Who could possibly dislike this. They must not have a heart.

They did well. You'll never do it better than Blaze, but they did well.

Is that actually Scott Avett? It must be an imposter, Scott Avett plays the banjo, I don't know who this guy is but he sings alright.

Blazin! Thanks for doing such a great version :-)

Blaze must've been such a soul to be around. He lived like he wanted to, died doing what he thought was right. He's missed.

This is a band covering a song...going thru the motions...quite well... And, Blaze Foley's renditions of this song, his original, is done far truer.

Blaze foley was a great man. WE lost him way to early. Look him up and you will understand. He died doing the right thing.
A G (1 month ago)
what did he do?
Bobby Fells (3 years ago)
Decent enough cover of a fantastic song. I'm happy that bands are covering Blaze so maybe more people will think to look him up when they see this wasn't written by the band they're listening to. Blaze was such a wonderful talent it's a shame he left us too soon. Long live Blaze Foley!
Bobby Fells (2 years ago)
Here we go with the comment police lol... I'm pleased just fine, thank you. We're all huge Blaze fans here my man....

"decent enought" lol lower you're damn standards or you'll never be pleased. I'm a huge Blaze fan, and have been for years. This is a fantastic cover

Drunken Angil,  Your on the otherside..............
Chris Barbaree (3 years ago)
I love the simple picking of this even though some of transitioning isn't that simple. Still haven't figured it out yet. I'm better at banjo anyway. Blaze is a legend. I'd like for the FBI to return that one studio album they confiscated. It almost sounds like someone is playing a twelve-string along with them but it's the harmonizing is perfect. Amazing cover. Much respect for using finger picks too. I can only use them when playing slide.
Lincoln MacEachern (1 year ago)
There's something special about family harmony.
TheBayAreaAssasin1011 (2 years ago)
Chris Barbaree they harmonize like no other really... I listen to alot of different things so there are times they slip from memeory and its always a treat to be reminded...
SasaNW (3 years ago)
I actually had no idea who the Avett Brothers were when I first heard this! My brother got me into Blaze Foley and I fell in love with this song. Which lead me to this. Now I can't get enough Avett Gold! Thanks Bro!

Nolan Hasecuster (3 years ago)
Scott just closes his eyes and feels it.. The way music is meant to be played.
Marten Dekker (12 days ago)
Nolan : The Original artist, Blaze Foley.... ...sings this with far more feeling. This, compared to that, is just phoning it in.
da nuggman (9 months ago)
Seth does now as well he’s just more.. intense when he plays.. saw Dave Rawlings Machine front row- all 5 eyes closed in harmony only strings.. Jesus it was freakin unreal even got a “China Doll” outta Dave🙂

Fast Heart Mart (4 years ago)
Great song! I just recently found out Blaze Foley wrote it after listening to John Prine's version for months now. Imagine John Prine covering your song! Wild. And now I find out the Avette Brothers cover it too. Wow! Good times! I love the Avette Brothers.
da nuggman (9 months ago)
I was there 1st show they played this I was like 😱 and a year before Waits “old ‘55” their covers are freakin impressive tho this song fits Prine’s voice Foley’s version really hits hard

How was it?
Rico Adventura (4 years ago)
Its really hard to write a song like this so its a smart move to sing it because most people wont notice that its a cover or even care.
thethorax1 (3 years ago)
+James Guthrie - We are one the same page I think. Blaze never expected success. He was looking to exercise the demons in his own path. Songs are not great due to those who choose to cover them or even pen them, they just are.
James Guthrie (3 years ago)
+Rico Adventura ...it says it in the title. Right beside the name of the song. Beyond that, the Avetts are millions of times more successful than Foley on the strength of their own songs--many of which are legitimately great. They're beyond needing to take shortcuts or use others' work. Clearly covering Blaze here as a tribute to him, an acknowledgement to an influence and inspiration of theirs.

If you like this, then go back to all of the great writers from Austin TX. Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt- then pay a visit to John Prine and lastly Dan Reeder.  Oh and please feed the pigeons some clay while you're at it!
alex henry (5 years ago)
Is there a recording of this one can purchase?  I didn't see anything in the "about" section saying so, and googling it just led to various sites pointing back to this video.
