Troy woman loses more than $700,000 in online dating site scam

02:39
TROY, Mich. - A Troy woman was scammed out of more than $700,000 when she believed the lies of someone posting a fake profile on a dating website. The woman learned there can be a fine line between falling in love and falling for a scam. It's a heartbreaking reminder that it's impossible to truly know who you might be communicating with online. The woman sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to someone who doesn't even exist, sending shockwaves through the Troy community. "Wow, that's scary," Carol Corbin said. "I mean, I would think twice before I gave somebody that much money." Troy police have never had a scam in which so much money was stolen, and it's the talk of the town. "I'm not that trusting," Corbin said. But police said the 58-year-old grandmother was that trusting, and perhaps lonely. She was looking for companionship on the singles dating site Match.com. A man who called himself Donny Koch met her on the site and said he was from London. He said he worked on an oil rig and needed money, so she started sending thousands of dollars. The man then told her he was caught with all the cash she sent him and was jailed. He said he needed money for bail, so she sent more and more money. "She has given him approximately $703,000," said Troy police Captain Robert Redmond. When she called police in Europe to ask about Donny Koch, she was told there is no such person. Bank of America finally called her to say her withdraw patterns indicated she was being scammed.

Online Dating Scam: man uses Internet to meet victims to burglarize, stalk them home - TomoNews

01:08
HSINCHU, TAIWAN — Ladies, when meeting a potential love interest from the Internet it’s best to play it safe and don’t let him know where you live. Police busted this man, age 41 and identified by his last name, You, for burglarizing at least three apartments. Mr. You, who’s already married, would pose as a single man on the Internet who was looking for his Mrs. Right. After striking up a few friendships and possible love interests he’d arrange to meet up. Mr. You would then either find an opportunity to steal and copy the woman’s keys, then follow her home, or just steal her credit card. Then he’d take the unlucky victim for all he could get. Mr. You’s online profile brags that he could get a woman to scream after just 5 minutes, yeah, scream with horror and shock. So far, three of his former online girlfriends have pressed charges and with CCTV footage from the apartment buildings it looks like the charges are going to stick. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Video chat Scam in Online Dating Websites

02:13
Subscribe for information How to Find Ukrainian Girl without Marriage Agency - http://eepurl.com/gmkXdn Scam from girl in video chat Sure my followers are already educated about a lot of ways of scam from online dating website. They can use not real pictures of girl, girls can be paid by agency, they are getting % of every letter etc... All this you already know... But for sure, if you are talking with girl over video chat... which kind of scam it can be? This question usually make sense when you are looking to super nice model, which in reality claim that she is very poor, and order iPhone form her boss to take a picture and put in Instagram. And her instagram page is managed by model agency, not even by her... And here you are coming to talk with her in video chat, and you see this is she really! What is the trick I recently discovered... If she is not talking with you by voice, this video most likely be pre recorded where she is smiling , typing something in computer and not talking to you in reality. If you feel you can be in such situation, tell her to wave to you, stand or anything else, which actually can proof you she is really typing form the other side of the screen. I hope this life hack was useful for you.
Soldier frustated after his photo was used in online dating scam

02:21
DALLAS -- Emily Thompson was enamored with the soldier she met on the dating site, Match.com in March. "I definitely was falling in love," she said. But it all fell apart when the Dallas businesswoman learned their love was a scam that cost her more than $130,000. His name, on the profile, was Robert Parker. Tuesday, we heard from two more North Texas women who also texted with him. "I was shocked," said one woman, after she saw our first story on the scam Monday night. "I’d been sent the same pictures that she had been sent." But Parker is not real, as they discovered when he started asking for money. But the man in the photos is, and he's a victim too. "I’m trying my best to live a nice average normal suburban life," he told us via Skype from his home Tuesday. He’s an Army Reservist living in Illinois, whose name we’re not sharing since his family has sacrificed enough of its privacy over the last few years. "The pictures came from Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012," he said. "Our battalion created a Facebook page to let our family and friends up to date with what we’re doing, where we’re at." He says someone saved them and keeps using them on several dating sites. He hears from scorned fake lover every two to three months. It should be a surprise that it put stress on his family. "When, you know, a wife gets text messages or Facebook messages from a random woman saying 'I saw this on Match.Com...those are definitely the most rough," he said. He says he’s contacted police and the dating sites, but for every profile taken down, there’s another that pops up. So he’s asking daters to ignore him, if you see him. "You need to know that if you get contacted, and it seems fishy, it probably is," he said. It’ll make for one less heart he’ll have broken, without even knowing. We reached out to Match.com for a statement regarding these stories and fighting fraud and they sent WFAA this statement: We are deeply saddened to hear about these crimes, and our thoughts go out to the victims. At Match, the safety and well-being of our community is a top priority, and we take the issue of fraud very seriously. We understand that sophisticated criminals prey on individuals in every corner of the web, and we diligently address it on the site and app, tracking, monitoring and working to prevent fraud every step of the way using technology that identifies possible fraudulent behavior such as unusual communication patterns and suspicious photos and profiles. Unfortunately, in cases such as these, criminals encourage users to communicate off of Match’s platform as quickly as possible, giving us limited visibility into their behavior. However, while reprehensible, financial fraud can still be prevented. We work to constantly educate our members throughout their Match experience, with safety tips, when members are communicating with each other, and with a mandatory pledge to never give out any financial information to anyone over the internet. As long as our members follow our safety tips, these kinds of things cannot happen.

nigerian dating scam

07:17
They're perfect. In fact, they're someone you could see yourself spending the rest of your life with. A decent person with a good job or business in search of a good, honest partner to settle down with. You or someone you know may be dating this person online right now. However, be warned. Things aren't what they appear to be. In reality you're talking to a criminal sitting in a cybercafe with a well rehearsed script he's used many times before. He's hunting through chat rooms, dating sites and social networking sites searching for victims, looking to cash in on romance. If you are over 40, recently divorced, a widow, elderly or disabled then all the better in his eyes. Scammers are adept at psychological profiling, and use any weakness they find to their advantage. It's the newest evolution of the Nigerian advance fee (419) scam. Instead of sending spam letters that promise millions for your assistance, these scammers are targeting single men and women who are searching for love online. They use psychological tricks to lure their victims in, use poetry and even gifts to get them under their spell, then once you are there, will try to reach for your wallet, all the time declaring their "undying love" for you. The scam may take the form of asking you to cash a cheque for them through your bank account because they are "out of the country" and unable to cash it themselves, or they may come right out and ask you to send money to help them out of a fabricated "financial difficulty" they claim to be experiencing. These are all lies used to try to make them easy money from an unsuspecting victim. The sad truth is, for every real profile you see on the internet, there are numerous false ones pretending to be your perfect mate and using photographs stolen from modelling or social networking sites. The people in the photographs are as much victims as the people who get scammed for hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars.Internet romance scams and other related crimes are very real, and they are affecting -- even ruining -- lives throughout the world. The best weapon against this crime is education. The more people that are educated in the ways the scams work, the harder it is for the scammers to make money and the more scammers that can be put out of business. http://www.romancescam.com/forum/portal.php

DATING SCAM Targeting middle aged women | Match.com cant stop them! Paramount Investigative Services

05:49
Hey, everybody. I’m private investigator Ken Childs, and the reason for this public service announcement video, if you will, is because I get this call approximately once a month now. And I’m starting to call it the next Nigerian dating scam. And so, the target is, you’ve got middle-aged women and/or women that are like recently retired, and they’re now newly online dating and they’re trying to find a loved one. Now, where the scam comes in is you have these Nigerians; hell, half of them are probably nineteen-year old punk kids, and what they do is they set up hundreds and hundreds of profiles, you know, a day literally. And so, what they do is they set up these profiles and they set them up in a way it’s gonna be middle-aged man, he is a high-income earner, something like to draw you in, you know. And then, they’ve got the profile, it’s charming, it’s cool, collect [Unclear/00:01:03]. And so, they start [Unclear/00:01:05] you with these profiles and eventually you’ll be drawn to one. So, from there, you know, they [Unclear/00:01:13] their way into you, and at that point, you know, you start setting up like a date, like, “Okay, let’s go for a little coffee. Let’s go for a little dinner. Let’s have a little personal connection”. And so, they do. But the problem is an emergency comes up and they can’t be with you, and that’s they’re entire goal the whole time, it’s just not never be with you. And so, what happens is they’re terribly sorry and they want to make it up to you, so they go ahead and send you out to dinner, they’ll send you a gift card, they’ll take you and a friend to dinner and, you know, pick up the tabs somehow. And so, what they’ve done is they made a little bond with you, and that told you right there that this person isn’t into you for the money, like they made that connection with you emotionally and then they took care of dinner. The next thing that they’re gonna do for you is they’re gonna send you flowers, you know, it’s gonna be your birthday, it’s gonna be holiday, maybe a tragedy, maybe you got a new job. Something they gonna do is send you flowers. And so, what that does is that just compounds the fact that this person like doesn’t need your money, you know, in fact, they’re giving you gifts, they’re giving you their [Unclear/00:02:18] gifts on you. So, that kind of like changes roles a little bit for you, that’s why this is the perfect scam. So, then, after some time goes by, maybe like five months or so, you know, you’re really thinking you’re into this person and they’ve been charming, and they’ve been great, and they’ve sent you some gifts. Now, an emergency comes up. You know, one emergency this guy was a [Unclear/00:02:37] dealer and he moved stones all over the world. So, what happens is like with one of my clients, he got held up at the airport and he ended up just needing, you know, an extra five thousand dollars. And so, you know, the problem is he had to pay the taxes in order to get his [Unclear/00:02:54] and he’ll sell his [Unclear/Same As Previous], he’ll pay you back, it’s not big deal. You know, so, of course, like naturally you’ve made this connection with this person, like, shoot, you’re gonna help him out. So, you know, the client went ahead, and they paid like, you know, three to five thousand dollars, and they took that loss. Another client was, it was a minor car accident, you know, like in the streets of London, you know, they hit another car, they just needed like twenty hundred pounds, you know, and this person would go away, you know, like no big deal. And so, you know, of course, that client went ahead like, gosh, it’s not big deal to them. You know, shoot, they sent them like twenty hundred pounds which is like probably about three thousand bucks. And so, this is like the very first part of the scam, [Unclear/00:03:34] like drawing the big money out of you. You know, and then, the next part of the scam is they’re gonna hit you, and it’s gonna be quick, it’s gonna be like right within the same day [Unclear/00:03:42], or the following week or now it’s like a much larger like debacle, I don’t know what’s gonna be. But now they’re gonna hit you for like another test of like seven thousand, ten thousand, because at this point, they’re all in; they’ve made their money back off of you. You know, like they just sent flowers and dinner, which ran them like seventy-five to about twenty-five, and here it is they got like two thousand, three thousand, four thousand dollars off of you. So, now they’re gonna take you for the big head. They’re gonna hit you for another seven thousand, nine thousand, and sadly you’re never gonna hear from them again. So, this is the new like dating scan, and you are the new target. So, one of the things that I recommend you to do to like combat this is to actually meet the person. You know, don’t accept no for answer, like go for that cup of coffee. If you find that picture to be too good to be true, you know, it’s just like

Yet the fact is only 5-7% of Ukraine and Russian ladies ever find a foreign husband. TRANSLATION... There are more beautiful, single Ukrainian ladies than you can imagine genuinely searching for a good husband. Yet the real trick is knowing how to AVOID the litany of SCAMS! So just be FOREWARNED you are in shark infested waters! If you want to avoid the costly, painful mistakes most foreigners make on your search for an amazing, beautiful wife in Ukraine, shoot me an email and I'll share my "good agency" contacts with you. How Ukrainian Dating Agencies Scam Foreigners... Most Ukrainian dating agencies specifically target middle-aged men and have elaborate schemes in place that allow them to make millions of dollars on their unsuspecting clients. They are almost always based on a fraudulent letter writing mechanism, where the client thinks he is corresponding with a beautiful woman, but instead he writes to a translator who is using a model's photos and dating profile. Both of them are paid employees of the agency. Since the client pays for every email he sends through the agency and every minute of online chat with the brides, their goal is to keep the messages coming in, rather than actually doing legitimate matching for love and marriage, as they claim. To be frank, to marriage agencies, marriage is just an unwanted by-product of this industry, and fortunately for them it is rare. The only thing it is good for is publicity: the agency will milk every marriage that happens through them for all its worth. Agencies also offer the women's private email addresses for sale, but more often than not after the transaction has taken place it will still be the translator who writes to the client, as they have no interest in letting the client off the hook. Another way to scam the foreign men is to get them to send gifts and flowers to the women at up to 500% markups, which are then often taken back to the vendor and returned for cash. If the foreign client insists on meeting his potential bride in person, the agency will work hard to keep the ruse alive and keep the scam meter running. They make money on every single thing the foreigners do during their stay from coordinating apartment rental, taxi/limo, translation, marriage coaching, all services are often marked up by 500%. After finally meeting their "bride", who is suddenly cold and distant, they realize that they have been scammed. Unfortunately, by that time it is too late to do anything about it. How To Spot a SCAM... There are several red flags that can help you recognize a scam. Watch out for the following warning signs: • During your online conversations the woman tells you she doesn't have a cell phone, wifi signal or a computer to keep writing you letters. Everyone in the Ukraine does, especially women looking for a foreign husband online. • The woman tells you her computer is broken and asks for money to buy a new one. It might be an expensive yet affordable gift to a Westerner, but in Ukraine it is a month's salary. • She asks you for money tugging at your heart strings: sob stories about sick family members and car accidents are more common than you would think. • She tells you she needs money for a visa to come and see you.

How To Avoid Online Dating Scams And Romance Fraud. ID Theft Tips For Daters and Webmasters

07:19
How To Avoid Online Dating Scams And Romance Fraud - http://www.redspan.com This video one of a series about creating and running online dating sites so be sure to subscribe or check my channel for the others. It is an unfortunate fact that with tens of millions of people using online dating sites each year there are a few peple who fall prey to the fraudsters and scammers. Many victims are reluctant to report the financial loss to the authorities because they feel ashamed of being taken in and fleeced. So can you, as a dating site member or a site owner, be more aware of the signs? We are all familiar with the common sense precautions of day to day life. We lock our homes and vehicles, we zip up bags in crowded streets, and we have learned to be wary of suspicious emails and phone calls. However, when people enter the world of online dating they sometimes forget their common sense and let their guard down. This is because affairs of the heart and the emotions require that we open up a bit to strangers. You can proceed to do so and enjoy great success with online dating. Millions of people have met their partners (temporary or permanent) through dating sites but just as we take precautions when out shopping or opening emails so we must be sensible and wary of what we do online. The key thing to remember is that most people instinctively want to TRUST and HELP others. Good, decent folk are always willing to give a stranger the benefit of the doubt. It's what makes the vast majority of people on our planet kind people who are willing to help when someone asks. But it is also the reason con artists succeed in defrauding us. They know how to exploit these instincts and feelings. Know The Signs First, the fraudster simply communicates with you for weeks or perhaps even months in order to earn your TRUST. They behave just as you would expect. They are kind and attentive. They respond to your messages and tell you all about themselves. They open up and encourage you to do likewise. Unbeknwon to you, they may be sat at home or even in an office with a long list of people they are in touch with around the world. This is the grooming stage. They regard you as a target that needs to be nurtured before they move into the second stage. The second stage is when they have gained your trust. Then they will ask for your HELP. It may be small sums at first. Perhaps it's a few dollars for some school books for the children. Who can resist the urge to help a sick child? They might ask for a few hundred dollars for medical bills. And so it continues. Take Precautions The Golden Rule of online dating is simple. Never send anyone any money, no matter how convincing the story. Never put your full name, exact date of birth, or any external contact details on your dating site profile where others can see it. Always communicate with others through the dating site and defer exchanging email addresses and contact phone numbers until later. Never reveal any of your financial details. The fraudster may try to convince you that they have a sum of money they want to send abroad for safe keeping and trust you to look after it. Once they have your personal and financial details you are at a high risk of identity theft and losses from your account. They may also ask you to receive items they send from abroad for collection by a friend or relative later. Never agree to this either as you could become the recipient of drugs or other contraband. What is ROMANCE SCAM? What does ROMANCE SCAM mean? ROMANCE SCAM meaning, definition & explanation

What is ROMANCE SCAM? What does ROMANCE SCAM mean? ROMANCE SCAM meaning - ROMANCE SCAM definition - ROMANCE SCAM explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A romance scam is a confidence trick involving feigned romantic intentions towards a victim, gaining their affection, and then using that goodwill to commit fraud. Fraudulent acts may involve access to the victims' money, bank accounts, credit cards, passports, e-mail accounts, or national identification numbers or by getting the victims to commit financial fraud on their behalf. Scammers post profiles, using stolen photographs of attractive people, asking for others to contact them. This is often known as catfishing. Letters are exchanged between the scammer and victim until the scammer feels they have groomed the victim enough to ask for money. This might be for requests for gas money or bus and airplane tickets to travel to visit the victim, medical expenses, education expenses etc. There is usually the promise that the fictitious character will one day join the victim in the victim's country. The scam usually ends when the victim realizes they are being scammed or stops sending money. Victims can be highly traumatized by this and are often very embarrassed and ashamed when they learn they have become a victim of a scam and that the romance was a farce. In some cases, online dating services are themselves engaged in misrepresentation, displaying profiles which have been fabricated, which use personal information from users who have not agreed to be depicted on the site or by presenting outdated or out-of-region profiles as current and local. Scammers post profiles on dating websites, social accounts, classified sites and even forums to groom new victims. Upon finding victims, scammers lure them to more private means of communication, (such as providing an e-mail address) to allow for fraud to occur. The fraud typically involves the scammer acting as if they've quickly fallen for the victim so that when they have the opportunity to ask for money, the victim at that time has become too emotionally involved, and will have deep feelings of guilt if they decline the request for money from the scammer. Narratives used to extract money from the victims of romantic scams include the following: The scammer says their boss paid them in postal money orders. The scammer wants the victim to cash the money orders, and then wire money to the scammer. The forged money orders leave the banks to incur debts against the victims. The scammer says they need the victim to send money to pay for a passport. The scammer says they require money for flights to the victim's country because of being left there by a step-parent, or husband/wife, or because they are just tired of living in their country and somehow never comes, or says that they are being held against their will by immigration authorities, who demand bribes. The scammer says they have had gold bars or other valuables seized by customs and need to pay taxes to before they can recover them before joining the victim in his/her country The scammer meets the victim on an online dating site, lives in a foreign country, falls in love, but needs money to join the victim in his/her country The scammer says they are being held against their will for failure to pay a bill or requires money for hospital bills. The scammer says they need the money to pay for the phone bills in order to continue communicating with the victim. The scammer says they need the money for their or their parents' urgent medical treatment. ....

We're Going to the Law(POF Scam Story) | Cam Finnie

So this happened back in February about Seven months. I did make a video about it way sooner but ended up not making it past post production. I fell victim to what is know in some forums on the internet as a very common scam among the dating sites, where you talk to someone who claims they're Eighteen and you find out a day or so later that they aren't I obviously didn't go along with the scam the entire time so I don't know how it would have finished. But according to most forums I saw. Eventually I would've gotten messages that said stuff like: if you pay us X amount of money for pain and suffering or to make up for a broken electronic(s), we won't press charges or even calls or messages saying that the girl committed suicide and I need to give up some money to them for various reasons. You can do all sorts of research on the internet on this scam. Looking for Love: The romance scam

02:12
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Not everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers are creating fake profiles to steal money. A man who thought he found his future wife only to learn he was at the heart of a scam that cost him thousands of dollars. Phillip Lowery said, “We texted each other for probably about three months, learning about each other and she was looking to come to America and I was looking for someone to come to America." Lowery met a woman on an online dating site when they began texting. She lived in Ghana and after several months they decided they would get married. He began sending money for Visas, passports, and clearance fees when she said she became sick. "She has a problem with malaria and she's having kidney problems, so I had to pay for a transplant," he said. After he sent the money US Postal Inspector Augustus Magee said, “He then tried reaching out to her and she stopped returning his emails, stopped returning his phone calls." Postal inspectors called it a romance scam where conmen pose on dating sites to lure in victims. In all, Lowery sent more than $250,000. But the scam didn't end there. "He had received several phone calls claiming that he had won the lottery,” said Magee. Inspectors said that was common. Conmen often share victims’ information. Lowery was told he won 4 million dollars, all he needed to do was pay the fees. He lost even more money until postal inspectors were tipped off by the amount of priority envelopes he was sending out. Postal inspectors said Lowery learned a valuable lesson. "Be very cautious about these dating sites for one. And don't give out any of your personal information and you want to meet that person in person,” said Magee. Dating scams are common. Postal inspectors said people should remember they're talking to a stranger unless they verify their identity. Many dating sites recommend communicating only through their sites so no personal information is exchanged during the online courtship.

Online Romance - The Scam

02:11
To learn more visit bbb.org/northwest. The Scam: Romance Scams are most often to start online using a dating site, app or Facebook. After establishing a relationship, the scammer starts asking for money, favors or help with moving money somehow. Before you know it, the victim is moving large quantities of money for their online love without thinking twice about it. It is likely that the fraudster will stop reaching out when the victim catches on or starts asking questions. What is a Money Mule? In order to be harder to detect, fraudsters use “money mules” to illegally move stolen money. Money mules are often unsuspecting romance fraud victims who may end up in serious legal trouble for their involvement in money movement. How to Money Mule's help fraudsters? • Moving Drugs- many romance scam victims have been imprisoned due to their involvement in moving drugs. • Business Email Compromise Fraud- Romance scam victims are likely to help move money from fraudsters involved in business fraud emails such as the CEO fraud scam currently happening. • Fake Checks- These scams involve money mules being sent fraudulent or stolen checks, cashing them, then wiring them to their “love” overseas. Money mules are often given an elaborate story to why there are so many steps to sending them money. • Credit Card Reshippers- Stolen credit cards are easy to get on the dark web. Because online sellers are cautious about sending product overseas, money mules are used to receive goods charged to stolen cards and forward them along to the fraudster. Stats: • In the past 36 months, BBB received 636 Scam Tracker reports related to romance fraud and 7,500 complaints against online dating sites. • In 2018, 20-30% of romance victims were used as a money mule. Protecting yourself: • Don’t rush into an online relationship. Talk to family and friends about your dating choices. They can be the voice of reason when emotions are involved. • Analyze dating profiles. Look for repeated phrases and misspellings or misuse of words. Do an internet search of their name and profile picture to make sure they’re legit. • Recognize. If someone asks you to open a bank account, gives you access to an existing bank account, asks you to pick up or transfer funds or wants to keep your relationship a secret, you should assess the situation to make sure you are not being used as a mule. • Reach out for help. If you are concerned that you or someone you know might be a money mule, you should reach out to the FBI or U.S Postal Inspectors to provide them with information about your situation.

Click below now and watch for the complete documentary series FREE ($37.97 retail value): http://mailorderbridescams.com/ Did you know… 1. Statistics show women outnumber men by 10.5 million in Ukraine and Russia. 2. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reports that “…marriages arranged through [mail order bride] services have a divorce rate of only 20% (based on USCIS data going back 17 years).” 3. The USCIS also reports that “… mail-order bride and the online dating industries result in 4,000 to 6,000 marriages between U.S. men and foreign brides each year.” 4. Yet the fact is only 5-7% of Ukraine and Russian ladies ever find a foreign husband. TRANSLATION... There are more beautiful, single Ukrainian ladies than you can imagine genuinely searching for a good husband. And millions of slavic ladies will remain lonely without a husband and family for their entire life. So opportunity is knocking for YOU! Yet the real trick is knowing how to AVOID the litany of SCAMS! So just be FOREWARNED you are in shark infested waters! If you want to avoid the costly, painful mistakes most foreigners make on your search for an amazing, beautiful wife in Ukraine, send me an email and I'll share my "good agency" contacts with you.
