Perhaps this is unsurprising given that it’s also the graveyard of ambition. It’s the city where stars shine bright but dreams are torn apart, and beneath the glitz and glamour lurks a seamier underworld of mystery and violence. Is it really so strange to imagine that movie idols and would-be stars are still desperately trying to avoid obscurity by getting the attention of the living from beyond the grave? This densely populated neighborhood is notable as the home of the U.S. film industry, including several of its historic studios, and its name has come to be a shorthand reference for the industry and the people associated with it. Hollywood was a small community in 1870 and was incorporated as a municipality in 1903. It was consolidated with the city of Los Angeles in 1910, and soon thereafter a prominent film industry emerged, eventually becoming the most recognizable film industry in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood The Hollywood Hills are a part of the Santa Monica Mountains and also a hillside neighborhood of the same name in the central region of the city of Los Angeles, California. A total of 21,588 people lived in the neighborhood's 7.05 square miles, according to the 2000 U.S. census. The median household income in 2008 dollars was $69,277, considered high for the city but about average for the county. Madonna’s Former Mansion And The Hollywood Sign | Castillo Del Lago | Bugsy Siegel House

13:12
In this video I wander the Hollywood Hills and take you to Madonna’s former mansion, the famous (and infamous) Castillo Del Lago, and to the foot of the Hollywood sign, giving you historical tidbits, trivia, and a photo shoot along the way. The Mulholland Highway mansion known popularly as the Madonna House is actually called Castillo del Lago, a name that aptly describes its imposing size and spectacular vistas of Lake Hollywood. Its 300-degree view also features Los Angeles, the ocean and–on clear days–Catalina. Designed by John De Lario for the oilman Patrick Longdon, Castillo del Lago has been a landmark since its completion in 1926. And though Los Angeles has grown ten-fold since its construction, the house remains a stately, solitary presence, all but invisible from the trail that runs alongside its massive retaining wall. The wall, concealing a steep driveway, has itself become a landmark since Madonna, after buying the house for $5 million in 1993, had it painted with cream and crimson stripes, an act that apparently outraged the neighbors. (Christopher Ciccone, Madonna’s brother and former interior designer, says it was inspired by a church in Portofino.) Though now somewhat faded, it remains an arresting sight–if an ironic choice for a woman who complained the paparazzi were invading her privacy. LA Landmark Sign Hollywood was vandalised on Sunday to read 'Hollyweed'

LA Landmark Sign Hollywood Altered To Read 'Hollyweed' In New Year By Ians The Hollywood Sign, a landmark and American cultural icon located in Los Angeles, was vandalised on Sunday to read 'Hollyweed', celebrating the recent legalisation of recreational marijuana in California. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), surveillance footage caught one person dressed in all black sneaking up to the sign around 3 a.m. and spending about an hour and a half transforming the O' s to E' s by two pieces of black trap with graphic of anti-nuclear war and love, Xinhua news agency reported. Robert Payan of LAPD was quoted by the Los Angeles Times as saying that it could be a New Year prank or a work of "thrill seeker". So far LAPD was reviewing security footage to try to track down the trespasser but had not any suspect. Thanks for watching Leave comments and Subscribe - Newsokia -

Hollywood Sign History - Decades TV Network

02:19
It started out as a temporary ad in 1923 for a new housing development in the hills above Los Angeles, California. The 50-foot-tall block letters placed on the hillside above L.A.’s Hollywood district was selling “Hollywood-Land.” But decades later the sign had fallen into disrepair. Many Angeleno’s wanted it gone. In 1949 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce came to the rescue. The group recognized the sign’s value as a symbol that defined their neighborhood. It had become an instantly recognizable landmark that’s still known around the world and is a part of pop culture.

Various men working on sign FAMOUS HOLLYWOOD LANDMARK TO GET A SPRUCE UP Work got underway on Tuesday (2nd October 2012) to give Tinseltown's most iconic landmark, the Hollywood sign, a spruce up ahead of its 90th birthday next year. The sign, which is located on the Hollywood hills in Los Angeles, California, is being given a new coat of paint for the first time in 35 years. "We have to put on 2700 pounds of paint on nine letters and that is about fifteen houses worth of paint," said Chris Baumgart of the Hollywood Sign Trust. The project has been sponsored by the Hollywood Sign Trust, Sherwin-Williams and Duggan & Associates. Carlos Pereira, who is a painter for the project, said he was happy to be part of something that is recognized globally: "I was excited to paint a landmark, something that I can show to my daughter later on, that I did that is recognized worldwide." When the sign was first built in the early 1920s, it read "Hollywoodland," as it was originally meant to be an outdoor advertisement campaign for a suburban housing development of the same name. "The sign was built in 1923, it was only supposed to last a year-and-a-half and it was an advertisement to sell houses up on the hillside," confirmed Baumgart. The facelift is expected to take eight to ten weeks to complete. During that time, Los Angeles' most famous feature will be stripped down to sheet metal, primed and given a new coat of white paint. 'Hollyweed': Prankster Alters L.A.'s Landmark Sign

00:46
The iconic hillside sign overlooking Southern California's film-and-television hub was defaced overnight in honor of marijuana. Residents awoke on Sunday to find "Hollyweed" staring down at them in four-story, white letters from Los Angeles' Mount Lee, where a version of the picture-ready "Hollywood" sign was first erected in 1923. City surveillance cameras captured footage of someone dressed in black about 3 a.m. (1100 GMT) whom police believe was behind the conversion, Sgt. Robert Payan of the Los Angeles Police Department said in a phone interview. Material similar to a tarp was placed over the two O's to make them appear as E's, and park rangers were assessing how to remove them, Payan said. There were no suspects, but the person if caught could be charged with misdemeanor trespassing, he said.A ballot measure to make recreational marijuana legal for adults was easily approved by California voters on Nov. 8, opening the most populous U.S. state to the burgeoning commercial cannabis market, although the drug remains illegal under U.S. federal law. Rapper Snoop Dogg, a noted cannabis consumer, tweeted a photo of the sign on Sunday and said: "#hollyweed - that's were I get my mail. #merryjane." The Hollywood sign remains a popular spot for hikers and tourists, who used to be able to walk up to the sign and take a picture. Now, a fence blocks people, and accessing the sign is difficult. The famed vista with the Hollywood sign was nearly spoiled by development in 2010 until a conservation group, with donations from Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner and others, purchased adjacent land to save the view. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/axj0ZZ_csL8/us-california-hollywood-prank-idUSKBN14L1BL http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Hollyweed? L.A. Landmark Vandalized

00:47
A prankster vandalized the famous Hollywood sign over night. The vandal managed to change the iconic sign overlooking Los Angeles to read "Hollyweed,". According to L.A. Police Officer Christopher Garcia, they believe the vandal is -- probably a man, and that in order to alter the sign he likely used tarps "to change the O's in the sign to E's." Security camera footage shows the vandal committed the crime between midnight and 2 a.m. local time. Police have been unable to decipher the race or height of the man because it was dark and raining. http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/01/us/hollywood-hollyweed-sign/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Hollywood Sign Changed To Hollyweed

00:48
Los Angeles residents awoke early Sunday to see that one thing, at least, looked different in the New Year: the Hollywood sign. Armed with four tarpaulins, a prankster had climbed Mount Lee under the cover of night to edit the iconic landmark, which was changed to "HOLLYWeeD.” Security footage recorded at 3 a.m. Sunday showed a “lone individual” climbing up the mountain, scaling the sign’s ladders and hanging tarpaulins over the O’s to change them to E's, said Sgt. Guy Juneau of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Security Services division. It could have been a New Year’s Eve prank, Juneau said, or the work of “a thrill seeker.” The surveillance footage showed a man dressed in black, tactical-style gear. One of the tarpaulins was decorated with a peace sign, and another with a heart. Because the sign was not damaged, the incident will be investigated as misdemeanor trespassing. The police have no suspects. Some Angelenos joked that the alteration reflected California’s recent vote to legalize recreational marijuana. The New Year’s Day change is far from the first time the Hollywood sign has been edited by artists and pranksters. The sign, erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a housing development, originally read “Hollywoodland. Residents of Los Angeles' most famous neighbourhood woke up on New Year's Day to find the world-famous Hollywood sign had been changed to read "Hollyweed". Local media reported that police were treating the incident as minor trespass and were investigating. The sign on Mount Lee is made of 45-foot (13.7m) tall letters. Voters in California approved the legalisation of marijuana in a ballot held at the same time as the presidential election - on 8 November. The prank has not caused lasting damage to the sign, however, as parts of both "O" letters were covered by tarpaulins to make them look like a lower-case letter "E". The Los Angeles Times reports that a single person was recorded on security cameras climbing the sign to hang the materials. A similar prank took place in 1976, to mark a relaxation in the state's marijuana laws. The vandal -- who police think is probably a man -- used tarps to change the O's in the sign to E's, he said. The vandal was caught on security-camera footage between midnight and 2 a.m. local time, but police can't tell his race or height because it was dark and raining, Garcia said. The "Hollyweed" sign remained up until around 11 a.m., when authorities took down the tarps used to change the lettering. Estevan Montemayor, a spokesman for Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu, whose district includes the Hollywood sign, had earlier promised the iconic sign would be restored to its normal state. "We don't know who did it but park rangers are going up there very soon to take down the draping that was put on top of the 'O' to alter the sign," Montemayor said Sunday morning. There are sensors at the sign that trigger an alarm for police, but because the sensors are only in certain areas of the letters, it's possible to avoid them. There's a road accessible to the public by foot and car behind the sign. "We believe this person came from behind the sign," Garcia said. Betsy Isroelit with the Hollywood Sign Trust told CNN that the last time the sign was vandalized to read "Hollyweed" was in 1976. Police Officer Christopher Garcia, who works in the agency's security service division.

Welcome to Hollyweed: Prankster alters famous landmark sign

01:17
The famous Hollywood sign high in the hills over Los Angeles got a facelift when someone altered two of its letters to make it Hollyweed. According to local police, unidentified thrill-seekers had climbed up and arranged tarps over the two letter "O's" to make them look like "E's. The letters are not small, each is 45 feet high, and so the feat would have required not just bravado but considerable athleticism. The daring act may have been taken in celebration of a measure approved in November when California voters passed an amendment legalising recreational use of marijuana. It was not the first such incident since the sign was first erected in 1923 -- at the time as "Hollywoodland". HOLLYWEED - Hollywood Sign Changed To Hollyweed

01:51
. Residents of Los Angeles woke up to a new year and a big change: their iconic Hollywood sign reading Hollyweed. A vandal, dressed all in black, scaled the sign around 3am and threw huge white and black tarpaulins over the Os to make them look like Es. Police are investigating the incident, which was caught on security footage. Sergeant Robert Payan said the person climbed a protective fence around the sign and then scaled each letter to make the change. The vandal could face a misdemeanour trespassing if caught. Members of the public are forbidden from accessing the area around the landmark in the Hollywood Hills. Park rangers have since removed the tarpaulins. The prank may be a nod to Californian voters approving Proposition 64 in November, which means the recreational use of marijuana will become legal from 2018. Famous Hollywood Sign - Time Lapse

00:08
The Hollywood Sign is a landmark and American cultural icon located in Los Angeles, California. It is situated on Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills area of the Santa Monica Mountains. The sign overlooks the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. "HOLLYWOOD" is spelled out in 45-foot-tall (14 m) and 350-foot-long (110 m) white capital letters. It was originally created as an advertisement for local real estate development in 1923, but it garnered increasing recognition after the sign was left up. The sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism, but it has since undergone restoration, including the installation of a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization. From the ground, the contours of the hills give the sign its "wavy" appearance, as reflected in the Hollywood Video logo, for example. When observed at a comparable altitude, as in the photo shown on the right, the letters appear nearly level. The sign makes frequent appearances in popular culture, particularly in establishing shots for films and television programs set in or around Hollywood. Signs of similar style, but spelling different words, are frequently seen as parodies.
