What comes to mind when you imagine “a city in the sea”? Some kind of Atlantis that was lost centuries ago and only recently re-discovered? Well, I’m actually talking about aircraft carriers, and they really are like full-on cities floating out in the middle of the ocean! They even have actual mailing addresses! An aircraft carrier is built to function for about 50 years. - Thanks to international Freedom of Navigation laws, aircraft carriers are officially sovereign territories no matter where they find themselves in the ocean. - An aircraft carrier has a legit population, housing and employing anywhere from 5,000 to 6,000 people. They live on 7 decks stacked under each other and elevators take them to the main decks. - Around half of the jobs on an aircraft carrier are connected to actually flying, controlling, and maintaining the planes. - Helping a plane take off and land at an aircraft carrier at such a rate is one of the most difficult, dangerous, and loudest jobs in the world. One wrong move and you can easily get swept off into the sea. - Most carriers today run on nuclear power. That means they don’t need to refuel as often as they used to and can function for 20 to 25 years straight on one fill-up! - Crewmembers can even shop and make orders online, and those packages typically get delivered within 10 days. Unfortunately there are not that vibrant anymore today. Coral reefs have suffered from the rise of water temperature, rise in acidity, destructive fishing methods and severe storms caused by climate change." - Peter Schenider. "Rainbow Reef Relaxation" is a 3-hour long, sweeping yet majestic & vibrant underwater journey to the world's most beautiful lagoons, as captured by Nature Relaxation collaborator Peter Schneider (Underwatercam) paired with ambient underwater sounds and brand new ambient music by the Cynic Project. Filmed in High Definition several years ago, thanks to its age this film offers magical glimpses of an underwater world that is bursting with life, color, and beauty. Unfortunately, reefs today in most of the world are suffering from severe bleaching and so with this film we hope to raise awareness by showcasing the divine beauty that only pristine underwater reefs can present, in hopes that it will motivate the viewer to take action and help save them before its too late! (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/01/coral-bleaching-reefs-climate-change-el-nino-environment/) More from Peter S: "We all know that nowadays! This gives us the privilege and also duty to change and rethink our role in nature. What we also know today is that everything is connected and we are all a part of Nature, yes we are nature. So we don’t have to save the world, but recognize it as family. What we do to the world, the world will give it back to us. Equally the good and the bad things, that is law. The good news in it is, ...it is all up to you and me and everyone. You matter, I matter because we are all belonging to the same family. Now take a deep breath and join us for a dive beneath the waves." MUSIC INFORMATION: Filmed by The Cynic Project (http://www.CynicMusic.com) by Alex Smith. WATCH MY FILMS FREE ON AMAZON!! Before being an earthly paradise with enchanting colours, the lagoon of New-Caledonia is above all a paradise for sharks. Usually considered as fierce predators, sharks really are opportunistic scavengers. Scavengers that are not too picky when it comes to their menu: feathers, fins or fur, anything will do. Amongst the most striking scenes which punctuate this documentary filmed for four years in New Caledonia, is the never-seen-before sequence of the planet’s greatest animal, a weakened blue whale, attacked and cleaned up by hordes of sharks from the surface down to the abyss. High quality images and a dramatic backdrop soundtrack plunge us into the shark's world. Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD] The Deep sea creature refers to organisms that live below the photic zone of the ocean. These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bars of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above. These creatures live in very demanding environments, such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. The water is between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius and has low oxygen levels. Due to the depth, the pressure is between 20 and 1,000 bars. Creatures that live hundreds or even thousands of meters deep in the ocean have adapted to the high pressure, lack of light, and other factors. The depths of the ocean are festooned with the most nightmarish creatures imaginable. You might think you’re safe, because these critters live thousands of feet down in a cold dark abyss, but the vampire squid, which looks like a nightmare umbrella, and the frilled shark—a literal living fossil—will live on in the recesses of your mind long after you’ve clicked away. Enjoy these deep sea horrors and try to have a relaxing day afterward. ► NOTE : I'm a big fan of National Geographic and I just collect the best parts of National Geographic. I do not make money from National Geographic's Video. Thanks You very much

As a member of the deck crew, an Able-bodied Seaman (AB) has a varied role on board a ship, which is often physically demanding, and by its nature, all-weather. Able Seamen, as with any seafaring role, have to balance their family and work lives as they can be at sea for long periods of time. The flipside of those prolonged stretches at sea is lengthy leave periods, which makes seafaring a unique sector to work in. Am proud to be a Seafarer. In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. Amazing Underwater Marine Life Enjoy this relaxing underwater video from the philippines. Most of the time the ocean appears to be blue because this is the color our eyes see. But the ocean can be many other colors depending upon particles in the water, the depth of the water, and the amount of skylight. The colors we see depend upon the reflection of the visible wavelengths of light to our eyes. Wavelengths of light pass through matter differently depending on the material's composition. Blue wavelengths are transmitted to greater depths of the ocean, while red wavelengths are absorbed quickly. Water molecules scatter blue wavelengths by absorbing the light waves, and then rapidly reemitting the light waves in different directions. That is why there are mostly blue wavelengths that are reflected back to our eyes. Sometimes oceans look green. This may be because there is an abundance of plant life or sediment from rivers that flow into the ocean. The blue light is absorbed more and the yellow pigments from plants mix with the blue light waves to produce the color green. Sometimes parts of the oceans will look milky brown after a storm passes. This is because winds and currents associated with the storm churn up sand and sediment from the rivers that lead into the oceans. The ocean may also reflect the blue sky. However this is prominent only at relatively low angles and when the water is smooth. Apart from the blue ocean color the most interesting thing in the ocean are the marine animals living in this habitat. Also their color is without light that bright as we see it in underwater photographs or underwater DVD Videos. This film was filmed with dive lights mounted on a underwater video camera and shows spectacular colors of the ocean inhabitants the graceful marine creatures.

Daniel and I drove to Mendocino to catch some Abalone and Sea Urchins aka Uni. May not exactly be a catch and cook, but we can call it a catch and eat. This may be the last year to dive for Abalone until 2030 so the rumor goes. Their numbers have been decreasing a lot due to an increase in the number of Sea Urchins. Conceived in the open sea, tiny spaceship-shaped sea urchin larvae search the vast ocean to find a home. After this incredible odyssey, they undergo one of the most remarkable transformations in nature. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * Every summer, millions of people head to the coast to soak up the sun and play in the waves. But they aren’t alone. Just beyond the crashing surf, hundreds of millions of tiny sea urchin larvae are also floating around, preparing for one of the most dramatic transformations in the animal kingdom. Scientists along the Pacific coast are investigating how these microscopic ocean drifters, which look like tiny spaceships, find their way back home to the shoreline, where they attach themselves, grow into spiny creatures and live out a slow-moving life that often exceeds 100 years.“These sorts of studies are absolutely crucial if we want to not only maintain healthy fisheries but indeed a healthy ocean,” says Jason Hodin, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories. http://staff.washington.edu/hodin/ http://depts.washington.edu/fhl/ Sea urchins reproduce by sending clouds of eggs and sperm into the water. Millions of larvae are formed, but only a handful make it back to the shoreline to grow into adults. --- What are sea urchins? Sea urchins are spiny invertebrate animals. Adult sea urchins are globe-shaped and show five-point radial symmetry. They move using a system of tube feet. Sea urchins belong to the phylum Echinodermata along with their relatives the sea stars (starfish), sand dollars and sea slugs. --- What do sea urchins eat? Sea urchins eat algae and can reduce kelp forests to barrens if their numbers grow too high. A sea urchin’s mouth, referred to as Aristotle’s lantern, is on the underside and has five sharp teeth. The urchin uses the tube feet to move the food to its mouth. --- How do sea urchins reproduce? Male sea urchins release clouds of sperm and females release huge numbers of eggs directly into the ocean water. The gametes meet and the sperm fertilize the eggs. The fertilized eggs grow into free-swimming embryos which themselves develop into larvae called plutei. The plutei swim through the ocean as plankton until they drop to the seafloor and metamorphosize into the globe-shaped adult urchins. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/08/23/sea-urchins-pull-themselves-inside-out-to-be-reborn/ ---+ For more information: Marine Larvae Video Resource http://marinedevelopmentresource.stanford.edu/ ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: From Drifter to Dynamo: The Story of Plankton | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUvJ5ANH86I Pygmy Seahorses: Masters of Camouflage | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3CtGoqz3ww The Fantastic Fur of Sea Otters | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxqg_um1TXI ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! Episode 12 Sorry about uploading 2 videos on the same day but when you have wifi in the Caribbean, you have to take advantage of it! It takes about 8 hours per episode tho! This episode see us say goodbye to The Coopers in Sardinia and wait out a storm in the lovely Porto Cervo (it was so windy there were 80m super yachts with 200m of chain dragging anchor!) Hayley’s dream holiday location has always been Capri, an island closer to mainland Italy, so once the weather calmed down we set sail and headed east. This was our best sail yet without an engine on for over 24 hours. Please stay tuned for our next episode where we learn that not all the nicest places make the best anchorages… Follow us on social media to see what we’re up to right now. Hey there! Next time you complain that you don’t get enough sleep or sunshine, remember about submarine sailors. Oh, that's a real man's job! They see no sun for 90 days in a row and only get 6 hours of sleep in an 18-hour day! Let’s find out more about how things really go underwater. (Spoiler: you have to be a tough guy) 4:19 Haute cuisine for submariners 5:58 The Blue crew and the Gold crew 7:15 Why their day lasts 18 hours 7:50 Appreciate personal space? This job isn't for you 8:24 How long submariners are allowed to shower 8:50 How these guys entertain themselves 9:27 How much do submariners make? 10:37 SUMMARY: - Legend has it that the concept of a submarine was invented as early as 332 BCE. Alexander the Great supposedly submerged his soldiers into the sea in diving bells. - The Yankee sub in 1776 was named the Turtle, and it tried and failed to sink a British warship in New York Harbor. - The 3 major submarine powers in the world are the United States, China, and Russia, and the US Navy boasts the largest underwater fleet: over 70 submarines. - Most submarines have diesel-electric engines, the energy from which powers up huge batteries that drive an electric motor to move the propellers. - There’s GPS satellite navigation that works on the surface and a system of motion and rotation sensors under the water. - A submariner has to be psychologically stable and academically qualified — no country will want someone who is unbalanced dealing with its most expensive weapons. - A normal submarine shift lasts 90 days, but it can become longer in an unstable geopolitical environment. - The kitchen not only takes up plenty of space but also offers a huge variety of meals, especially during the first weeks of deployment when the food is still fresh. Submarine chefs make the crew happy with dishes from lobster to lasagna to delicious desserts. - A submarine normally has 2 fully staffed crews: the Blue crew and the Gold crew. - - While a regular day above the water lasts 24 hours, things are different under the sea. For submariners, life is split into 3 shifts of 6 hours, making their day 18 hours long. - Normally, a submarine has 2 showers for 130 crew members. They are allowed to shower for no longer than 3 to 5 minutes so everyone has a turn and to lessen the strain on the water filtration system. - There’s a recreation room with a plasma TV that serves as a movie theater and video game room. There are cards and board games to help the crew bond and entertain themselves. - Maybe the average annual salary of $100,000 plus health benefits makes up for at least some of the stress and pressure the crew goes through. How deep into the Earth can we go and still find life? Marine microbiologist Karen Lloyd introduces us to deep-subsurface microbes: tiny organisms that live buried meters deep in ocean mud and have been on Earth since way before animals. Learn more about these mysterious microbes, which refuse to grow in the lab and seem to have a fundamentally different relationship with time and energy than we do. The government of Gabon has teamed up with a militant conservation group called the Sea Shepherd, whose members are notorious for employing extreme tactics to thwart marine poaching.
