How to layer acrylic paint for a professional looking background for either still life art or portraits and on master artists like Vincent Van Gogh used often. This demonstration illustrates a simple and easy technique for achieving that effect This was one of our first videos I ever made (5 cameras ago) and I have left it up in spite of the shaky camera work because the information is so valuable to any acrylic artists. These background examples are painted with professional Matisse Structure acrylic paint. Burnt Umber, cad yellow medium, cad red medium, Burnt Sienna, white, and Dioxazine Purple. How to Rag Paint a Wall | Paint Techniques

03:29
Watch more How to Do Decorative Painting videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508619-How-to-Rag-Paint-a-Wall-Paint-Techniques So in our series of decorative painting techniques, now we come onto the technique called ragging, which, again, uses glaze, and a pan with a roller, plus your base color, which in this case is kind of camely color, and my glaze color is more of a caramel. So very carefully roll on the glaze, as evenly as you can. And when you're working on a wall, try and do two foot sections at a time, from the ceiling down to the floor, and work quickly, and if you're lucky enough, try and convince a friend to help you, so that one of is doing the rolling, and the other person is doing the ragging part of the technique. So there I've set up my glaze, and then I have some fabric, which is just 100 percent cotton. When you cut your fabric, try not to have little tails on it showing, or threads, because they can all be transferred to your glaze. And the technique largely depends on what kind of fabric you use. You could use tee shirt material, you could use velvet, a chamois, anything you want to use to get a particular effect. So the key is always, before you do anything on your wall, try and do a sample such as this, so that you know what you're going to get. So, this is possibly, maybe, a foot square, and I'm rolling it up, and here I am, again, manipulating the rag the whole time, making sure you don't get the same imprint over and over again. Try and keep it organic, and from time to time, just take the cloth, pull it apart, and roll it up again. So many people ask me if it's possible to do a two-layer ragging, and it certainly is, but you do have to allow the first layer to dry. And then I would always recommend that you actually use a sample and you do your first layer, then you choose your secondary glaze color. It could be the same color, which will add richness to your final finish, or you could choose a completely different color, but always try before you actually go onto your wall. And just to give you an example of how the base color and the glaze color can have such a dramatic impact, I have a a beautiful purple base coat, and over that, I've ragged on the golden glaze, so it gives a completely different feel to the technique.

Photoshop Tutorial: Airbrushed Film Poster Style Photo Effect

05:40
In today's Photoshop tutorial I'm going to show you a mix of filters and adjustments we can apply to a photograph to mimic the retro style airbrushed painted look associated with classic film posters. Imagine the poster art for original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones movies, and pretty much any action/adventure film from the 80s! They all feature incredibly life-like depictions of the the actors and characters, which are almost like photos, but they have a clear hand painted appearance with subtle brush strokes, outlining marks and quite high contrast with vibrant colours. Steampunk Assemblage Woman Project Tutorial by Stampington & Company

05:45
Life has been chaos recently. There are seasons in life and this latest season has been tough. There’s a million things going on and stress is everywhere. The gears and cogs perfectly symbolize the craziness of life going around in my head day and night. For this project, I was inspired by the simple phrase “Stay Strong” to remind myself that it will just be hard for a time and that things will even out eventually. Get all the supplies for this project at https://stampington.com/the-shoppe-at-somerset. Instructions: Cover the face of the Steampunk Cameo Woman Stand-Up with book text using gel medium. With a blending tool, ink the outside edges of the face with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Arrange metal gears, coins, shirt buttons, and other embellishments on the head. Adhere to the head with strong adhesive. Attach a few of the gears with brads so that they can turn still. Twist a length of rusted wire into a circle to accent parts of the head and adhere with strong adhesive. Attach rustic tin heart to the bottom corner of the woman. Add crisscrossed pen nibs below the heart. Ink edges of Tim Holtz Small Talk sticker with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and adhere over the heart.

Meguru Yamaguchi Japanese Abstract Artist | HYPEBEAST Impressions

03:47
One step inside Meguru Yamaguchi’s New York City studio in the Bronx and you are immediately immersed in a world of unruly brushstrokes. A howitzer of sketches, paintings and sculptures cram the Japanese artist’s creative space. Amidst the painterly chaos, there’s a beautiful (controlled) disorder to Yamaguchi’s unconventional artworks. Yamaguchi calls his signature technique “Cut & Paste.” The unique method involves splattering paints on plastic sheets, drying the paint and then placing the entire piece onto a three-dimensional surface which is pre-cut with a laser cutting machine. His montage of brushstrokes appears as if they are protruding from the surface. The artist was initially inspired by the works of the legendary post-impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gogh. He was exceptionally fond of Van Gogh’s “paintings with the accumulation of brushstrokes.” Furthermore, his unique artwork pays homage to the Japanese Gutai movement of the 1950’s. Founder of the movement, Kazuo Shiraga, was known to create artworks with his feet to elevate the possibilities of painting, gesture and form as a whole. Aside from traditional techniques, Yamaguchi stresses the importance of using digital mediums to create artworks. “I think it’s important to use the current technology as well as the old techniques. Since I was born in this generation, why not use the technology and make something that couldn’t have been done before?” Get a closer look at Meguru Yamaguchi‘s unique process above and follow him on Instagram to stay updated on new works.

Gerhard Richter Interview: In Art We Find Beauty and Comfort

09:48
“I don’t really believe art has power. But it does have value. Those who take an interest in it find solace in art. It gives them huge comfort.” Gerhard Richter, one of the greatest painters of our time, discusses beauty in the era of the Internet in this rare interview. “These days, beauty is not in fashion,” says Richter, who has explored painting and its role in image culture for decades on his quest for a form of painting that corresponds to contemporary challenges. Quoting German author Thomas Mann, who predicted a change in art, Richter says: “Art will shed all of its gravity and transform into something merry and democratic.” But art has, in Richter’s view, surpassed even that. “It’s now more than merry. There has never been so much art … We don’t need it. We need entertainment. Sensations.” Beauty, however, is not lost for the artist: “Beauty is an ideal of mine as much as it ever was … But beauty is being discredited when fashion and models are called beautiful.” Boasting a diverse catalogue of paintings, Richter has always been suspicious of staying with the same motive and painterly strategy: “It’s more interesting to be insecure. You should have a measure of uncertainty and perplexity.” The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art recently acquired one of Richter’s 10 metre stripe-paintings, supplementing it’s collection of works by, and long standing relationship with, a painter who is considered the most important of the post-war era. As an incessant voice in contemporary German painting for more than half a century, he has witnessed the development of his country since World War II and in this light his resume of the state of affairs of his native country seems uplifting: “Actually we have the same or similar problems as all other countries nowadays… we’re looking ahead.” Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1971-1994 and is the recipient of numerous prizes, among other the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997 and the 1998 Premium Imperial Prize. His paintings have been shown extensively, e.g. at the Tate Galleries, London, UK and at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA and his work is held in major collections around the world. Gerhardt Richter was interviewed by Anders Kold at his studio in Cologne, Germany, in September 2016. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Becoming an Artist | Art21 "Extended Play"

03:12
Episode #141: Filmed in his New York studio, artist Hiroshi Sugimoto recounts his student days studying Western philosophy (Hegel, Kant, Marx) in Tokyo, encountering Oriental philosophy (such as Zen Buddhism) in California, and his interest in the history of Modernism—all schools of thought that demonstrate "the human ability to see things in a different way." Central to Hiroshi Sugimoto's work is the idea that photography is a time machine, a method of preserving and picturing memory and time. Sugimoto sees with the eye of the sculptor, painter, architect, and philosopher. He creates images that seem to convey his subjects' essence, whether architectural, sculptural, painterly, or of the natural world. Bill Henson - Twilight Zones - Photography

02:18
Bill Henson (born 7 October 1955) is an Australian contemporary art photographer....a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs are painterly tableaux that continue the traditions of romantic literature and painting. The use of chiaroscuro is common throughout his works, through underexposure and adjustment in printing. His photographs' use of bokeh is intended to give them a painterly atmosphere. The work is often presented as diptychs, triptychs and in other groupings, and the exhibitions are specifically curated by Henson to reflect a sense of musicality. Duality is a recurring theme of Henson's work, often in combination with adolescent subjects. He frequently employs a flattened perspective through the use of telephoto lenses. His works are often in the form of staged tableaux in which faces of the subjects are often blurred or partly shadowed and do not directly face the viewer. Fiber Artists Create With An Overlooked Medium

03:08
Craft becomes fine art in the hands of three local artists - Nicki Strouss, Esther Hall, and Megan A. Coyan. Each woman, working in her own tradition of paper, embroidery or textile design, creates fiber art that stretches beyond the boundaries of surface design and utility. The constraints of the medium force the artists into spontaneity, often yielding thoughtful yet exciting pieces of art. The artists' show Tendrils: A Delicate Twist will be on display throughout October at the Ohio Art League Gallery at 1552 N. High Street. For more information go to www.oal.org.

Manjunath Kamath: Slide & Video Presentation - Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi

01:42:27
Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi organised an event by the acclaimed artist Manjunath Kamath, with video installations and a power point presentation of his lifetime work on 24th August 2012 at 5.30 pm, at the Government Museum & Art Gallery, Sector 10 C, Chandigarh. Manjunath Kamath was Born in Mangalore, India in 1972. He did his BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore; He was the Artist in Residence, School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, UK. Followed by a Charles Wallace Scholarship, UK. He has exhibited his work extensively, in solo and group shows in India and abroad. Manjunath Kamath compels the viewer to think and participate in his thought-provoking works. His imaginations bring forth different experiments, which he shares with the viewer. His need to draw and hold his viewers' attention is palpable in his varied use of painting, drawing, sculpture, video and found objects. With the help of these disparate genres he creates narratives that are gripping in content, even though they are composed of simple, commonplace elements. Thus Kamath's forte ultimately lies in creating fantasies out of the ordinary. In an age when video art and installations have given a new language to Indian contemporary art, an innovative approach has pervaded the art scene, and artists such as Manjunath Kamath, use art as a vehicle to address identity issues like gender, sexuality and feminism. Through his penchant for fantasy and the absurd he is able to convey his thoughts and ideas in a manner not seen in Indian art before. The narrative is packed with details which provide important clues to the social satire, the wit and the clever ridicule infused in the infinite oddities of human situations. Manjunath Kamath tells stories with his images. His narratives, however, are altered and adjusted constantly, adapting fluidly according to the environment they are narrated in, and resulting in a different meaning each time a story is told. As a visual artist, Kamath feels impelled to regularly reinvent his method of storytelling. By relentlessly working on his articulation and modernizing his techniques, he continuously updates his visual vocabulary. Manjunath himself explains about his thought process and technique - "My works are inspired by the day to day life spend by any individual who is observant of things going around. I am a capturer of the immediate in painterly images. Taking cues from the conversations with friends, relatives, street smart guys, fashion aficionados, art lovers, story tellers, children, myth makers, journalists, art critics and so on, I try to go beyond the face value of the words uttered and the mental images created. I look at the possibilities of the unsaid and chances of the unrevealed in my works. So they are always mysterious and playful..... My world view is quite humorous. I would like to laugh at things and through this laughter I could get into the unrevealed sides of events. This is the same attitude that I take in my video works. I create imaginary situations as in the fables and parables, through claymation models. They create one kind of narrative and leave it open for the viewers interventions. This is the same method that I use in my small scale works and drawings." Uma Prakash writes about his work --" Kamath's unique visual vocabulary reflects his mastery of colour, his techniques and his usage of various mediums. He connects the past with the present in his thought provoking work, showing the deep link between tradition and modernism. With his artistic expertise Kamath addresses issues of identity, race and social structure allowing the viewer to participate in his work." www.lalitkalachandigarh.com
Video painting with spatio-temporal-varying style parameters

03:27
Artists use different means of stylization to control the focus on different objects in the scene. This allows them to portray complex meaning and achieve certain artistic effects. Most prior work on painterly rendering of videos, however, uses only a single painting style, with fixed global parameters, irrespective of objects and their layout in the images. This often leads to inadequate artistic control. Moreover, brush stroke orientation is typically assumed to follow an everywhere continuous directional field. In this article, we propose a video painting system that accounts for the spatial support of objects in the images or video, and uses this information to specify style parameters and stroke orientation for painterly rendering. Since objects occupy distinct image locations and move relatively smoothly from one video frame to another, our object-based painterly rendering approach is characterized by style parameters that coherently vary in space and time. Spatiotemporal coherence of varying style parameters enables more artistic freedom, such as emphasis/deemphasis, increase or decrease of contrast, exaggeration or abstraction of different objects in the scene in a temporally coherent fashion. Mizuki Kagaya, William Brendel, Qingqing Deng, Todd Kesterson, Sinisa Todorovic, Patrick Neill, and Eugene Zhang, "Video Painting with Space-Time-Varying Style Paramters", IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Vol. 17(1), 2011, pp. 74-87.

Glenn Barr / THH70 / Joey Seeman Gallery Art Show - The 4th Wall Gallery - Jan. 14, 2010

04:37
The 4th Wall Gallery in Dallas, Texas is pleased to announce the January 14, 2010 opening of a solo show by Glenn Barr, with additional works by THH70. Both artists will be in attendance at the opening which will run from 7 - 10pm. The show's run will conclude on February 10, 2010. Additional artwork exhibited by Joey Seeman. Glenn Barr's robots, creatures, and vixens live in a seedy yet swinging 1960's universe, drenched in the haze of a post industrial hangover. Barr has used elements of pop culture to infuse familiarity to an otherwise parallel reality, where angels and devils alike share the same urban playground. With a nod to pulp art and cartooning, Barr's paintings are mesmerizing in both their simplicity and depth. Glenn Barr is one of Detroit's most celebrated and successful underground artist. His paintings have appeared in galleries from Seattle to New York City. Worlds converge in Barr's soulfully voyeuristic and subliminally strange imagery as his scintillating visions transpire in scenes taken from subversive underworlds and apocalyptic horizons. The interiors are adorned with desembodied cherubs, morally bankrupt vixens from the darker realm of the spiritual world. Along side these kinky inner sanctums, Barr presents views of the unban landscape as a post-industrial world that could never be or perhaps as a vision of the post nuclear future soon to come. Be it femme fatales or otherworldly scenarios his visuals just might prove him to be this generation's ultimate erotic/ surrealist painter! THH70 was born in human form in 1970 in Los Angeles, California, but the persona of his nom de guerre was conceived in 1994 as a stage name for his other career as a recording artist. He is now an accomplished visual artist, with his works in private and corporate collections on every continent. Since 2000, he has sold over 1300 original mixed media pieces, and his website - thh70online.com - continues to receive thousands of hits per month. To date, THH70 has shown in solo and group shows in galleries and museums across the United States and the Caribbean, and has appeared in print and online publications worldwide. THH70 is recognized for his unique artistic approach that he has branded Lo-Fi Urban Contemporary", combining crude painterly techniques and utilizing materials and media (that include everything from acrylics and spray paint to household products like Windex and X-14 mildew remover) with his own style of raw illustration and stream-of-consciousness linguistics. This show marks THH70's first major gallery appearance in Dallas. Joseph Seemans work has been published in magazines such as Art Alternatives, Juxtapoz, Attaché (United Airlines in-flight magazine), Miami New Times, Dallas Observer, Ocean Drive, South Florida, Tattoo Savage, Vogue and Spin. His work was commissioned for fashion designer Anna Suis 1995 line. As part of the burgeoning South Beach art scene of the early 90s, Seeman collaborated with artist Tomata Du Plenty (former lead singer of seminal L.A. punk band The Screamers) and together they organized and exhibited in numerous shows. In 1994 Seeman was chosen to participate in North Miamis Museum of Contemporary Arts Monster Show. In early 1996, Seeman moved to Dallas, Texas from his native Miami and earned a degree in Computer Animation from the Art Institute of Dallas. Seeman has participated in many group shows in the Dallas and Ft. Worth areas as well as a solo and group show in Los Angeles. Behind the set: Delpozo's fairytale forest fantasy in Wallpaper.

01:32
Read more at http://www.wallpaper.com/fashion/behind-the-set-delpozos-fairytale-forest-fantasy/8472#gFzVdv2OBTPxKOKE.99 Under Josep Font's creative direction, the Spanish fashion house recreated a modern day winter wonderland within New York’s IAC building for its A/W 2015 collection. Natural sunlight permeated the venue, reenacting a fantastical forest mise-en-scène for a show rich in both history and colour. An all white backdrop of densely packed 2-4 metre high trees, which encircled the models as they sashayed down the catwalk, was the perfect contrast to the vibrant colour palette of the pre-Raphaelite spirited collection. The straight cut, simplistic 60-strong tree installation, produced by AO, was both statuesque and transparent, acting as a blank canvas for a show that possessed a painterly quality lending to the18th century artwork of Russian painter Andrey Remnev, and the animated, yet sinister imaginings of Australian artist Rhys Lee.

Conceptual Photographer DEAN WEST

02:45
Australian-born, Brooklyn-based photographer Dean West is best known for his highly staged, saturated photographs that are as cinematic as they are painterly. Drawing inspiration from a Hockney-esque, hyper-stylised Hollywood aesthetic, West meticulously recreates his photographs from memory, a lengthy process which can take up to a year per image. “To recreate the scene of the girl on the balcony (‘St. Pete Beach, 2016’), that was like seven days of driving to find the one space that felt as close to that memory as possible,” said West in a recent interview.
