My secret English vowel pronunciation trick!
How do you know if a word in English is pronounced with the long vowel sound or the short vowel sound? For example, “cut” and “cute” are pronounced differently, but which one has the long u sound? It may seem obvious with a short, familiar word, but what if you encounter a new word that you have never seen before? There is a quick an easy trick I have found that will give you the right answer most of the time. Watch this lesson to learn one pronunciation trick that will change your life! Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/long-short-vowels-pronunciation-trick/ . WATCH NEXT: 1. TURN NOUNS & VERBS INTO ADJECTIVES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSXHFAAM_xU&t=0s&list=PLpLRk365gbPb1TnZNvDIuXP3tDeIcu8kB&index=51 2. HOW TO PRONOUNCE J & Y IN ENGLISH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdk1UBDsgNQ&t=0s&list=PLpLRk365gbPb1TnZNvDIuXP3tDeIcu8kB&index=60 TRANSCRIPT Buh-clue. Hi. I'm Ronnie. I have something that... Oh my god, this is amazing. Honestly, this lesson will change your life. It changed my life when my good friend, Leaf, told me about this. Leaf, thank you; grammar god, you are pronunciation god - Leaf. Awesome. So, I've been trying to figure this out for ages, years, maybe 100 years because I'm a vampire, and I got it. Thank you. Are you confused about the pronunciation of vowels in English? So, for example, we have a long vowel sound, and a long vowel sound means that the vowel sounds like its alphabet name. So, for example: "a". But in English, we also have: "aw" and "a". Different ways to pronounce the vowels. One of them is a long vowel sound, so "a" is pronounced like "a". Then we also have a short vowel sound where "a" is going to be pronounced like: "ah". And how do you know when you read a new word to say it like "a" or "ah"? I have the answer. Oh, it's amazing. I... Okay, I get really excited about things a little bit too much; but this, I'm just super excited about it. And I want to teach you this - and, geez, it's going to change the way that you read things, the way that you learn English. So, give me some money or something. Just, enjoy. Listen. It's amazing. So, we have some guidelines. Now, I want to make perfectly clear that people like to say "grammar rules", and Ronnie hates rules. I'm Ronnie. I do not like rules because they're made to be broken; and in English, there's always exceptions to rules. So, you study a rule and you learn it, and then you go: "Oh", but no - sorry; that's an exception. And then you say: "Why?" Maybe you ask someone, maybe you ask your teacher: "Teacher, why?" and the teacher goes: "I don't know." So, please think of these as only guidelines; life-changing guidelines, though. Okay? I'm telling you. So, we have words that have two vowels. Okay? So: "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y" are vowels. But this is our guideline: If in the word you have two vowels, the first... Oh, I'm sorry. The first vowel sound... The first vowel in the word is going to sound like its alphabet name or it's going to sound like a long vowel sound. The second vowel, it's silent; we don't even say the second vowel. Crazy. So, in English, if there's an "e" at the end of the word - we don't say it. In all of the other languages of the world, we say all the vowels; but English, oh no. The "e" is silent; we don't say that. So, if you have two vowels in the word, for example: "a" and "e", we're going to say the first vowel like it sounds like in the alphabet, so "a". We're going to say: "ba", and we do not say: "bak-e"; we say "bake". So, the first vowel is going to sound like the alphabet: "bake". What about this one? We don't say: "fah-me", like "ah"; we say: "fame". And, again, we don't say the last vowel in the word. So, this works with two-vowel words. The "a" we pronounce like an "a", and the "e" or the second vowel is silent. One more time the rule; it's life-changing. The first vowel sounds like its alphabet name, the second vowel is silent; we don't say it. Let's try this again. So, this is "a". The next letter. What's this vowel sound or what's this sound in the English alphabet? "A", "e". So, we say: "these". We don't say: "the-se", "the-se". "Look at the-se. Look at these." So, again, we're going to say the "e" like an "e", and the second "e" is silent. This is amazing. Woo-hoo. This word. So, you look: "dre-am". "I had an amazing dre-am last night; I was flying." But it's actually just a dream. So, one vowel we're going to say "e", the second vowel is silent. So, we don't say: "dre-am"; we say: "dream". "I had a dream." Did you have a dream last night or now? Are you imagining this? No. No, no, no. This is real. Get back into this. It's amazing. Let's see with this letter. What letter is this? Now, this is hard for you guys because in your languages maybe this is "uh" and this is "e", but in English, this is "i". So, watch this trick. Put an eye-woo-hoo-on your "i". […]

The Secret to English Vocabulary – How to remember more
The secret to a rich vocabulary is to remember words and not just recognize them. I'll teach you a practical, easy way to increase your active vocabulary. Understand the difference between your productive and receptive skills. Find out why multiple-choice questions are easier than fill-in-the blank questions. Use these tips to boost your vocabulary for everyday life and get higher grades on the IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and other exams. http://www.engvid.com/the-secret-to-remembering-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. This is Rebecca. Let me start this lesson by asking you a question. Which of these two exercises is easier for you? Let me go through them with you. "Chaos means __________." Something. Fill in the blank. Okay? In other words, they're asking you here: the word "chaos" means what? Or second question: "Chaos means a) sadness b) disorder c) illness". Okay? Think about that for a second. So, which of these two questions was easier for you? Okay? If you're like most students, you will probably say that this question was easier for you, because you had a choice of something. And here, you actually had to think of the answer. All right? So, let me explain why that is the case. Here, in the fill in the blank question, you were asked to remember the answer. When you're trying to remember a word, you're using your active vocabulary. In English, like any other language, you have two kinds of skills. We have productive skills and receptive skills. Productive skills are what we use when we are speaking and writing, because when we speak and write, we have to remember words in order to do that. Right? And receptive skills are what you use when you're reading or listening, because when you do either of these activities, you just have to recognize the word, so you have to recall what they mean, but you don't have to think of them by yourself. You just have to recognize them. So the vocabulary that's involved here on this side is your passive vocabulary of being able to recognize things. The vocabulary that's demanded here for speaking and writing is your active vocabulary, which you need when you're doing these activities and which you needed here in the fill in the blank answer. Okay? So, this is true not only in English. It's true in every language. You have a productive... You have productive skills and receptive skills. You have an active vocabulary and a passive vocabulary. And, in all languages, people's passive vocabulary is always much, much larger than their active vocabulary. That's why you can read hundreds of books and understand thousands and thousands of words, but you may not actually use those words yourself, even in your own language and certainly in English. So, next, I'll explain to you how to develop this active vocabulary. So there are many ways to improve your active vocabulary. Today I'm going to show you one way. All right? So, what I've done is written a lot of vocabulary on the board, and what I'd like you to do is to take a theme, a vocabulary theme. What do I mean by a vocabulary theme? I mean an area, such as here, I've taken education, here I've taken religion, and here I've taken business or work. All right? And then you divide it. Let's say you have a piece of paper or you could do it, you know, on... You could do it written or you could do it in your mind, and you divide it into categories, such as: in the field of education, you want to think of people, you want to think of places, and you want to think of actions which are the verbs. Right? So you could start by just doing it in a simple way and see if you can come up with at least three examples. All right? Three examples of people in education: "teacher", "student", "principal"; places: "school", "college", "university"; actions: "study", "teach", "learn". Okay? In the area of religion, if we're talking about different kinds of people, people of different religions: "Muslims", "Christians", "Hindus"; places in the area of religion: "mosque", "church", "temple"; actions could be: "pray", "bless", "believe". Obviously, these are not the only examples; I'm just showing you how to do it. In the field of business, for people you might put: "manager", "employee", "supervisor"; for places: "office", "factory", "department"; and for actions, things like: "work", or "recruit", or "promote". Okay?

The King's Secret: Learn English (US) with subtitles - Story for Children "BookBox.com"
► Buy the book in English on Amazon(US): Kindle: https://amzn.to/2BUZtIw ___________________________________________________________________________________ The King has a secret nobody should know. What can it be? The King's Secret A Santali folktale There once lived a king who had a son with the ears of an ox. The king was ashamed of him, and kept the prince hidden away in a secluded room in the palace. Soon the time came for the prince's head-shaving ceremony. The king called the royal barber from another kingdom and the ceremony was held in secret. When it was finished, the king summoned the barber to his personal chamber and warned him. "Never tell anyone about the prince's ears. If you do, I will throw you into the dungeon!" The barber promised not to say a word about it to anyone. But alas, he was very bad at keeping secrets. Days passed and his stomach began to swell. "I must tell someone or else my stomach will explode!" thought the barber. Just then a splendid idea crossed his mind. He walked up to an old tree and quickly whispered the secret to it. His stomach immediately shrank back to its normal size, and he felt much better. "The tree will definitely keep the king's secret safe," said the barber to himself. A few days later a drummer came in search of some good wood to make a new drum. He stopped in front of the same tree the barber had whispered his secret to. "This is exactly what I’m looking for!" he thought to himself, looking at the tree. He soon made himself a new drum and went to the palace to sing in front of the king. The guard at the gate was happy to see him. "Sing something to please the king. He's in a bad mood today," said the guard. Suddenly the drum began to sing on its own. “I have a secret no one should hear. The king's son has ox's ears!” The guard quickly grabbed the drum and shouted at the drummer, "Nobody can reveal the king's secret! Run away before someone catches you!" But it was too late. The king had heard the song and ordered the drummer to be brought in. The poor drummer was dragged into court. "Throw him in the dungeon!" thundered the king. "But he didn’t do it,” said the guard. “It was his drum, Your Majesty." "Then throw the drum in the dungeon too. And punish all those who heard my secret!" roared the king. He was so angry that his mustache quivered. The guard boldly stepped forward. "Then you'd better throw your whole kingdom into the dungeon, Your Majesty, because we all know your secret." The king was stunned. He looked at his most trusted minister. "Is this true?" he asked. "Yes, Your Majesty. We never said anything because we didn't want to upset you" replied the minister. The king felt ashamed. He realised what a cruel father he had been to keep his son hidden away for so many years. The next day, the king declared a holiday. He held a special parade and proudly took his son around the kingdom. Everyone cheered and waved at the young prince in spite of his ox’s ears. The guard led the procession, followed by the drummer, who played his new drum. Join our free English learning email group at http://gonaturalenglish.com It’s no secret that English is a very complicated language to learn and speak. There are rules, written and unwritten, that determine how words are spelled or pronounced. In this video, Gabby talks about ‘Schwa’ which refers to the pronunciation of the unstressed syllable in a word. When a word has two or more syllables it will have a strong and weak syllable. The strong syllable is going to change the sound of the weak syllable. Take a look at the words below and see if you can determine which vowel sound is changed. AgAIn The underlined letter is the weak syllable in the word and the capitalized letters are the strong syllable. Because ‘A’ is the weak syllable, it is pronounced as ‘uh’. Almost as if it’s being punched in the stomach. The same goes for ‘Celebrate’. CELebrate These kind of changes can be confusing but practice will always make your comprehension so much better. They ruled over their country in a fair way but beneath their kindness was a sadness that they could never get over. King - I know it’s been 15 years, but it still breaks my heart that our daughter was kidnapped as a baby. Queen - I know. She was our little angel. I would do anything to find her. King - One day my dearest, I still have hope. In a small village not far from the castle was a young girl named Jane. She was forced to work hard every day by her adoptive parents. Unlike most adoptive parents they didn’t love Janel, they treated her like a slave and never allowed her to have any fun. As she sat scrubbing the walls to their house she spoke to herself. Jane - I know I was adopted when I was young, but surely they adopted me to be more than just a slave. Her adoptive parents were named Sandy and Chris. They arrived home just as she was about to put away her bucket and brush. Sandy - Why isn’t this wall clean yet? You’ve been scrubbing it for over five hours. It really is true what I say, you’re just a useless scrubber. I want to see my face in that wall when I come back or you’re not being fed. With the angry threat still hanging in the air, Sandy left the room and went upstairs to her bedroom. Jane - Why is nothing I ever do good enough? Chris - It’s all your own fault. Sandy is the most lovely person in the world, you must have done something to upset her otherwise she wouldn’t be acting like that. Remember that next time you start complaining, she’s perfect and you’re not, so if she’s complaining you must have done something wrong. With that small speech, Chris left to join Sandy in the bedroom. Jane was left to scrub the walls, alone like she was most of the time. With a flash a witch appeared right next to Jane. At first Jane was scared, but she didn’t need to worry. Not all witches are evil, and this witch most definitely was one of the good ones. TGW - Oh young Jane, don’t you know you shouldn’t wish on an empty stomach? There are so many more wishes you could have made than that one. Better wishes perhaps, but still, I can make that wish come true if you like. Jane - What? Who are you? Wishes? I was just talking to myself, that’s all. I didn’t really make a wish, not a proper one anyway. TGW - Well it sounded like a wish to me, and I’m here to grant it. I’m a good witch. There are a few of us around you know. All I need is some of your adoptive mother’s hair and I can find you somewhere else you could live. Jane - I wish my parents were alive, I would have wished to go and live with them. TGW - Oh sweetheart, your parents are alive. You should have learned that these two are nothing but dirty liars. If you can get me the hair, I can get you out of these dirty clothes and into some nice new ones with your parents. Jane - My parents are alive? Who are they? TGW - Get me the hair, and you’ll find out everything. Almost as quickly as she had arrived, the good witch vanished into thin air. Jane, sat down and started to think about what she had been told. Jane - Well, Sandy never washes her hair and she definitely never brushes it. So I need to find a way to get some hair off her head. Oh I hope my parents are happy to see me, I wish I knew what happened that lead to me ending up here. Just as there are good witches, there are also evil witches. Sandy and Chris waited until Jane was busy scrubbing the walls and they sneaked out of the house. They made their way up a twisted path, surrounding by dead trees to the hut of an evil old witch. TEW - Tonight you will have what you desire. As long as you can keep her away from her real parents then the spell will work. They will die and you will be able to take the throne as her legal parents. Sandy - That is easy. If there’s one thing I’m good at it’s splitting up families. ✿ Credits: Music: http://www.epidemicsound.com/

Judy leads language classes for both native and non-native speakers to foster understanding and effective communication in our diverse community. A long time resident of Caledon, Ontario, Judy has four children and lives with her husband Richard on a beautiful ten-acre hobby farm. She is an environmental activist who enjoys hiking and skiing. Speak English Naturally: My pronunciation secret for difficult words
Learn the important pronunciation technique called BACKCHAINING, used by actors, singers, and public speakers to sound more natural and authentic in any language. Backchaining will retrain your ears to hear and your mouth to pronounce English words more easily and successfully. It is especially useful for those long, difficult English words, but it is also helpful with any word you are struggling with. Most English teachers do not have time to teach you this simple strategy, but you can apply it immediately after watching this lesson. Famous language courses are based on this powerful pronunciation technique; watch, listen, and solve your pronunciation problems today! https://www.engvid.com/speak-english-naturally-backchaining/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. In this lesson you're going to learn a pronunciation secret that will help you to say English words more easily and correctly, especially long, difficult ones. Okay? Now, this is actually a professional technique that's used by actors, and singers, and linguists, and lots of people who have learned many different languages and want to or need to pronounce words correctly and authentically. Okay? Now, the reason why pronunciation is difficult for everyone when you're learning a new language is because when we grow up speaking our native language, we get used to... Our ears get used to hearing certain sounds, and our mouths get used to making certain sounds. And when we learn a new language, like English, then you have to train both your ear and your mouth to work a little bit differently. Okay? Now, the other part is because English is not phonetic, it's not completely phonetic. A large part of it is. Some people say about 80 to 85% is phonetic, but a lot of it is not phonetic. What does that mean? That means when we see a word, the way we say it is not the way it looks. Right? So, there's also that factor to take into account. But this technique can help you with both of these difficulties. Okay? So, first let's look at what we normally do when you're learning how to pronounce a word. Okay? So normally what we do is we do something called frontchaining, and I'm going to explain to you exactly what that is, but what I'm going to teach you in this lesson, the secret is something called backchaining, and that's what we will practice. Now, let's take our first example and do what people normally do, even teachers, even ESL teachers. All right? When they're teaching classrooms, they don't normally spend that much time on pronunciation because they don't have time. There's so much to teach and the class is so big, there's so many students it's difficult to spend time on pronunciation. So naturally, people have a harder time learning that and mastering that. And if you think about it, when a child is born and when a child is growing up, it doesn't learn to read first, it just learns by listening. So this is an opportunity to listen afresh, like new in a different way to words so that you can reproduce the correct sound, the correct pronunciation. Okay? So let's take our first example, and our first example is the word "pronunciation". Okay? Because by the way, a lot of people do not say this word correctly. Now, let's do it in the standard way, frontchaining, and see what happens. So in frontchaining, we start pronouncing or saying the word from the front and going forward. So if I did that, if I was teaching you how to say this word by using frontchaining, I would say to you: "You need to say it like this: pro-nun-ci-a-tion." Okay? I've divided up here just to make it a little bit easier for you to see and hear the syllables. Okay? This long word happens to have five parts, five syllables. Right? So it's quite long. Pronunciation. So when a student hears that, they're like: "Oh my god, I have to learn so many different sounds", and it's a little bit scary because there are five sounds, you know, that have to follow. So, what happens when you feel scared or nervous about something? Your brain shuts down. You don't learn as effectively. You don't learn as well as when you're happy and relaxed. So the advantage of learning in... Through the other system, the other technique called backchaining is that you feel much more relaxed because when we did it from the front we had to learn one, two, three, four, five different sounds. But look what happens when we use backchaining. So, backchaining is a technique that teaches you how to pronounce words starting from the end. So let's do that now and see what happens. So let's just take this last syllable, and we can say: "tion". So all you have to learn right now is the word "tion". Not word, part of the word. Next: "ation". You can repeat it after me. "ation, ciation, ciation, nunciation, nunciation". And last: "pronunciation, pronunciation".
