Ningen is actually human in Japanese. However, there is no need to panic and worry that the world will be taken over by strange alien sea creatures, because there has never been any official sightings of this little beastie and general opinion is that it’s just a freaky urban myth much like the mermaid. 4. Mantis Shrimp This rainbow hued little creature is not as nice as it looks. It is actually extremely clever and horribly dangerous. One of its main talents is being able to see colours that far surpass even the furthest imagination of humans. As well as, it is an efficient killing machine, it has two appendages at the front of its body which can lash out so powerfully that they cause the water surrounding the creature to reach boiling point! So, even the clever prey that have managed to avoid the physical attack will be rendered defenceless by the boiling water. 3. Pelican Eel Eel’s in general are quite creepy looking, but this one has taken it to another level. This slippery character is basically just a huge mouth with a tail attached. The mouth itself is absolutely terrifying, it unhinges so that its owner can catch prey that is twice its size. The chosen prey is then stored in a pouch within the lower jaw. However, the tail can be just as weird as it possesses a small light producing organ that is called a photophore and this gives off an eerie pink glow. 2. Humpback Anglerfish The female of this species most certainly has a licence to kill. She uses her feminine charm which comes in the form of a bioluminescent lure dangling over her forehead to draw in prey that she can destroy with her rows of ferocious teeth. 1. Predatory Tunicate This is basically a Venus Fly Trap that lives underwater. They are almost completely translucent and they stick themselves to the sea floor and wait patiently for a tasty meal to come along. Once an unsuspecting critter falls for the trap the creatures snap their hoods shut until they’ve had their fill. We are surrounded by ocean, yet for the most part, we have no idea what creatures are sharing the planet with us. 5 STRANGE Deep Sea Creatures - Part 1?

06:56
Its pitch black, extremely cold, immensely pressurised, low in food and oxygen and insanely vast. I'm of course talking about the Deep Sea. To survive in inconceivably extreme environments like this, animals of the deep must be pretty unbelievable. They are. Mainly because these mysterious creatures have adapted in ways that will surely blow your mind away - for a multitude of reasons. At a depth of 1800 meters or more it’s the largest habitat on earth, so let’s explore 5 unbelievable creatures found there. Subscribe for more! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedSubscribe ◄ Stay updated and vote on new videos by liking our facebook! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedFacebook ◄ Get in touch or join the team: http://goo.gl/forms/2lOZyOeL3N All links, Credits and Sources used in this video are contained in the document below: https://goo.gl/C2NF62 SPOILER ALERT!!! Watch the video for a more informative and entertaining experience (though the list is below): ➢5. The Spotlight Loosejaw This alien from the deep has highly-adapted weaponry and surveillance gear. It has a bioluminescent flashlight below its eyes that is undetectable to its prey and has an incredibly large and fast jaw. ➢4. The Barreleye Fish This animal has adapted in a unique way, to say the least. It's got a transparent head and unusual barrelled eyes. got 360 degree vision and is so illusive that only one has ever been filmed. ➢3. Cookiecutter shark Don’t let this deep sea creatures silly name and wide smile fool you because it's actually really vicious and definitely doesn't pick fights on creatures of its own size. This is because it preys on just about every large and medium-sized creature it shares an ocean with, from whales to seals and even other sharks. ➢2. Giant Isopod These bottom feeders are thought to live at depths of up to 2200 meters where they like to burry themselves in the mud for protection. They have an extremely slow metabolism to conserve energy and can starve themselves for years. ➢1. Wolf-Trap Angler An anglerfish with an unusual jaw, which is how it got its name. The anglerfish is certainly an unbelievable creature more generally though. It hunts with some sort of fishing rod on its head and when it comes to reproducing the male simply bites the female... eternally.

10 Creepy Sea Creatures You Didn't Know Existed

04:33
Did you know any of these amazing and scary deep sea creatures? It's hard to believe these bizarre animals exist. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg 'Hatchet Fish' footage by Filmic Art : www.filmicart.com For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Description: There is a vast world below the ocean that we have yet to discover in its entirety. While we seem to know nearly everything about the land, the sea still leaves much to be desired. As you go down into the depths of the ocean, you’ll notice a lot will change. For one, you’ll begin to be immersed in darkness. Second, the pressure will change. So, the creatures that have been discovered deep in the oceanic depths are quite different biologically, and they can be quite terrifying to look at. But once we begin to understand them, we can start to learn more about our existence, and even come closer to curing diseases and solving some of the world’s most complex mysteries. However, the sea creatures that have been discovered recently have shown to be just downright creepy and terrifying. You probably recall the Angler Fish, especially if you’re seen the Disney movie, “Finding Nemo”. If you didn’t realize that this fish is the real deal, get ready for new additions to your nightmares. It wasn’t a work of fiction or some messed up fantasy of some Disney Imagineer. The fish that we see in this video is actually female, and the male is a small weakling, wandering the sea to find a female with her pheromones. The male then attaches itself to the female and becomes a parasite. Every part of the male merges with the female except for the testicles, which the female uses to impregnate herself. Jokes aside, this is quite a fascinating process despite how creepy it is. Similar to the angler fish is the Viper Fish, which has a natural extra attachment that illuminates in the darkness of the sea with the purpose of attracting prey. The blob fish is a creature that you wonder what God was smoking or shooting up when he decided to create the blob fish. This fish has no bones, and literally just hangs out on the ocean floor and hopes that food comes to its mouth. Whether you want to worship the blob fish for its epic level of laziness or wonder how in the world the species is still in existence with such an apathetic demeanor, it’s still creepy to look at. Then we have the goblin shark, which is pretty much like the underwater version of the alien from the movie “Alien” due to its protruding mouth. The goblin shark has a large snout and needle-like teeth that are sharp and deadly. For a completely random sea creature, we have the Christmas Tree Worms, which really look like tiny walking fir trees that come in different colors. The branches or hair-like appendages help them breathe as well as consume phytoplankton. Then we have the sea pig, which looks nothing like the pigs we have on land. But instead the sea pig is a multi-tubed foot sea creature that is closely related to the sea cucumber. It eats by pulling water and absorbing organic food. Quite innovative, even though it looks creepy. For more creepy sea creatures, check out the rest of the video for more. The anglerfish: The original approach to deep-sea fishing

02:19
Deep-sea anglerfish are strange and elusive creatures that are very rarely observed in their natural habitat. Fewer than half a dozen have ever been captured on film or video by deep diving research vehicles. This little angler, about 9 cm long, is named Melanocetus. It is also known as the Black Seadevil and it lives in the deep dark waters of the Monterey Canyon. MBARI's ROV Doc Ricketts observed this anglerfish for the first time at 600 meters on a midwater research expedition in November 2014. We believe that this is the first video footage ever made of this species alive and at depth. Deepest Part of The Oceans - Full Documentary HD

44:54
Measuring the Greatest Ocean Depth The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans. In 2010 the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) below sea level with an estimated vertical accuracy of ± 40 meters. If Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water. The first depth measurements in the Mariana Trench were made by the British survey ship HMS Challenger, which was used by the Royal Navy in 1875 to conduct research in the trench. The greatest depth that they recorded at that time was 8,184 meters (26,850 feet). In 1951, another Royal Navy vessel, also named the "HMS Challenger," returned to the area for additional measurements. They discovered an even deeper location with a depth of 10,900 meters (35,760 feet) determined by echo sounding. The Challenger Deep was named after the Royal Navy vessel that made these measurements. In 2009, sonar mapping done by researchers aboard the RV Kilo Moana, operated by the University of Hawaii, determined the depth to be 10,971 meters (35,994 feet) with a potential error of ± 22 meters. The most recent measurement, done in 2010, is the 10,994 meter ( ± 40 meter accuracy) depth reported at the top of this article, measured by the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping.

Unbelievable and Mysterious Creatures of the Ocean: The Deep Dark

07:04
Unbelievable and Mysterious Creatures of the Ocean: The Deep Dark The term deep sea creature refers to organisms that live below the photic zone of the ocean. These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bars of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above. These creatures live in very harsh environments, such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. Jellyfish like organisms that create their own light are found in parts of these low leve sea waters. They are gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell with tentacles. There's still more to be discovered but with need to interact with them with utmost care, because they are fragile. A whole new world is below the enormous oceans. 13 Glowing ALIEN Fish From The Deep Sea

10:04
From Fluorescent Viperfish and Bioluminescent Catsharks to Glowing Anglerfish and Genetically Modified Glofish. These are 13 Glowing Fish. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR 13 GloFish Let’s start off this video about fish that glow, with GloFish! They are a patented and trademarked brand of genetically engineered fluorescent fish. The first fluorescent zebrafish were created at the National University of Singapore in 1999, by scientists trying to make a fish that would detect pollution by glowing in toxic waters. They combined the zebrafish embryo with genes that encode fluorescent proteins from jellyfish and sea coral. Yorktown Technologies, a company from Austin, Texas, bought the worldwide marketing rights to the fluorescent fish and in 2003, introduced the GloFish in the United States. It is the first and only genetically engineered animal to be publicly available and can only be found in the US. 12 Stoplight Loosejaw At number 12, we have the first naturally glowing fish on our list, the Stoplight Loosejaw. A type of barbeled dragonfish, it lives in the mesopelagic areas of all oceans. The mesopelagic zone is between 200 and 1000 metres below the surface of the water. Sunrays usually stop well before the 1 kilometre mark so creatures living here need to adapt to the darkness. Like our loosejaw, who lurks below the waters looking for zooplankton, with its huge mouth wide open, while using bioluminescence to look for Copepods, its favourite food. It is called a Stoplight Loosejaw because it has two big photophores, one red and one green and they look like the colors on a traffic stoplight. Due to the way light travels and dissipates in deep water, the red photophore allows it to see prey without being detected. They are also called rat-trap fish because of the unusual open structure of their jaws. 8 Cookiecutter Shark Moving on to the Cookiecutter Shark, or the Cigar Shark, an oceanic fish that likes to swim at depth of over 3 kilometres below the water. The name "cookiecutter shark" refers to its feeding habit of gouging round plugs, as if cut out with a cookie cutter, out of larger animals. Marks made by cookiecutter sharks have been found on a wide variety of marine mammals and fishes, as well as on submarines, undersea cables, and even human bodies. But the Cookiecutter Shark also glows in the dark, one of the most glowing of all fish, it’s bioluminescence persists up to 3 hours after being out of water. The photophores are strategically places on its underside to disrupt the light coming from above, confusing predators and hiding it’s real silhouette. 7 Lanternfish This method of camouflaging yourself with light is also used by the the Lantern Fish. A species of small, deep water fish, it is one of the most widely distributed fish. It is estimated that 65% of the oceans biomass are Lanternfish, with 246 species discovered so far. Small fish, they are between 2 and 30 centimetres long, although most of them stay well under 15 centimetres. They are masters of disguise, using their bioluminescence and counterillumination to confuse predators and mask themselves on the bottoms of the oceans. Thy also have gas bladders that confuse other fish that use echolocation or sonars. 2 Viperfish Next we take a closer look at the Viperfish. They are between 30 and 60 centimetres long and live in tropical and temperate waters and swim at great depths, 1500 metres below sea level during the day and down to 4000 metres during the night. They have snake like bodies and long, needle like teeth, and they are really ugly. They are predatory fish and feed on almost anything they gets their teeth into. The Viperfish has 3 types of photophores on its body, used mainly to attract prey. They have microscopic spheres all over their dorsal side, large spheres with pigment, reflector and lens, and finally, large, bell shaped organs grouped together along the dorsal surface. Although it may look like the viperfish is covered in scales, it is in fact covered by a thick, transparent coating of an unknown substance. 1 Anglerfish And at number one, probably the most famous and bizzare glowing fish, the Anglerfish. There are many types of Anglerfish, all over the globe, living at a variety of depths. But what all Anglerfish species have in common are their huge mouths full of razor sharp teeth and the esca, a fleshy growth on their heads, that houses light producing bacteria, and acts like bait for their prey, luring them straight into the fishs mouth. Anglerfish are a delicacy. Some Anglerfish species are a source of food. In North America, Europe and East-Asia, Goosefish are widely used in cooking and is often compared to a lobster tail in taste and texture. In Asia, especially in Korea and Japan, the liver of the Monkfish is considered a delicacy.

The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. 10 creepy aliens discovered in the deep depths of the ocean. Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] It’s no secret that the ocean is one of the most common phobias. The ocean encompasses all of humanity’s most primal fears. It’s gigantic, dark, mysterious, and is capable of ending your life in a million different ways. Oh, and it’s filled with creepy creatures. Though we know all about the cute, friendly animals, it’s the deep-sea creatures that inspire fear in the hearts of many. The deeper one goes, the creepier the animals get. But all deep-sea animals are weird-looking because they have to be. To survive in such a harsh and inhospitable location, animals have adapted in strange ways to combat the extreme cold, total darkness, atmospheric pressure, and other predators. This molds normal animals into alien-like creatures. The creepiest fact of all is that most of the following creatures have only recently been discovered. If these guys have evaded capture for so long, we wonder what else is lurking down below. World's 10 Most Bizarre Sea Creatures

03:04
Here are 10 of the more unusual creatures found underwater. From monstrous to ethereal, the sea is filled with all sorts of magnificent specimens. Here are 10 of the more unusual creatures found underwater. Number 10. Siphonophores. They're clear and fragile, but given the length and bioluminescence of some of them, they can be quite a spectacle to behold. Select ones have been measured at over 40 meters long. Be careful around them though. They break easily. Number 9. Vampire Squid. Like its namesake, this cephalopod wanders about in the dark. In order to survive the deep area it occupies, it has had to give up some other functions, like spewing ink clouds. Number 8. Anaximenes Amphipod. Looking like the offspring of a water glass and an alien, this mysterious diaphanous crustacean was spotted off the coast of Southern Turkey. Number 7. Goblin Shark. Ideally suited for a sci-fi horror movie, this sea beast is actually built for roaming around the deep sea. Its beady little eyes are the result of not surfacing often. Number 6. Dumbo Octopus. It was named thus because it has two flaps on its head that resemble big ears, just like the cartoon elephant has. When these creatures float around they take on an umbrella-like appearance. Number 5. Colossal Squid. Yeah, they're big. These squid can reach about 17 feet in length. Despite the claims gone viral on social media, they do not grow to be the size of military submarines. Number 4. Barreleye. Transparent fish are not rare, but this one only has a see-through head, making it quite unique. It has eyes that completely rotate around their sockets, making it possible for the barreleye to look through itself. Number 3. Disco Clam. It's a bivalve and a light show. Scientists have discovered that it produces the pulses by moving its silica-covered lips back and forth to catch and reflect rays, just like a disco ball. Number 2. Predatory Tunicate. They live anchored to the walls of deep canyons and must feed on whatever passes by -- sort of like a venus flytrap. And if there aren't any other tunicates nearby, they're able to reproduce on their own. Number 1. Gigantocypris. Oddly, it's also known as the Giant ostracod, even though it's only about 2-and-a-half centimeters wide. 20 percent of its body is taken up by their eyes, which are made of big reflectors and light-sensitive materials.

The Deep Sea - Top 10 Facts

11:10
The deep sea is the largest habitat on the planet, taking up to 95% of the earth’s living space. Yet, the deep sea also the most unexplored environment, despite being one of the most amazing places on the planet. Throughout this video we’ll explain 10 amazing interesting facts about the deep sea. Nobody knows where it begins - The ‘deep-sea’ is a contested term, lacking a single exact definition. For some it refers to the any part of the ocean where scary, odd and downright bizarre creatures live. For others, it’s a descriptive definition of specific ocean depths. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04fay - Deep sea creatures are purposefully incredibly diverse. - Species from the deep may look like they’ve evolved in strange ways just to freak us out, but in fact they’ve evolved that way for specific survival purposes. For instance, to take advantage of the lack of light, most animals are transparent or red, a colour which few creatures can detect and is camouflaging in the darkness. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2h - Exploring the deep is tremendously testing - An obvious fact, but one you probably haven’t seriously thought about. Part of the reason why it’s taken us so long to explore is because only recently have we created new generations of incredibly sophisticated underwater vehicles that are able to venture so deep. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2i - Only three people have ever been to the deep sea - Due to the previously mentioned extremities, the deep sea may be the final frontier of exploration. Many more people have then been into space than to the deep sea. Like seriously, a loaaad more. Over 500 people have been into space, whereas only 3 people have ever ventured over 1000 fathoms into the depth of our oceans. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2j - New species are being discovered daily - Since it’s largely unexplored, each time a vehicle is sent into the deep, it’s highly likely to unearth a new discovery. Over a recent year-long period the World Register of Marine Species reported discovering 1451 new marine species, of which many were found to be from the deep sea. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2k - It’s a giant’s playground - The term Deep-sea gigantism exists in zoology for a reason. It refers to the tendency for deep-sea dwelling animals to be larger in size than their shallower-water relatives. We're not sure whether it comes about as a result of adaptation for scarce resources, greater pressure, or for other reasons. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2l - Some amazing ecosystems exist on the ocean floor - In 1977 a deep-sea research expedition made history as they found hydrothermal vents releasing mineral rich water at the bottom of the ocean. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2m - Geothermal vents aren’t the only thriving ecosystems on the ocean floor - Lush Deep-water coral gardens of various sizes, colours and shapes are able to survive in the Icy cold and extremely dim waters of up to 6000m (20,000 ft) below the ocean’s surface. In fact, scientists have discovered nearly as many species of deep-sea corals as shallow-water species. Unlike shallow-water corals, deep-sea corals don’t need sunlight but rather obtain the energy and nutrients they need to survive by trapping tiny organisms in passing currents. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2n - The deep-sea may solve many of our problems - Some organisms that live in deep-sea coral habitats and the deep sea in general produce chemicals with enormous potential for future medicinal or commercial products such as pharmaceuticals, enzymes, pesticides or cosmetics. Credit: http://linkbun.ch/04f2o - The sea floor is a barren land - Put all your thoughts of geothermal vents and deep-sea coral reefs aside because the vast majority of the seafloor is featureless mud. On the face of it, it’s pretty similar to the empty expanses of outer space, but in space you can see everything using telescopes.
