Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology

04:42
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Integrated Product Design - Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft

03:27
The Integrated Product Design (IPD) Master’s programme focuses on teaching how to design user-centered innovative products and product service combinations, based on a balance between the interests of users, business and societal challenges. It covers the entire design process, starting from a design brief and ending with a complete product that is fit for mass or small series production. Thus the emphasis of the IPD master is on teaching conceptualisation and embodiment design, by applying systematic state-of-the-art theories and methodologies, and by integrating user, technology and business aspects. The identity of the IPD Master’s programme is determined by the coherent integration of all these aspects to come to a successful new product proposal; this makes the IPD Master’s programme challenging, exciting and unique. The international product development arena is changing rapidly; products are becoming smarter, better integrated into systems and have to comply with increasingly stringent standards. Product development is moving from an inter-disciplinary to a transdisciplinary occupation, becoming more knowledge intensive and therefore in need of continuous updates of tools and methods. The IPD Master’s programme provides an integrated approach to the disciplines involved: advanced studies in innovative design theory and methods, aesthetics, ergonomics, engineering, and sustainability. The IPD curriculum includes multidisciplinary applied research on innovative product development embedded in its product design projects. http://ipd.msc.tudelft.nl/

A day in the life of a UX Designer in San Francisco (but forreal)

09:35
About a year ago I made a video about the day in the life as a Product/UX Designer and looking back on it… I just don't think it was that useful. So, I decided to remake that video but hopefully with more answers to the question than fluff. I hope you enjoy it! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• LET'S CONNECT Patreon: http://patreon.com/helloimalexa Schedule a 1:1 coaching session with me and more! Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hello_imalexa/ All the things: https://www.alexaleighh.com I design technology in order to maximize human potential. Practice happy, practice often! xo Alexa ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ABOUT VIDEO A typical day in the life of a Product Designer is really different each day so it's hard to put everything that goes on into one video. Regardless, here's a quick list of things that I cover in the video. 1. Flexible Schedules: Sometimes I get into work a bit later because I take morning meetings from home. 2. Mornings: The mornings are often reserved for clearing emails, providing answers to questions from the day before about projects (my company is international so when I'm asleep some of my colleagues are working), as well as working on different types of design documentation. 3. Meetings: The more you grow into a leadership role on your team, the more meetings you may start to have. This is great though, because you want to make sure the design team is represented when important decisions are made. Also, no meeting-type days are common in tech jobs. I love this idea. I get a lot more heads down design work done during these days. My design team sometimes runs design jams on these days too. 4. Collaboration: I work very closely with my Product Management and Engineering teams. We all have important and different perspectives on the projects we work on together. Feedback happens very often, both in scheduled meetings and in casual conversation. 5. Variety: Product Designers are very customer focused, so we are often working with researchers to get our designs in front of customers. Part of my job is facilitating those sessions, creating documentation on what we learned, communicated it, and using the research to inform design decisions. This creates a lot of variety to my days since we are often in different stages of the design process across different projects. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• PARTNERSHIPS I'm so excited to be partnering with Springboard for their Fall UX Career track! Springboard's program is 6 months of online training in UX Design which also includes 1:1 mentoring which includes experts at some of best tech companies in San Francisco. They guarantee you'll get a job within 6 months of graduating or your money back.  $500 off -- Springboard’s UX Design Career Track Use my code at checkout: ALEXA500 Quick link to the course: https://bit.ly/2yEz7sE Let me know if you have any questions!

Product Design Form Development | ONE tip to help YOU

12:20
This video talks about form development in product design / industrial design and offers one tip to help you improve your form development skills. The tip is actually a principle of design based on repetition of design elements. In the video, we look at how this principle is used in 3 different products. For contrast, I've also included an example of a product that does not use the design principle of repetition. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments. Inside the Apple Factory: Software Design in the Age of Steve Jobs

01:36:25
Even though hundreds of millions of people use Apple products every single day, very few people have been able to reveal the secrets and the stories behind designing them. But software engineer Ken Kocienda, who worked there in the final years of the Steve Jobs era -- "the Golden Age of Apple" -- offers an inside look at Apple's creative process in his widely acclaimed book, Creative Selection. He's the "Directly Responsible Individual" (more on that title within!) for designing iPhone multi-touch and much more under the watchful eye of Steve Jobs... who, by the way, would have been 64 years old today. This is an insider’s account of creativity — with lessons for software design and product management for anyone — because it delves into experiments around designing novel user interfaces, as well as the deep questions many companies face around organizing creativity and the creative decision-making process. Especially given a strong leader (and product visionary like Steve Jobs). a16z Deal and Research operating partner Frank Chen — formerly VP of Products and UI Design at HP Software as well as VP of Product Development at a consumer-facing startup before that, and Director of Product Management at Netscape and product manager at Oracle too — interviews Kocienda in this in-depth video interview all about product design. This conversation is the golden ticket into the Golden Age of design, with lessons for any software developer, product manager, organizational leader, or maker. Enter this video… and feel free to explore the different topics labeled throughout: -- How Apple thought about open source in 2001 -- The role of demos in Apple’s software development process -- Career management fork in the road: ship teams or ship products? -- The Apple notion of a “Directly Responsible Individual” -- Apple’s extreme secrecy: feature or bug? -- How the team decided to ship iPhone OS without copy and paste -- The scariest room in SIlicon Valley: demo’ing to Steve Jobs -- Was there too much hero worship at Apple? -- The role of whimsy and playfulness in designing software -- Did waiting for Steve to make decisions slow decision-making?
