Photoshop Tutorial: Airbrushed Film Poster Style Photo Effect
In today's Photoshop tutorial I'm going to show you a mix of filters and adjustments we can apply to a photograph to mimic the retro style airbrushed painted look associated with classic film posters. Imagine the poster art for original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones movies, and pretty much any action/adventure film from the 80s! They all feature incredibly life-like depictions of the actors and characters, which are almost like photos, but they have a clear hand painted appearance with subtle brush strokes, outlining marks and quite high contrast with vibrant colours. 📦 Join my mailing list and get a FREE design resources bundle! https://spoon.graphics/freebundle ⭐️ Get 10% off your Squarespace website: http://squarespace.com/spooner ► Western Cowboy Photo from Shutterstock - http://spoon.graphics/2l0WBmi ► Old Paper Texture from Pexels - http://spoon.graphics/2l122Sc #Photoshop #PhotoshopTutorial #AdobePhotoshop Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Illustrator design tutorials from Chris Spooner of Spoon Graphics. Rembrandt style artistic portrait photography - light and colour photoshop tips
Rembrandt style artistic portrait photography - light and colour tips free texture download here http://academy-of-photography.com/rembrandt-lighting-technique-old-painting-vintage-style-effect/ I have been fascinated about this ole vintage look for a portrait. I have seen many professional photography competitions in my past and I have noticed that fact that making a portrait looking old in Rembrandt style is appreciated. This is not copying blindly the famous painter, it is just borrowing few visual language elements. A good lesson for any artist photographer is to study art history and try to understand various approaches to beauty. I believe using elements of visual art from one domain to other can be successful, especially we are talking here about painting and photography as 2 different self standing artistic field. I have noticed that the old vintage look can be easily achieved in post production either in Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom, where playing with the colour balance, white balance, contrast, exposure and few other basic controls is very easy. Also adding a bit of old dried paint texture can be done with photo shop by adding a soft light blending layer on top which borrows a specific texture , and blends it into an image. Please follow the video above for the detail how to do the photo shop post editing part. Another aspect one needs to consider is also the Rembrandt lighting, as if the direction of light is not good, there is nothing you can do in post production. As a photographer I always ensure that the result form the camera is already an end result and I never rely of the post processing and editing step, as if the pictures is staffed up what happens after is useless. The Rembrandt lighting set up means one soft light at 45 degrees to one side of the model and above. The face is half lit and there is the light triangle cast by the nose to the shadowed cheek.

Marlene Dumas: The Image as Burden
In this video we see Marlene Dumas preparing for the retrospective exhibition Marlene Dumas – The Image as Burden at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. With almost two hundred drawings and paintings from private and museum collections throughout the world, Marlene Dumas – The Image as Burden is the first major solo exhibition of Dumas in the Netherlands in 20 years. It is the most comprehensive retrospective survey of her work in Europe to date and presents a compelling overview of her oeuvre from the late 1970s to the present. In addition to her most important and iconic works, the exhibition also presents lesser-known paintings and drawings, including many works never before seen in the Netherlands, and a selection of her most recent paintings. The title of the exhibition is derived from the work The Image as Burden (1993), which refers to the conflict between the painterly gesture and the illusion of the painted image. The Stedelijk presentation features a number of exclusive highlights, such as a gallery devoted to drawings that have come straight from her studio, which have rarely – if ever – been on public view, and the 100-piece series Models from the collection of the Van Abbemuseum. The survey at the Stedelijk also places greater emphasis on the works produced between 1976 and 1982, when Dumas’s career in Amsterdam began. After many years, the key work in her oeuvre, Love vs Death (1980), which opens the exhibition, is once again on display. Also included are a selection of Dumas’s most recent paintings, such as The Widow and Nuclear Family, both from 2013, and a number of watercolor drawings from the series Great Men (2014), the remainder of which is currently on view at Manifesta in St. Petersburg. The exhibition closely examines the key themes and motifs that Dumas has developed throughout her artistic career. Special attention is devoted to the works on paper that Dumas produced in the early years after her arrival in the Netherlands, when she also exhibited her work for the first time at the Stedelijk Museum and Museum Fodor (1978-81). Themes such as love, death and longing, and the use of texts and images found in the mass media – which are also explored in her late paintings – are evident in these early works, too. ABOUT MARLENE DUMAS Marlene Dumas is considered one of the most significant and influential painters working today. With her work, she gives new content to the meaning that painting can still have today, in an era dominated by visual culture. Her intense, emotionally charged paintings and drawings address existentialist themes and often reference art historical motifs and current political issues. Dumas often finds inspiration in newspaper and magazine images from her immense visual archive. The artist believes that the endless stream of photographic images that bombards us every day influences how we see each other and the world around us. Dumas addresses this onslaught by revealing the psychological, social, and political aspects of these images. Her drawings and paintings have an enormous directness and expressiveness, which the artist couples with a certain analytical distance. Dumas does not shy away from controversial topics. In both her visual work and her writings, Dumas reflects on contemporary painting and what it means to be an artist. Marlene Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa. She came to the Netherlands in the ‘70s to study at Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem. On completing her study, Dumas settled in Amsterdam, where she still lives and works. In recent years, Dumas has held important exhibitions in the United States (New York, Houston and Los Angeles), South Africa, Germany and Japan, and elsewhere. Her work is represented in the collections of numerous distinguished museums and private collectors throughout the world. Dumas is the recipient of many prestigious art awards, the most recent being the Johannes Vermeer Prize (2012). Credits Art direction: Sandra Parry and Rudolf Evenhuis Camera: Martin Mulder and Rudolf Evenhuis Editing: Caroline Baan Special Thanks to: Marlene Dumas, Leontine Coelewij, Rixt Hulshoff Pol

Video painting with spatio-temporal-varying style parameters
Artists use different means of stylization to control the focus on different objects in the scene. This allows them to portray complex meaning and achieve certain artistic effects. Most prior work on painterly rendering of videos, however, uses only a single painting style, with fixed global parameters, irrespective of objects and their layout in the images. This often leads to inadequate artistic control. Moreover, brush stroke orientation is typically assumed to follow an everywhere continuous directional field. In this article, we propose a video painting system that accounts for the spatial support of objects in the images or video, and uses this information to specify style parameters and stroke orientation for painterly rendering. Since objects occupy distinct image locations and move relatively smoothly from one video frame to another, our object-based painterly rendering approach is characterized by style parameters that coherently vary in space and time. Spatiotemporal coherence of varying style parameters enables more artistic freedom, such as emphasis/deemphasis, increase or decrease of contrast, exaggeration or abstraction of different objects in the scene in a temporally coherent fashion. Gerhard Richter Interview: In Art We Find Beauty and Comfort
“I don’t really believe art has power. But it does have value. Those who take an interest in it find solace in art. It gives them huge comfort.” Gerhard Richter, one of the greatest painters of our time, discusses beauty in the era of the Internet in this rare interview. “These days, beauty is not in fashion,” says Richter, who has explored painting and its role in image culture for decades on his quest for a form of painting that corresponds to contemporary challenges. Quoting German author Thomas Mann, who predicted a change in art, Richter says: “Art will shed all of its gravity and transform into something merry and democratic.” But art has, in Richter’s view, surpassed even that. “It’s now more than merry. There has never been so much art … We don’t need it. We need entertainment. Sensations.” Beauty, however, is not lost for the artist: “Beauty is an ideal of mine as much as it ever was … But beauty is being discredited when fashion and models are called beautiful.” Boasting a diverse catalogue of paintings, Richter has always been suspicious of staying with the same motive and painterly strategy: “It’s more interesting to be insecure. You should have a measure of uncertainty and perplexity.” The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art recently acquired one of Richter’s 10 metre stripe-paintings, supplementing it’s collection of works by, and long standing relationship with, a painter who is considered the most important of the post-war era. As an incessant voice in contemporary German painting for more than half a century, he has witnessed the development of his country since World War II and in this light his resume of the state of affairs of his native country seems uplifting: “Actually we have the same or similar problems as all other countries nowadays… we’re looking ahead.” Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1971-1994 and is the recipient of numerous prizes, among other the Golden Lion at the 47th Venice Biennale in 1997 and the 1998 Premium Imperial Prize. His paintings have been shown extensively, e.g. at the Tate Galleries, London, UK and at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA and his work is held in major collections around the world. Gerhardt Richter was interviewed by Anders Kold at his studio in Cologne, Germany, in September 2016. Knox Martin Women Black and White at WOODWARD GALLERY
When James Kalm moved from Idaho to New York in the late seventies, it was to study with Knox Martin at the Art Students League. In the thirty-something years since then, Martin has continued his industrious production of paintings. Never one to bow to fashion, this body of work is the culmination of over twenty years of work and, as Knox says, each picture has twenty to thirty paintings underneath. With a cult following among art aficionados Martin is truly a New York treasure, and the "Women: Black and White" pieces are gems of invention and painterly skill.

Hiroshi Sugimoto: Becoming an Artist | Art21 "Extended Play"
Episode #141: Filmed in his New York studio, artist Hiroshi Sugimoto recounts his student days studying Western philosophy (Hegel, Kant, Marx) in Tokyo, encountering Oriental philosophy (such as Zen Buddhism) in California, and his interest in the history of Modernism—all schools of thought that demonstrate "the human ability to see things in a different way." Central to Hiroshi Sugimoto's work is the idea that photography is a time machine, a method of preserving and picturing memory and time. Sugimoto sees with the eye of the sculptor, painter, architect, and philosopher. He creates images that seem to convey his subjects' essence, whether architectural, sculptural, painterly, or of the natural world. Meguru Yamaguchi Japanese Abstract Artist | HYPEBEAST Impressions
One step inside Meguru Yamaguchi’s New York City studio in the Bronx and you are immediately immersed in a world of unruly brushstrokes. A howitzer of sketches, paintings and sculptures cram the Japanese artist’s creative space. Amidst the painterly chaos, there’s a beautiful (controlled) disorder to Yamaguchi’s unconventional artworks. Yamaguchi calls his signature technique “Cut & Paste.” The unique method involves splattering paints on plastic sheets, drying the paint and then placing the entire piece onto a three-dimensional surface which is pre-cut with a laser cutting machine. His montage of brushstrokes appears as if they are protruding from the surface. The artist was initially inspired by the works of the legendary post-impressionist artist, Vincent Van Gogh. He was exceptionally fond of Van Gogh’s “paintings with the accumulation of brushstrokes.” Furthermore, his unique artwork pays homage to the Japanese Gutai movement of the 1950’s. Founder of the movement, Kazuo Shiraga, was known to create artworks with his feet to elevate the possibilities of painting, gesture and form as a whole. Aside from traditional techniques, Yamaguchi stresses the importance of using digital mediums to create artworks. “I think it’s important to use the current technology as well as the old techniques. Since I was born in this generation, why not use the technology and make something that couldn’t have been done before?” Get a closer look at Meguru Yamaguchi‘s unique process above and follow him on Instagram to stay updated on new works.

Bill Henson - Twilight Zones - Photography
Bill Henson (born 7 October 1955) is an Australian contemporary art photographer....a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs are painterly tableaux that continue the traditions of romantic literature and painting. The use of chiaroscuro is common throughout his works, through underexposure and adjustment in printing. His photographs' use of bokeh is intended to give them a painterly atmosphere. The work is often presented as diptychs, triptychs and in other groupings, and the exhibitions are specifically curated by Henson to reflect a sense of musicality. Duality is a recurring theme of Henson's work, often in combination with adolescent subjects. He frequently employs a flattened perspective through the use of telephoto lenses. His works are often in the form of staged tableaux in which faces of the subjects are often blurred or partly shadowed and do not directly face the viewer. Why I Paint? How It's Different: Painting vs Photography vs Filmmaking
I started my art career as a filmmaker. Before that I did photography from an early age. I never really saw myself attaching to painting the way that I have, but something just clicked about a year ago. In this video I explain why painting is important to me. The flow state it gives me, and the ability to be alone in a positive way, have really changed my life for the better. Painting has helped me avoid relapse on multiple occasions and painting has pulled me out of deep depressions. Conceptual Photographer DEAN WEST
Australian-born, Brooklyn-based photographer Dean West is best known for his highly staged, saturated photographs that are as cinematic as they are painterly. Drawing inspiration from a Hockney-esque, hyper-stylised Hollywood aesthetic, West meticulously recreates his photographs from memory, a lengthy process which can take up to a year per image. “To recreate the scene of the girl on the balcony (‘St. Pete Beach, 2016’), that was like seven days of driving to find the one space that felt as close to that memory as possible,” said West in a recent interview. Manjunath Kamath: Slide & Video Presentation - Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi
Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi organised an event by the acclaimed artist Manjunath Kamath, with video installations and a power point presentation of his lifetime work on 24th August 2012 at 5.30 pm, at the Government Museum & Art Gallery, Sector 10 C, Chandigarh. Manjunath Kamath was Born in Mangalore, India in 1972. He did his BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore; He was the Artist in Residence, School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, UK. Followed by a Charles Wallace Scholarship, UK. He has exhibited his work extensively, in solo and group shows in India and abroad. Manjunath Kamath compels the viewer to think and participate in his thought-provoking works. His imaginations bring forth different experiments, which he shares with the viewer. His need to draw and hold his viewers' attention is palpable in his varied use of painting, drawing, sculpture, video and found objects. With the help of these disparate genres he creates narratives that are gripping in content, even though they are composed of simple, commonplace elements. Thus Kamath's forte ultimately lies in creating fantasies out of the ordinary. In an age when video art and installations have given a new language to Indian contemporary art, an innovative approach has pervaded the art scene, and artists such as Manjunath Kamath, use art as a vehicle to address identity issues like gender, sexuality and feminism. Through his penchant for fantasy and the absurd he is able to convey his thoughts and ideas in a manner not seen in Indian art before. The narrative is packed with details which provide important clues to the social satire, the wit and the clever ridicule infused in the infinite oddities of human situations. Manjunath Kamath tells stories with his images. His narratives, however, are altered and adjusted constantly, adapting fluidly according to the environment they are narrated in, and resulting in a different meaning each time a story is told. As a visual artist, Kamath feels impelled to regularly reinvent his method of storytelling. By relentlessly working on his articulation and modernizing his techniques, he continuously updates his visual vocabulary. Manjunath himself explains about his thought process and technique - "My works are inspired by the day to day life spend by any individual who is observant of things going around. I am a capturer of the immediate in painterly images. Taking cues from the conversations with friends, relatives, street smart guys, fashion aficionados, art lovers, story tellers, children, myth makers, journalists, art critics and so on, I try to go beyond the face value of the words uttered and the mental images created. I look at the possibilities of the unsaid and chances of the unrevealed in my works. So they are always mysterious and playful..... My world view is quite humorous. I would like to laugh at things and through this laughter I could get into the unrevealed sides of events. This is the same attitude that I take in my video works. I create imaginary situations as in the fables and parables, through claymation models. They create one kind of narrative and leave it open for the viewers interventions. This is the same method that I use in my small scale works and drawings." Uma Prakash writes about his work --" Kamath's unique visual vocabulary reflects his mastery of colour, his techniques and his usage of various mediums. He connects the past with the present in his thought provoking work, showing the deep link between tradition and modernism. With his artistic expertise Kamath addresses issues of identity, race and social structure allowing the viewer to participate in his work." www.lalitkalachandigarh.com
BVRG presents The Art of Dinosaur Designs 14 October - 3 December
The Art of Dinosaur Designs is an exciting new exhibition from artists Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy, featuring a series of large-scale sculptural forms that celebrate the pair’s thirty year creative partnership. Debuting at Bega Valley Regional Gallery, the show is a colourful fusion of art, design and fashion, referencing Olsen and Ormandy’s iconic design label Dinosaur Designs and exploring in a gallery context the artful aesthetic prevalent throughout their work. Gathering highlights of Olsen and Ormandy’s creative career, The Art of Dinosaur Designs features works such Series 8: Movement (2011), a set of eight disks in dazzling colours commissioned to mark the fifth anniversary of Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA). More recent commissions include Loop (2014), a wall-hung sculpture evocative of “the rhythmic lines created when you drop a rock in a lake” as Olsen describes it. Its soft colour transitions are a contrast to Collar Bone (2014) which is characterised by chroma clashes from orange to blue rendered in a painterly application. Totem (2016), the most recent of the works on show, is an iconic set of life-sized totems in the artists’ signature resin developed for London Design Week 2016. While developing new vases, Ormandy saw an opportunity to push the boundaries and create larger sculptural forms from interconnected pieces, and as the pieces grew they embodied the characteristics of totem poles. These larger works explore the relationships of form and colour, with a focus on the variation of line and the interplay of bold solid colours which repel and attract. “We apply the same principles in our art as in our design practice, but with a greater sense of freedom,” says Ormandy. “We tackle each project the way you would tackle a painting or a drawing, really following your eye and allowing those accidents and developments to happen.” The Art of Dinosaur Designs will launch at Bega Valley Regional Gallery on Friday 14 October 2016. Located half way between Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and three hours’ drive from the nation’s capital, Canberra, the BVRG is idyllically situated within the Bega Valley Shire on the land of the original custodians, the people of the Yuin Nation. Set in a landscape of pristine wilderness, rich pastures, unspoilt coastline and boutique villages, the BVRG is the region’s only publicly funded gallery and an outpost for contemporary visual culture. The gallery hosts touring exhibitions of national significance along with its own exclusively curated exhibitions as part of its cultural tourism plan. A growing number of national and state arts institutions partner with the BVRG to deliver valuable and vibrant visual arts programming to the South East; the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Maritime Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art and University of New South Wales Art & Design to name a few. Says Iain Dawson, Director of Bega Valley Regional Gallery: “Exhibitions like The Art of Dinosaur Designs put regional galleries on a level playing field with the metropolitan institutions. Cultural tourism is growing in Australia and the Bega Valley Regional Gallery sees itself as a small, but perfectly formed, player in that space.” Says leading gallerist Karen Woodbury: “Dinosaur Designs has been a huge and enduring influence on the visual landscape of Australia. Their pieces have always crossed the boundaries between art and fashion. Scaling up the ideas of form, usually associated with their more domestic sized pieces, allows these works to resonate on an abstract and conceptual level.” The Art of Dinosaur Designs will show at Bega Valley Regional Gallery, Zingel Place, Bega, from 14 October to 3 December 2016. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday 9.00am till 12.00midday and entry is free.

Fiber Artists Create With An Overlooked Medium
Craft becomes fine art in the hands of three local artists - Nicki Strouss, Esther Hall, and Megan A. Coyan. Each woman, working in her own tradition of paper, embroidery or textile design, creates fiber art that stretches beyond the boundaries of surface design and utility. The constraints of the medium force the artists into spontaneity, often yielding thoughtful yet exciting pieces of art. The artists' show Tendrils: A Delicate Twist will be on display throughout October at the Ohio Art League Gallery at 1552 N. High Street. For more information go to www.oal.org.
