It was erected on 22 December 2014 by Pope Francis with territory taken from the Diocese of Kottar. He appointed Fr. Jerome Dhas Varuvel as the first bishop of the diocese.
Bifurcation of the diocese of Kottar had been a long-standing demand of the people of the region. 100 Parishes from Thiruthuvapuram and Mulagumoodu vicariates of Kottar diocese were put under the administrative control of Kuzhithurai diocese. Prior to this bifurcation, Kottar diocese had been one of the largest in India with over 500000 Catholics. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kuzhithurai is a diocese located in Tamil Nadu. Wikipedia Bishop Jerome Dhas Varuvel was born on 21 October 1951 at Kallutharai, in Kanyakumari district in the diocese of Kottar.
He completed his school studies in Nagercoil in 1965 and did his Pre-University Course at the Scott Christian College in Nagercoil, before joining the St. Aloysius Minor Seminary (1968-1970) at Nagercoil, as a candidate for the diocese of Kottar.
After philosophical studies at the Sacred Heart Seminary, Poonamallee, Chennai (1970-73) he did bachelor’s degree in Economics from Arulanadar College, Karumathur (1973-76) before joining the Salesians in 1977. He made his first profession on 24 May 1978.
His theological studies were done at the Salesian Pontifical University (1981-85). St. John Paul II ordained him a priest on 2 June 1985 at the Vatican.
After his priestly ordination, the bishop elect completed his Masters degree in Pedagogy from the Salesina Pontifical University before returning to India.
In the Chennai Province of Salesians he worked as vice rector and rector at various Salesian seminaries from 1986 to 2001.
He became Provincial Councillor for two years in 2001 and was Director of the Educational Ministry of the Province of Chennai from 2003-2010.
In 2010 he became the director of Don Bosco Mission at Thalavadi (and Master of Novices (2010) Kuzhithurai is a city and a municipality in Kanniyakumari District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrativeheadquarters of the Vilavancode Taluk. It has a historical seaport (thurai) where ancient merchants came from across the Arabian sea in ancient times. It is mentioned in ancient Indian maps. As of 2011, the town had a population of 21,307.
According to 2011 census, Kuzhithurai had a population of 21,307 with a sex-ratio of 1,022 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929. A total of 1,829 were under the age of six, constituting 922 males and 907 females.Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 1.45% and .02% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 85.99%, compared to the national average of 72.99%. The town had a total of : 5519 households. There were a total of 7,861 workers, comprising 171 cultivators, 615 main agricultural labourers, 238 in house hold industries, 5,573 other workers, 1,264 marginal workers, 27 marginal cultivators, 99 marginal agricultural labourers, 136 marginal workers in household industries and 1,002 other marginal workers.
People of this town generally know both Tamil and Malayalam languages, because of its proximity to the border state of Kerala. Tamil and Malayalam are widely spoken by the people.
The diocesan area is well connected by roads and railways. Kuzhithurai Railway Station is next stop from Eraniel towards Trivandrum.
Trivandrum International Airport is the nearest airport and is 34 km from the heart of the city.
Kuzhithurai municipality spreads over an area of 5 km². The Thamiraparani river flows through Kuzhithurai.
People of this town generally know both Tamil and Malayalam languages, because of its proximity to the border state of Kerala. Tamil and Malayalam are widely spoken by the people. The culture is a mixture of Tamil and Malayalam culture and traditions. Hinduism and Christianity are the major religions in the town. On Monday, December 22, 2014,Pope Francis erected the new Roman Catholic Diocese of Kuzhithurai, with 264,222 Catholics and a total population of 855,485, out of territory taken from the neighboring Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar, and named the Rev. Fr. Jerome Dhas Varuvel, S.D.B., 63, until then a novice master for the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Vellore diocese, as its first Bishop. Its headquarters will be at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Thirithuvapuram, and it will be a suffragan see of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madurai.
