QC checklists serve as a guide for your inspector during inspection, providing details related to product requirements, on-site testing, packaging and more. As an importer, if you omit any important details from the checklist, the results could be inaccurate and you may need to re-inspect. Let’s look at the five main ways that inspectors use QC checklists in the field. 1. Pulling a random sample QC checklists often specify how many units inspectors should randomly pull in a sample for inspection. Using the correct sample size ensures the results fairly represent the quality and status of the total shipment. If inspectors pull too many units, this increases the time needed for inspection and will raise your costs if your inspectors bill you based on time. If inspectors pull too few units, this limits the scope of inspection and increases the likelihood that defects and other issues may be overlooked. 2. Checking the product against specifications Inspectors typically use your checklist to verify a number of specific characteristics related to the product. Some examples are product weight & dimensions, material & construction, item color, item marking & labeling and general appearance. Any product requirements you’ve omitted from your checklist likely won’t be checked during inspection. 3. Verifying packaging requirements Inspectors often use the QC checklist as a guide for checking product packaging. Characteristics such as the appropriate type of cardboard, packing & assortment method and packaging labeling are all important checks during most inspections. It may seem excessive to include these details in a checklist. But incorrect packaging can lead to your product being damaged during transit or refused at customs. 4. Classifying and reporting quality defects QC professionals typically classify defects as “critical”, “major” or “minor” in order of severity. For example, you might consider untrimmed threads in a garment to be a minor defect, while a needle left in a garment would be critical. Inspectors often refer to the QC checklist for guidance on how to classify and report any defects found during inspection. Your tolerance for more serious defects will probably be lower than that for less serious defects. So you may receive inaccurate results if your inspectors incorrectly group the defects they find. 5. Performing on-site product tests Many products require on-site testing during inspection to determine whether they meet safety, performance and function requirements. Inspectors follow the QC checklist to determine which tests to conduct, the procedures & equipment needed and your pass or fail tolerances for each test. And inspectors following an incomplete checklist are likely to perform testing incorrectly or misinterpret the result. You will first notice that you can actually hear the workers chewing their way into the upper access area. When I remove the upper bar (access for the actuation key) the workers move right in as you will see. Also, there is a gap at the bottom of the flow frames, so when the access cover is removed some bees come right out to greet me. The workers are licking the flow frame cells, that's a good sign as it's part of a cleaning behavior prior to putting honey in the cells for storage. I expect to see and share with you, the cell filling activities in coming weeks. We have had a colder than normal spring, so there hasn't been a lot of surplus nectar coming in with the field bees. Pollen is arriving in abundance. My bottom two boxes are brood boxes. Bee populations are strong and I expect so see some swarm behavior and new queen cells in coming days/weeks. As many of you have been waiting for an update, this should satisfy your curiosity. Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant. There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks. The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. In fact, the E&P sector should probably be called the EDP sector - because “you can’t find oil if you don’t drill wells.” Exploration Obtaining the Lease Let’s start with exploration which involves the operator obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owner of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas. Then the operator must conduct geological and geophysical surveys to select the first well site to explore for, and hopefully find, economic accumulations of oil or gas. This well is often called a “wildcat well.” Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become a productive oil or gas well. This work is typically done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. On a wellsite, there can be as many as 30-40 different service contractors providing expertise to the operator. Wells can be relatively simple or unbelievably complex. Wells can totally vertical for miles or both deep and horizontal. There are also highly complex “J” and “S” configured wells with numerous branches, or laterals, emanating from the original, or “mother”, hole. These are called “deviated wells.” Production Finally, let’s discuss production, where reserves are “converted to cash” by maximizing the recovery of hydrocarbons from subsurface reservoirs. Essentially, production is efficiently bringing the hydrocarbons to the surface and treating them as needed to make them marketable. So that’s the basics of E&P. We will drill deeper into each of these operations in the complete Oil 101 course at a later date. Now, let’s talk about unconventional resources, clearly the hottest topic in oil and gas over the last decade. Under absorption costing, product costs include all manufacturing costs. Some manufacturing costs, such as direct materials, can be directly traced to particular products. For example, the cost of the airbags installed in a Toyota Camry can be easily traced to that particular auto. But what about manufacturing costs like factory rent? Such costs do not change from month to month, whereas the number and variety of products made in the factory may vary dramatically from one month to the next. Because these costs remain unchanged from month to month regardless of what products are made, they are clearly not caused by—and cannot be directly traced to—any particular product. Therefore, these types of costs are assigned to products and services by averaging across time and across products. The type of production process influences how this averaging is done. Job-order costing is used in situations where many different products, each with individual and unique features, are produced each period. For example, a Levi Strauss clothing factory would typically make many different types of jeans for both men and women during a month. This is a custom product that is being made for the first time, but if this were one of the company’s standard products, it would have an established bill of materials. A bill of materials is a document that lists the type and quantity of each type of direct material needed to complete a unit of product. The materials requisition form is a document that specifies the type and quantity of materials to be drawn from the storeroom and identifies the job that will be charged for the cost of the materials. The form is used to control the flow of materials into production and also for making entries in the accounting records. A job cost sheet records the materials, labor, and manufacturing overhead costs charged to that job. Measuring Direct Labor Cost Direct labor consists of labor charges that can be easily traced to a particular job. Labor charges that cannot be easily traced directly to any job are treated as part of manufacturing overhead. As discussed in a previous chapter, this latter category of labor costs is called indirect labor and includes tasks such as maintenance, supervision, and cleanup. Today many companies rely on computerized systems (rather than paper and pencil) to maintain employee time tickets. A completed time ticket is an hour-by-hour summary of the employee’s activities throughout the day. One computerized approach to creating time tickets uses bar codes to capture data. Computing Predetermined Overhead Rates. There are three reasons for this: Manufacturing overhead is an indirect cost. This means that it is either impossible or difficult to trace these costs to a particular product or job. Manufacturing overhead consists of many different types of cost ranging from the grease used in machines to the annual salary of the production manager. Some of these costs are variable overhead costs because they vary in direct proportion to changes in the level of production (e.g., indirect materials, supplies, and power) and some are fixed overhead costs because they remain constant as the level of production fluctuates (e.g., heat and light, property taxes, and insurance).Page 123 Because of the fixed costs in manufacturing overhead, total manufacturing overhead costs tend to remain relatively constant from one period to the next even though the number of units produced can fluctuate widely. Consequently, the average cost per unit will vary from one period to the next. An allocation base is a measure such as direct labor-hours (DLH) or machine-hours (MH) that is used to assign overhead costs to products and services. The most widely used allocation bases in manufacturing are direct labor-hours, direct labor cost, machine-hours and (where a company has only a single product) units of product.
