GUITAR STYLES: The Blues Rock Difference

This Video: July 11th, 2014 | Search Videos by Title/Date. THIS VIDEOS TAB's + LESSON PLAN: http://www.andrewwasson.com/recent_posts/2014/07_july.php#jul11 Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I'm getting into a lot of the 70's Blues-Rock after learning the traditional Blues style. It seems the Blues-Rock approach adds extra chords & rhythms, making song formats different from the 12-bar Blues. I'm also seeing bands like "Cream" constantly tag on extra chords around the 12-bar Blues structure. Can you break down some of the differences between traditional Blues compared to Blues-Rock? Warren - San Mateo, CA. USA A: Blues Rock was primarily an English invention and guitar players like; Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Jeff Beck worked through the sounds coming out of Chicago, and the American South, to find their own sound that blended Blues with previously existing styles and traditions. Now, we find some of these changes occur in the Rhythms and other changes in the Chord Progressions and the Arrangements. So, in this video I'll be breaking down these areas and reviewing the essential differences between traditional Blues and, "Blues-Rock." Heavily inspired by 70s-style pop acts like the Electric Light Orchestra, this piece about the pitfalls of having the burden of royalty thrust upon Twilight is really super fun and exceptionally produced. THIS LESSON'S HANDOUT: http://www.andrewwasson.com/recent_posts/2011/08_august/aug_2011.php#aug23 Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've been playing guitar for two years and I like the older original rock 'n roll from the 1950's. Can you do a basic video lesson discussing the 1950's rock guitar style. Mainly on what the rhythm guitarist is thinking about to create the rhythm riffs and the scale that seems to be half major and half minor. I know that the basic scale approach is using pentatonic, but I'm confused on the full seven-tone scale that get's used by guy's like; Scotty Moore, James Burton and Chuck Berry. Thanks for reading my question. Paul -- Woodridge, Illinois A: The late 40's & early 1950's was a period where we saw the formation of a style drawn out of a fusion of country & western with swing, as well as, some R&B. It eventually became incredibly well-known as American Rock 'N Roll. In this video lesson we'll keep things pretty straight-forward for guitarists like Paul and some of the other Introductory level guitarists like him. We'll begin by taking a look at the typical rhythm progression that was used on many of the early recordings, as well as, the scale that is most widely used by the guitar players who dominated the early days of establishing this style. Glam rock (also known as glitter rock) is a style of rock and pop music that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s, which was performed by singers and musicians who wore outrageous clothes, makeup and hairstyles, particularly platform-soled boots and glitter. The flamboyant costumes and visual styles of glam performers were often camp or androgynous, and have been connected with new views of gender roles. Glam rock peaked during the mid-1970s with artists including T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music and Gary Glitter in the UK and New York Dolls, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Jobriath in the US. It declined after 1976, but had a major influence on other genres including punk, glam metal, New Romantics and gothic rock and has sporadically revived since the 1990s. Rock Clinging Bonsai Style (Ishizuke)
Very early in Chinese history, mountains were thought to be inhabited by wise men and deities. Therefore, the mountains were worshipped and revered by them. Rocks are seen to represent mountains or parts thereof and have great symbolic meaning. Rocks and mountains are almost always featured in Oriental art, garden design, literature, and religion. Without rocks, any artistic representation is thought to be lacking the potency and magnificence which is associated with mountains. With time, as with most Oriental arts which originated in China, this love of mountains and rocks spread to Japan where it evolved in new and innovative ways. Ishizuke describes a natural scene formed by a combination of a tree and a rock, where the tree is clinging to the rock. The natural occurrence of a seed landing, germinating and growing, albeit with great difficulty, in an inhospitable environment and that is what this style tries to portray. This style also attempts to replicate the feeling and effect of some dramatic rock landscapes found in nature. This may be a mountain, ravine, cliff or a rocky island or shoreline. You may use any species, combination of species or number of trees for the rock clinging style. However, a single tree on a rock is always an enchanting sight. If you decide to do a group or multiple planting, follow the same rules as for a forest, raft sprout or double-trunk style. Bear in mind the logic of a natural scene, especially with regard to the environment and the growing conditions required by each species, when you do a planting with a combination of species. For example, when you use conifers and deciduous trees simultaneously, place the conifers on the upper part of the rock and the deciduous trees on the lower areas. Plant azaleas, ferns and grasses at the base of the rock.

The Top 9 HARMONICA Solos in Rock History
These are some of the harmonica solos from rock history that touched the most people and brought a huge success for the song they were included on. Sure, in blues music you'll find much more impressive solos - technique wise, but blues is not the case in this video. Cheers! Ever wondered what harmonicas can do in the hand of professionals? Check out this list. ---- Harmonicas are such amazing instruments. In such a tiny package it can produce riffs and full solos that range from very upbeat and happy (like the ones in Long Train Runnin’, Hook…) to ones that touch you deeply and give the whole song a sad vibe even if they only last for ten seconds and are made of six notes. (He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother) I sat down and chose the top solos in classic rock history (IMHO of course). Listen to these solos and try to soak in on the use of techniques such as: - Bending - Vibrato - Varying between playing single notes / multiple notes - Speed - How the soloist goes up and down the different octaves and playing low or high. - And overally, the vibes that the harmonica produces in each of the different tunes. Harmonicas are used more widely in blues music (listen to some blues classics on YouTube for more examples of stellar harmonica technique) and there is an abundance of sick harmonica solos in blues music, but today we will focus on rock which is also more familiar, accessible and likable by a wider audience and you will probably know most of the songs I am going to list, which puts the solos fit great in your context of the rest of the song. Enjoy! --------------------- -------- Alon Cooper, (born 1990) is one of the leading multi-instrumentalists and lesson creators on YouTube, with a special passion for creating "musical shortcuts" - which help beginner musicians reach the level they want to get to – in the fastest way around. The 9 Best Beard Styles & How to Rock Them | Eric Bandholz
SHOP Beard, Hair & Body Products Here --- http://bdbd.us/1Z1ZDSl http://www.instagram.com/beardbrand http://www.twitter.com/thebeardbrand Today we're talking the 9 best facial hair styles and which one will best suit your face. The first branch of facial hair is the full beard - the stubble beard is great for those with patchier beards. The corporate beard is reserved more for guys who can grow a fuller beard and is about two weeks to two months worth of length. Then there's the full beard - let it grow and let it flow, friends! The next branch is partial beard - sideburns are quite popular and give you some options (think Wolverine). The goatee is also pretty popular and can be worn long or short. Then there's the whaler aka the Amish, and the lack of mustache has several reasonings and stories behind it. Then of course there's always the simple mustache. The handlebar has a bit more of an English feel to it and can give you a pretty hip look. The cop stache is one most people are quite familiar with and is nicely groomed and tight. Then we have the walrus, and this is the style Eric is rocking - it's big and bold and grows freely. Eric also talks about the idea of hybrid styles - things like the beardstache, which is a shorter beard with a walrus mustache. Totally badass, and a look Eric might be trying in the near future.

A History of Rock 'n' Roll Saxophone
Just a few of the many important saxophonists who helped to develop Rock 'n' Roll music. Danny Lipsitz and The Brass Tacks tackle the fascinating history of the saxophone's influence on rock 'n' roll music. From its beginnings in jazz and swing music, rock 'n' roll heavily featured the saxophone until the electric guitar took over as the premiere rock instrument thanks to artists like Chuck Berry and The Beatles. Through music and stories, The Brass Tacks - with their characteristic high energy and in-your-face performance style - will cover the most influential rock saxophone solos of this era including music by Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Louis Jordan, Ray Charles, and Fats Domino. Danny Lipsitz is a bandleader, saxophone/woodwinds player, and composer. Performing in a variety of genres, Lipsitz has appeared around the world with artists like Ronnie Spector, Mark Hudson (Aerosmith, Ringo Starr, Ozzy Osbourne), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge), Ginkgoa, The Avalon Jazz Band, The Hot Sardines, Lucky Chops Brass Band, The Losers Lounge, Chris Norton, and the Gordon Webster Swing Band. www.facebook.com/dannylipsitzmusic www.dannylipsitzmusic.com (Top 10 Saxophone Solos in Pop and Rock) (Epic sax guy 10 hours)

History of Rock 3 - In the style of "Motherless children"
A blues standard first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927, it's one of the 500 songs that helped shape rock n'roll. It was covered by various artists, including Eric Clapton in his 1974's album 461 Ocean Boulevard. It's a country blues played with slide guitar. In this music style, played originally with acoustic steel guitar, the strings are tuned open D, so every stroke on open strings can produce a D accord. How To Write a Guitar Riff in a Blues Rock Style
How To Write A Guitar Riff In A Blues Rock Style Here is a lesson that I have made to help beginner guitarist to learn some ideas that they can use to write their own original guitar riffs. The idea of the lesson is to learn the different skills and techniques taught in order to combine them to be able to improvise and to create and original guitar riff. This lesson shows how to write a guitar riff based around the "A" Blues scale. To write a riff in a different key simply play the Blues scaled taught in another key by moving the route note of the blues scale to the required note on the low E string and apply on the same techniques as taught in this lesson. This Video: January 3rd, 2014 | Search Videos by Title/Date. THIS VIDEOS LESSON PLAN - DOWNLOAD LINK: http://www.andrewwasson.com/recent_posts/2014/01_january.php#jan03 Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I've watched your videos on; Smooth Jazz, and Guitar-Based Pop Music and I was wondering if you might make a video covering the style of British Rock bands like; Dire Straits, Supertramp, and Jethro Tull? This style of clean Rock Guitar (with a hint of Blues) is amazing to me! A lesson focused on how this style uses basic guitar theory for creating licks & riffs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Charlie -- Hicksville, NY. USA A: British rock bands like; Supertramp, Dire Straits, Jethro Tull and many others, all have a striped-down, no frills melodic approach that will either apply; a very clean, or just lightly overdriven guitar tone. And, their musical ideas apply a good deal of; arpeggios, pentatonic and scale modes with; heavy sustain, legato and vibrato technique. It all comes together to communicate extremely melodic ideas in their songs. In fact, the melodic and harmonic contrast of this style, can make for songs that are both complex while yet maintaining a certain simplicity at the same time! Now since songs by these artists can run the gamut including everything from; Scottish roots, to Reggae, to Blues and of course Rock... there's no limits and plenty of room to explore when composing music in this style. In the lesson, I cover the basics regarding harmony and melody of the British Rock Guitar Style. AMS Lecture Series: Christoper Doll -- "The Unlikely History of 1960s Rock and Roll"
Christopher Doll of Rutgers University Lecture Title: "Nuclear Holocaust, the Kennedy Assassination, and 'Louie Louie': The Unlikely History of 1960s Rock and Roll" Christopher Doll describes his talk: "In narratives of American popular-music history, the song 'Louie Louie' is usually depicted (to the extent it surfaces at all) as a minor, and ultimately ephemeral, controversy: a song that initially raised eyebrows and lowered standards but that was quickly forgotten in the wake of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and other more substantive, 'classic' sixties artists. My talk will reposition 'Louie Louie' as a major turning point in the history of Anglo-American popular-music style—a unique combination of past and contemporary practices, one that anticipated some significant formal aspects of the music that would follow. An abundance of musical examples will illustrate this talk's exploration of the relationship between sixties socio-political events and youth music, the impact of Latin music in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, the history of melodic-accompanimental textures since the advent of jazz, and the eventual global ubiquity of songs built around short loops of music."
