How to Rag Paint a Wall | Paint Techniques
Watch more How to Do Decorative Painting videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508619-How-to-Rag-Paint-a-Wall-Paint-Techniques So in our series of decorative painting techniques, now we come onto the technique called ragging, which, again, uses glaze, and a pan with a roller, plus your base color, which in this case is kind of camely color, and my glaze color is more of a caramel. So very carefully roll on the glaze, as evenly as you can. And when you're working on a wall, try and do two foot sections at a time, from the ceiling down to the floor, and work quickly, and if you're lucky enough, try and convince a friend to help you, so that one of is doing the rolling, and the other person is doing the ragging part of the technique. So there I've set up my glaze, and then I have some fabric, which is just 100 percent cotton. When you cut your fabric, try not to have little tails on it showing, or threads, because they can all be transferred to your glaze. And the technique largely depends on what kind of fabric you use. You could use tee shirt material, you could use velvet, a chamois, anything you want to use to get a particular effect. So the key is always, before you do anything on your wall, try and do a sample such as this, so that you know what you're going to get. So, this is possibly, maybe, a foot square, and I'm rolling it up, and here I am, again, manipulating the rag the whole time, making sure you don't get the same imprint over and over again. Try and keep it organic, and from time to time, just take the cloth, pull it apart, and roll it up again. So many people ask me if it's possible to do a two-layer ragging, and it certainly is, but you do have to allow the first layer to dry. And then I would always recommend that you actually use a sample and you do your first layer, then you choose your secondary glaze color. It could be the same color, which will add richness to your final finish, or you could choose a completely different color, but always try before you actually go onto your wall. And just to give you an example of how the base color and the glaze color can have such a dramatic impact, I have a a beautiful purple base coat, and over that, I've ragged on the golden glaze, so it gives a completely different feel to the technique.

Photoshop Tutorial: Airbrushed Film Poster Style Photo Effect
In today's Photoshop tutorial I'm going to show you a mix of filters and adjustments we can apply to a photograph to mimic the retro style airbrushed painted look associated with classic film posters. Imagine the poster art for original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones movies, and pretty much any action/adventure film from the 80s! They all feature incredibly life-like depictions of the the actors and characters, which are almost like photos, but they have a clear hand painted appearance with subtle brush strokes, outlining marks and quite high contrast with vibrant colours. Bill Henson - Twilight Zones - Photography
Bill Henson (born 7 October 1955) is an Australian contemporary art photographer....a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs are painterly tableaux that continue the traditions of romantic literature and painting. The use of chiaroscuro is common throughout his works, through underexposure and adjustment in printing. His photographs' use of bokeh is intended to give them a painterly atmosphere. The work is often presented as diptychs, triptychs and in other groupings, and the exhibitions are specifically curated by Henson to reflect a sense of musicality. Duality is a recurring theme of Henson's work, often in combination with adolescent subjects. He frequently employs a flattened perspective through the use of telephoto lenses. His works are often in the form of staged tableaux in which faces of the subjects are often blurred or partly shadowed and do not directly face the viewer. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Becoming an Artist | Art21 "Extended Play"
Episode #141: Filmed in his New York studio, artist Hiroshi Sugimoto recounts his student days studying Western philosophy (Hegel, Kant, Marx) in Tokyo, encountering Oriental philosophy (such as Zen Buddhism) in California, and his interest in the history of Modernism—all schools of thought that demonstrate "the human ability to see things in a different way." Central to Hiroshi Sugimoto's work is the idea that photography is a time machine, a method of preserving and picturing memory and time. Sugimoto sees with the eye of the sculptor, painter, architect, and philosopher. He creates images that seem to convey his subjects' essence, whether architectural, sculptural, painterly, or of the natural world. Cecily Brown “Rehearsal” at THE DRAWING CENTER
James Kalm visits the Drawing Center, one of SoHo’s stalwart institutions, to bring viewers glimpses of this, the first museum show of the work of Cecily Brown. “Rehearsal” presents about eighty drawings and sketchbooks with additional large format mixed media pieces that extend the idea of work on paper to the brink of traditional painting. As a prolific drafts-person, Brown is an image magpie, collecting and reusing subjects and influences form Hieronymus Bosch, and Pieter Bruege, William Hogarth to Edgar Degas, all are master draftsmen, and added to the mélange. These images are then infused into a loose mix of Abstract Expressionist brushwork and gesture to create a unique take which never quite coalesces into a coherent example of ether contemporary figuration or painterly abstraction. This program was recorded on October 7, and October 13, 2016 in SoHo.

Gerhard Richter Interview: In Art We Find Beauty and Comfort
“I don’t really believe art has power. But it does have value. Those who take an interest in it find solace in art. It gives them huge comfort.” Gerhard Richter, one of the greatest painters of our time, discusses beauty in the era of the Internet in this rare interview. “These days, beauty is not in fashion,” says Richter, who has explored painting and its role in image culture for decades on his quest for a form of painting that corresponds to contemporary challenges. Quoting German author Thomas Mann, who predicted a change in art, Richter says: “Art will shed all of its gravity and transform into something merry and democratic.” But art has, in Richter’s view, surpassed even that. “It’s now more than merry. There has never been so much art … We don’t need it. We need entertainment. Sensations.” Beauty, however, is not lost for the artist: “Beauty is an ideal of mine as much as it ever was … But beauty is being discredited when fashion and models are called beautiful.” Boasting a diverse catalogue of paintings, Richter has always been suspicious of staying with the same motive and painterly strategy: “It’s more interesting to be insecure. You should have a measure of uncertainty and perplexity.” The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art recently acquired one of Richter’s 10 metre stripe-paintings, supplementing it’s collection of works by, and long standing relationship with, a painter who is considered the most important of the post-war era. As an incessant voice in contemporary German painting for more than half a century, he has witnessed the development of his country since World War II and in this light his resume of the state of affairs of his native country seems uplifting: “Actually we have the same or similar problems as all other countries nowadays… we’re looking ahead.” Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1971-1994 and is the recipient of numerous prizes, among other the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997 and the 1998 Premium Imperial Prize. His paintings have been shown extensively, e.g. at the Tate Galleries, London, UK and at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA and his work is held in major collections around the world. Gerhardt Richter was interviewed by Anders Kold at his studio in Cologne, Germany, in September 2016. Rembrandt style artistic portrait photography - light and colour photoshop tips
Rembrandt style artistic portrait photography - light and colour tips free texture download here http://academy-of-photography.com/rembrandt-lighting-technique-old-painting-vintage-style-effect/ I have been fascinated about this ole vintage look for a portrait. I have seen many professional photography competitions in my past and I have noticed that fact that making a portrait looking old in Rembrandt style is appreciated. This is not copying blindly the famous painter, it is just borrowing few visual language elements. A good lesson for any artist photographer is to study art history and try to understand various approaches to beauty. I believe using elements of visual art from one domain to other can be successful, especially we are talking here about painting and photography as 2 different self standing artistic field. I have noticed that the old vintage look can be easily achieved in post production either in Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom, where playing with the colour balance, white balance, contrast, exposure and few other basic controls is very easy. Also adding a bit of old dried paint texture can be done with photo shop by adding a soft light blending layer on top which borrows a specific texture , and blends it into an image. Please follow the video above for the detail how to do the photo shop post editing part. Another aspect one needs to consider is also the Rembrandt lighting, as if the direction of light is not good, there is nothing you can do in post production. As a photographer I always ensure that the result form the camera is already an end result and I never rely of the post processing and editing step, as if the pictures is staffed up what happens after is useless. The Rembrandt lighting set up means one soft light at 45 degrees to one side of the model and above. The face is half lit and there is the light triangle cast by the nose to the shadowed cheek.

Meguru Yamaguchi Japanese Abstract Artist | HYPEBEAST Impressions
One step inside Meguru Yamaguchi’s New York City studio in the Bronx and you are immediately immersed in a world of unruly brushstrokes. A howitzer of sketches, paintings and sculptures cram the Japanese artist’s creative space. Amidst the painterly chaos, there’s a beautiful (controlled) disorder to Yamaguchi’s unconventional artworks. Yamaguchi calls his signature technique “Cut & Paste.” The unique method involves splattering paints on plastic sheets, drying the paint and then placing the entire piece onto a three-dimensional surface which is pre-cut with a laser cutting machine. His montage of brushstrokes appears as if they are protruding from the surface. The artist was initially inspired by the works of the legendary post-impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gogh. He was exceptionally fond of Van Gogh’s “paintings with the accumulation of brushstrokes.” Furthermore, his unique artwork pays homage to the Japanese Gutai movement of the 1950’s. Founder of the movement, Kazuo Shiraga, was known to create artworks with his feet to elevate the possibilities of painting, gesture and form as a whole. Aside from traditional techniques, Yamaguchi stresses the importance of using digital mediums to create artworks. “I think it’s important to use the current technology as well as the old techniques. Since I was born in this generation, why not use the technology and make something that couldn’t have been done before?” Get a closer look at Meguru Yamaguchi‘s unique process above and follow him on Instagram to stay updated on new works.

Video painting with spatio-temporal-varying style parameters
Artists use different means of stylization to control the focus on different objects in the scene. This allows them to portray complex meaning and achieve certain artistic effects. Most prior work on painterly rendering of videos, however, uses only a single painting style, with fixed global parameters, irrespective of objects and their layout in the images. This often leads to inadequate artistic control. Moreover, brush stroke orientation is typically assumed to follow an everywhere continuous directional field. In this article, we propose a video painting system that accounts for the spatial support of objects in the images or video, and uses this information to specify style parameters and stroke orientation for painterly rendering. Since objects occupy distinct image locations and move relatively smoothly from one video frame to another, our object-based painterly rendering approach is characterized by style parameters that coherently vary in space and time. Spatiotemporal coherence of varying style parameters enables more artistic freedom, such as emphasis/deemphasis, increase or decrease of contrast, exaggeration or abstraction of different objects in the scene in a temporally coherent fashion. Mizuki Kagaya, William Brendel, Qingqing Deng, Todd Kesterson, Sinisa Todorovic, Patrick Neill, and Eugene Zhang, "Video Painting with Space-Time-Varying Style Paramters", IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Vol. 17(1), 2011, pp. 74-87.

Sticker Art Timelapse: The Mean Green!
I recently made a handful of stickers and managed to put together a speed art video for one of them. The other stickers I made are up on my instagram page if you guys want to check those out too. It was a lot of fun making these stickers because they were more or less loosely scribbled in a painterly fashion. Sometimes its nice to freely color without being overly concerned about line quality. It was also nice to take a step back from all the digital art I've been working on lately and just have some fun with traditional sticker drawing. I chose to use sharpies instead of my prismas / copic markers because I wanted to have a "care-free" mindset while coloring. Generally I don't care if I waste sharpie ink so it allowed me to loosen up and just have fun making stickers. Also, sharpies have much less colors to choose from so I spent less time picking colors and more time just drawing. For me, its important to change things up, and these were a blast to make! I hope you guys enjoy the video! Feel free to drop any comments, questions or feedback below and let me know what you think. As always, please Like, Share and Subscribe! Fiber Artists Create With An Overlooked Medium
Craft becomes fine art in the hands of three local artists - Nicki Strouss, Esther Hall, and Megan A. Coyan. Each woman, working in her own tradition of paper, embroidery or textile design, creates fiber art that stretches beyond the boundaries of surface design and utility. The constraints of the medium force the artists into spontaneity, often yielding thoughtful yet exciting pieces of art. The artists' show Tendrils: A Delicate Twist will be on display throughout October at the Ohio Art League Gallery at 1552 N. High Street. For more information go to www.oal.org.

Episode #135: Filmed in his New York studio, artist Hiroshi Sugimoto gives a tour of his private cabinet of curiosities which includes meteorites, stone age tools, and whimsical toys. Central to Hiroshi Sugimoto's work is the idea that photography is a time machine, a method of preserving and picturing memory and time. Sugimoto sees with the eye of the sculptor, painter, architect, and philosopher. He creates images that seem to convey his subjects' essence, whether architectural, sculptural, painterly, or of the natural world. Knox Martin Women Black and White at WOODWARD GALLERY
When James Kalm moved from Idaho to New York in the late seventies, it was to study with Knox Martin at the Art Students League. In the thirty-something years since then, Martin has continued his industrious production of paintings. Never one to bow to fashion, this body of work is the culmination of over twenty years of work and, as Knox says, each picture has twenty to thirty paintings underneath. With a cult following among art aficionados Martin is truly a New York treasure, and the "Women: Black and White" pieces are gems of invention and painterly skill.

Steampunk Assemblage Woman Project Tutorial by Stampington & Company
Life has been chaos recently. There are seasons in life and this latest season has been tough. There’s a million things going on and stress is everywhere. The gears and cogs perfectly symbolize the craziness of life going around in my head day and night. For this project, I was inspired by the simple phrase “Stay Strong” to remind myself that it will just be hard for a time and that things will even out eventually. Get all the supplies for this project at https://stampington.com/the-shoppe-at-somerset. Instructions: Cover the face of the Steampunk Cameo Woman Stand-Up with book text using gel medium. With a blending tool, ink the outside edges of the face with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Arrange metal gears, coins, shirt buttons, and other embellishments on the head. Adhere to the head with strong adhesive. Attach a few of the gears with brads so that they can turn still. Twist a length of rusted wire into a circle to accent parts of the head and adhere with strong adhesive. Attach rustic tin heart to the bottom corner of the woman. Add crisscrossed pen nibs below the heart. Ink edges of Tim Holtz Small Talk sticker with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and adhere over the heart.

Conceptual Photographer DEAN WEST
Australian-born, Brooklyn-based photographer Dean West is best known for his highly staged, saturated photographs that are as cinematic as they are painterly. Drawing inspiration from a Hockney-esque, hyper-stylised Hollywood aesthetic, West meticulously recreates his photographs from memory, a lengthy process which can take up to a year per image. “To recreate the scene of the girl on the balcony (‘St. Pete Beach, 2016’), that was like seven days of driving to find the one space that felt as close to that memory as possible,” said West in a recent interview.
