It may seem obvious with a short, familiar word, but what if you encounter a new word that you have never seen before? There is a quick an easy trick I have found that will give you the right answer most of the time. Watch this lesson to learn one pronunciation trick that will change your life! Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/long-short-vowels-pronunciation-trick/ . WATCH NEXT: 1. HOW TO PRONOUNCE J & Y IN ENGLISH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdk1UBDsgNQ&t=0s&list=PLpLRk365gbPb1TnZNvDIuXP3tDeIcu8kB&index=60 TRANSCRIPT Buh-clue. Hi. I'm Ronnie. I have something that... Oh my god, this is amazing. Honestly, this lesson will change your life. It changed my life when my good friend, Leaf, told me about this. Leaf, thank you; grammar god, you are pronunciation god - Leaf. Awesome. So, I've been trying to figure this out for ages, years, maybe 100 years because I'm a vampire, and I got it. Thank you. Are you confused about the pronunciation of vowels in English? So, for example, we have a long vowel sound, and a long vowel sound means that the vowel sounds like its alphabet name. So, for example: "a". But in English, we also have: "aw" and "a". Different ways to pronounce the vowels. One of them is a long vowel sound, so "a" is pronounced like "a". Then we also have a short vowel sound where "a" is going to be pronounced like: "ah". And how do you know when you read a new word to say it like "a" or "ah"? I have the answer. Oh, it's amazing. I... Okay, I get really excited about things a little bit too much; but this, I'm just super excited about it. And I want to teach you this - and, geez, it's going to change the way that you read things, the way that you learn English. So, give me some money or something. Just, enjoy. Listen. It's amazing. So, we have some guidelines. Now, I want to make perfectly clear that people like to say "grammar rules", and Ronnie hates rules. I'm Ronnie. I do not like rules because they're made to be broken; and in English, there's always exceptions to rules. So, you study a rule and you learn it, and then you go: "Oh", but no - sorry; that's an exception. And then you say: "Why?" Maybe you ask someone, maybe you ask your teacher: "Teacher, why?" and the teacher goes: "I don't know." So, please think of these as only guidelines; life-changing guidelines, though. Okay? I'm telling you. So, we have words that have two vowels. Okay? So: "a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and sometimes "y" are vowels. But this is our guideline: If in the word you have two vowels, the first... Oh, I'm sorry. The first vowel sound... The first vowel in the word is going to sound like its alphabet name or it's going to sound like a long vowel sound. The second vowel, it's silent; we don't even say the second vowel. Crazy. So, in English, if there's an "e" at the end of the word - we don't say it. In all of the other languages of the world, we say all the vowels; but English, oh no. The "e" is silent; we don't say that. So, if you have two vowels in the word, for example: "a" and "e", we're going to say the first vowel like it sounds like in the alphabet, so "a". We're going to say: "ba", and we do not say: "bak-e"; we say "bake". So, the first vowel is going to sound like the alphabet: "bake". What about this one? We don't say: "fah-me", like "ah"; we say: "fame". And, again, we don't say the last vowel in the word. So, this works with two-vowel words. The "a" we pronounce like an "a", and the "e" or the second vowel is silent. One more time the rule; it's life-changing. The first vowel sounds like its alphabet name, the second vowel is silent; we don't say it. Let's try this again. So, this is "a". The next letter. What's this vowel sound or what's this sound in the English alphabet? "A", "e". So, we say: "these". We don't say: "the-se", "the-se". "Look at the-se. Look at these." So, again, we're going to say the "e" like an "e", and the second "e" is silent. This is amazing. Woo-hoo. This word. So, you look: "dre-am". "I had an amazing dre-am last night; I was flying." But it's actually just a dream. So, one vowel we're going to say "e", the second vowel is silent. So, we don't say: "dre-am"; we say: "dream". "I had a dream." Did you have a dream last night or now? Are you imagining this? No. No, no, no. This is real. Get back into this. It's amazing. Let's see with this letter. What letter is this? Now, this is hard for you guys because in your languages maybe this is "uh" and this is "e", but in English, this is "i". So, watch this trick. Put an eye-woo-hoo-on your "i". […]

The Secret to English Vocabulary – How to remember more

08:43
The secret to a rich vocabulary is to remember words and not just recognize them. I'll teach you a practical, easy way to increase your active vocabulary. Understand the difference between your productive and receptive skills. Find out why multiple-choice questions are easier than fill-in-the blank questions. Use these tips to boost your vocabulary for everyday life and get higher grades on the IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and other exams. http://www.engvid.com/the-secret-to-remembering-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. This is Rebecca. Let me start this lesson by asking you a question. Which of these two exercises is easier for you? Let me go through them with you. "Chaos means __________." Something. Fill in the blank. Okay? In other words, they're asking you here: the word "chaos" means what? Or second question: "Chaos means a) sadness b) disorder c) illness". Okay? Think about that for a second. So, which of these two questions was easier for you? Okay? If you're like most students, you will probably say that this question was easier for you, because you had a choice of something. And here, you actually had to think of the answer. All right? So, let me explain why that is the case. Here, in the fill in the blank question, you were asked to remember the answer. When you're trying to remember a word, you're using your active vocabulary. In English, like any other language, you have two kinds of skills. We have productive skills and receptive skills. Productive skills are what we use when we are speaking and writing, because when we speak and write, we have to remember words in order to do that. Right? And receptive skills are what you use when you're reading or listening, because when you do either of these activities, you just have to recognize the word, so you have to recall what they mean, but you don't have to think of them by yourself. You just have to recognize them. So the vocabulary that's involved here on this side is your passive vocabulary of being able to recognize things. The vocabulary that's demanded here for speaking and writing is your active vocabulary, which you need when you're doing these activities and which you needed here in the fill in the blank answer. Okay? So, this is true not only in English. It's true in every language. You have a productive... You have productive skills and receptive skills. You have an active vocabulary and a passive vocabulary. And, in all languages, people's passive vocabulary is always much, much larger than their active vocabulary. That's why you can read hundreds of books and understand thousands and thousands of words, but you may not actually use those words yourself, even in your own language and certainly in English. So, next, I'll explain to you how to develop this active vocabulary. So there are many ways to improve your active vocabulary. Today I'm going to show you one way. All right? So, what I've done is written a lot of vocabulary on the board, and what I'd like you to do is to take a theme, a vocabulary theme. What do I mean by a vocabulary theme? I mean an area, such as here, I've taken education, here I've taken religion, and here I've taken business or work. All right? And then you divide it. Let's say you have a piece of paper or you could do it, you know, on... You could do it written or you could do it in your mind, and you divide it into categories, such as: in the field of education, you want to think of people, you want to think of places, and you want to think of actions which are the verbs. Right? So you could start by just doing it in a simple way and see if you can come up with at least three examples. All right? Three examples of people in education: "teacher", "student", "principal"; places: "school", "college", "university"; actions: "study", "teach", "learn". Okay? In the area of religion, if we're talking about different kinds of people, people of different religions: "Muslims", "Christians", "Hindus"; places in the area of religion: "mosque", "church", "temple"; actions could be: "pray", "bless", "believe". Obviously, these are not the only examples; I'm just showing you how to do it. In the field of business, for people you might put: "manager", "employee", "supervisor"; for places: "office", "factory", "department"; and for actions, things like: "work", or "recruit", or "promote". Okay?

The Secret to Improve American English Pronunciation - Schwa

05:34
A Secret Way To Improve Your English Pronunciation. Join our free English learning email group at http://gonaturalenglish.com It’s no secret that English is a very complicated language to learn and speak. There are rules, written and unwritten, that determine how words are spelled or pronounced. In this video, Gabby talks about ‘Schwa’ which refers to the pronunciation of the unstressed syllable in a word. When a word has two or more syllables it will have a strong and weak syllable. The strong syllable is going to change the sound of the weak syllable. Take a look at the words below and see if you can determine which vowel sound is changed. AgAIn The underlined letter is the weak syllable in the word and the capitalized letters are the strong syllable. Because ‘A’ is the weak syllable, it is pronounced as ‘uh’. Almost as if it’s being punched in the stomach. The same goes for ‘Celebrate’. CELebrate These kind of changes can be confusing but practice will always make your comprehension so much better. Listen to native speakers and review your vocabulary. That way you can get used to how words are pronounced and the flow of spoken English. Hopefully this video has been helpful to your English skills! Want to learn more? Take advantage of the online English video classes from Gabby available at www.GoNaturalEnglish.com. Hollywoods Secret Spoken Language, -Hidden in all your TV shows! Not ENGLISH! -1

10:40
Hollywood has a secret language. They speak it in all your TV shows. They hide their words in amongst English words, spoken so fast its hard for any human to speak that fast but they do. They use words that are similar phonetically that can pass off as that word, but in fact it is entirely a different word. Words are whispered to the camera, spoken quickly, hidden in between two English words, you name it, any way they try to hide it they will do it. Their secret spoken language is broadcast on TV all day every day in many of their shows. This proves they are all in a secret society, they all understand it and speak it. Why are they doing this? They don't want YOU to know who they are fighting against. It is YOU, and the God that made you. If you choose to believe it or not. They do. “That which we must say to the crowd is, we worship a god, but it is the god one adores without superstition. To you sovereign grand inspector general, we say this and you may repeat it to the brethren of the 32nd, 31st and 30th degrees - the Masonic religion should be by all of us initiates of the high degrees, maintained in the purity of the LUCIFERIAN doctrine. If lucifer were not god, would Adonay (the God of the Christians) whose deeds prove cruelty, perfidy and hatred of man, barbarism and repulsion for science, would Adonay and His priests, calumniate Him? Yes, lucifer is god, and unfortunately Adonay is also God, for the eternal law is that there is no light without shade, no beauty without ugliness, no white without black, for the absolute can only exist as two gods. darkness being necessary for light to serve as its foil, as the pedestal is necessary to the statue, and the brake to the locomotive. General Albert Pike, Grand Commander, sovereign pontiff of universal freemasonry, giving instructions to the 23 supreme councils of the world.

TEDxOakville - Judy Thompson - Three Secrets You Need to Know About Spoken English

15:04
Judy Thompson, B.A., TESL Certification, professor, author and speaker is an expert in spoken English. A student herself of French and German, Judy knows firsthand the frustrations of learning to speak a new language. Judy lived and taught in South Korea and it was there that she had the first of many revelations about spoken English and how it should be taught. Newcomers are embarrassed about their accents and grammar mistakes and native speakers are unaware that the way they speak makes it extremely difficult for non-native speakers to understand them. Judy leads language classes for both native and non-native speakers to foster understanding and effective communication in our diverse community. A long time resident of Caledon, Ontario, Judy has four children and lives with her husband Richard on a beautiful ten-acre hobby farm. She is an environmental activist who enjoys hiking and skiing. In her spare time, she raises champion hunter show ponies.

Секрет естественной английской речи / The secret to speaking English naturally

28:20

Transcript: Hi and welcome back. In this video, I’m going to teach you one simple trick that you can use to become a fluent English speaker by spending just 10 minutes a day. The best part about this is that you don’t need a partner – you can do this by yourself. This is a technique that has worked for many of my students and if you do what I tell you in this video, I guarantee that you will become more fluent in English. So what is this trick? Well, it’s a technique known as JAM. Uh, no, not that kind of jam. This is actually a little fluency game based on a show that airs on BBC radio. The reason it’s called JAM is because it’s short for Just A Minute. This game has three stages. So here’s how you play it: You’re going to talk about a topic for one minute. That is, you’re going to give a speech without any preparation. So you just pick a topic - you can either take general topics like sports, hobbies, friends, books etc. or you can choose a question. For example, what is your favorite mode of transport? And once you have a topic, you speak. Now when you do, there are some rules: The first rule is that you cannot stop speaking. You must talk for the full minute. If you have to pause to catch your breath, it’s OK, but you cannot pause for more than three seconds. Even if you say nonsense or you say something unrelated to the topic it doesn’t matter. You’re just going to keep talking. So that’s rule number one. Rule number two is you cannot repeat the same ideas. That means you can’t just say the same things over and over and over again – this isn’t pronunciation practice – it’s fluency development, so no repetition of the same ideas. And rule number three is no writing – you cannot make any notes while you are speaking, you must only concentrate on speaking. These are just the three rules. So to begin, you need a timer, this can be on your smartphone for example. You start stage one by starting the timer and you speak until the one minute is reached. I’m going to give you an example of how to do this. I’m going to take this question: “What is your favorite mode of transport?” and I’m going to speak for a minute on this topic. Now I haven’t done any preparation, so let’s see how I do. OK, so what’s my favorite mode of transport? I would have to say that it’s the train. That’s because um, actually, you get to see a lot of nice scenery, beautiful landscapes and things like that. And you know, train journeys generally tend to be longer than other types of, or rather, other modes of transport. You can see I’m really struggling for ideas but I can’t stop, I have to keep going so I’m saying whatever comes to mind, that’s no problem. But back to the topic at hand, yeah, train journeys because they’re longer, they’re more relaxing. And one last thing I want to mention is that I’ve had the opportunity to meet interesting people and make friends on many train journeys. As a kid I used to ride the train a lot with my family. We used to go to lots of places by train and it’s actually something that I really enjoyed. Phew! That was hard. But that’s OK. That’s the whole point of this exercise. That was stage one. Now we’re going to move on to stage two. Here’s where we’re really going to start building our fluency. The first part of stage two is making notes – so you can use a paper and pen now. And you’re going to think back to the speech that you just gave, and collect ideas you came up with. In my speech, I remember that I had three ideas: The first was that on train journeys, you get to see a lot of beautiful scenery. The second idea was that train journeys are longer, so they’re more relaxing. The third idea was that you get to meet interesting people and make friends. So once you have these ideas down, you’re going to repeat the exercise. That means, you’re going to set your timer for one minute and you’re going to speak again on the same topic, but now, you can use your notes to guide you. You will notice that this time, you are actually able to speak more fluently because you have some good ideas on paper, and you will be able to expand on your ideas and give more information. Once the timer hits one minute, you stop. And we move on to stage three. Just like in stage two, you’re going to go to paper and pen, but this time, you’re going to add more ideas to your notes based on your second speech. I added some ideas like this. So now – for one final time, you’re going to speak again. This is your final speech. So you set your timer for one minute, you use your notes and speak. I’m going to give you my final speech based on my notes so you can see the difference.

Their headquarters, termed Ghost Command, is located in a haunted mansion nestled between a number of tall skyscrapers (which resemble the World Trade Center's Twin Towers in New York City) They are supported by a number of secondary characters including Ansa-Bone, a talking skull phone; Skelevision, a talking skeleton television; Belfrey, a pink talking bat; and Ghost Buggy, their talking ghost car. They occasionally enlist the aid of Futura, a time travelling Ghostbuster from the future, and Jessica Wray, a local TV news reporter. Together, they have dedicated themselves to ridding the world of the evil ghost wizard Prime Evil and his cast of henchmen. Prime Evil's headquarters, termed Hauntquarters (which resembles the British Houses of Parliament complete with a Big Ben-esque clock tower), is located in The Fifth Dimension. In a typical episode, Prime Evil uses his magical powers to open up a wormhole to enable one or more of his henchmen to complete a particular scheme that serves to help him take over the world. Famous guest-star ghosts and monsters that appeared on the show include Count Dracula (who is actually a vampire) and the Headless Horseman (who also appeared in an episode of The Real Ghostbusters written by Jean-Marc Lofficier's wife, Randy Lofficier). Like almost all 1980s Filmation cartoons, each episode closes with Skelevision (sometimes accompanied by Belfrey) explaining a particular lesson that can be learned from the events that went on during the episode. From time to time, Jake, Eddie Jr or another good character would talk with Skelevison about the lesson. Also some versions would not have Skelevision. 👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻
